I use an old GE VR II cartridge, top of the line early-mid 1950s, made expressly for mono 78s. Very forgiving and totally ignores any up and down movement, not like stereo cartridges which interpret up and down movement as a whole other channel of hiss and pops. This cartridge also almost completely ignores cracks in the records, again, the up and down movement. They are still around but it's tough to find someone willing to part with theirs.
