When intern coach Roger Neilson, fed up with what he felt was the poor performance of the officials in the game, placed a white towel on the end of a hockey stick and held it up in a gesture mocking surrender (waving the white flag). The players on the Canucks' bench followed suit. At the next game, the team's fans cheered their team on by waving white towels above their heads. And yes Terrible Towel did predate this.

You guys are quiet compared to us. Just watch one of your games. The only time you make "some noise" is when you score a goal. Leaving Rexall Place after a game was like leaving an AC/DC concert after standing in the front row. Your ears were ringing until the next game! That's a fact.
