  • this scene makes me feel so good, every time I watch it. I feel like I'm the man telling a girl that line.... Classic!

  • or guy ")

  • Two Thumbs Up if that woman is as timely as my baby - San Diego lady. I am what I say I am baby...I hope you still have enough belief in fairy tales to give me the chance to prove it.

    I WILL Love you someday,

    Keith

  • two losers want to talk in metaphors and have to shampoo my dogs crotch....

  • "You make me a better man" is a totally bullshit line, completely out of character. Reminds me of a similar line by Dustin Hoffman in "Tootsie." Some wussy director's directors influence.

  • @Glinkaism1 The fact that's it's completely out of character is precisley WHY it's a great line, don't you see? Here is a man who hates EVERYBODY in the world, he finds fault with every living soul on the face of the planet, not got a good word to say about any of them, then he meets this woman who he sees no fault with at all. Usually Rom-Coms are made about women FOR women but here is one for us!!

  • Thumbs up if you've ever met a girl who makes you want to be a better man.

  • @theballer04 If you thumbed up it means your whipped. I'd beat my own ass. It should be the other way around.

  • Do I make you want to be a better person RAHM? I hope so.

  • 22/04/2010

  • Compliments? How about you can wash my crutch, how about that?

  • @caltrof On the contrary, it takes huge steel ones to say that to a girl. You have no balls.

  • @bookishmuch it's very easy to appeal to a woman's sentimentality.

  • well mayb i overshot a little was aiming just enuf to keep you from walking out! :)) lol

  • 2 guys dont want to be better men

  • @TheBrett78 hey! I bet.... u'll be be on yer knees soon enough.... ( don't worry ) we're good on ghey here...

  • the woman is a little overacting here

  • Wow, two people were so moved by this scene that they thought the "like" button was actually the "dislike" button

    or they're just insensitive

  • hahahahahahaha!!!

    morosamt!!!

  • One of the best lines ever.

  • Jack Nicholson aka THE MOTHERFUCKING MAN.

  • Love the when he yells his order across the room

  • so touching lovely.

  • Fantastic line!!

What was hilarious though was i seem to recall, that moments later he blow it!!

  • lol nice description..."how is the greatest gift a woman can give to a man, to want him to be a better man"? lol that is a criticism...and an implication that the woman isn't satisfied iwth the man

learn english...then try to express yourself

  • BEST ACTOR EVER!!!

  • Nicholson or Hunt?

I take it you meant Jack so you got my vote

  • yeah, Jack. He's awesome!

  • one hell of a compliment.

  • i understood that, i cried at that point...great movie

  • this a excellent and original compliment. she may not have the power of doing the change but she is the inspiration....it's his comment I may have overshot a little) in the end that blows ir off but that's his character

  • I used to believe that was a compliment but somebody made me realize I was wrong. It is NOT a compliment. He's just saying something about himself. He is not saying anything about her. He says "you make me want to..." It's false, she has no power to do that. He should say "I like you, and because of that, *I* want to be a better man so I might have a chance of you liking me". That's what he really means. She has absolutely no responsibility in that. Is "I like you" a compliment? nope.

  • I don't know how you could twist and over think this so. He is saying she inspires him. That is a compliment.

  • sorry but you're wrong. "you inspire me" says more about me than it does about you. sorry if you find that "complicated".

  • It is not complicated at all. You are wrong. Hard to tell if you just don't get it, or if you are a troll. I will spell it out one time for you. He had a reaction/response to her. Not to the table or the chair, or to anyone else. He did not cause it to happen to himself. She was the cause of it. He was inspired by HER, and responded with the compliment that she made him want to be better.

  • wow! anybody who disagrees with you is either stupid or is a troll. and by troll, I assume you mean "posting a false opinion just to make people react". That makes you a great student of human psychology!

She is not the cause. His interpretation of what she is is the cause, or even, one of the causes. He could feel the same thing towards anyone else. It's inside him.

  • Lol, you didn't know what troll meant so you google'd it. Lol.

  • actually that's my own definition. thank you for agreeing with my definition.

  • If a dictionary is not enough to get you to understand this, consult your English teacher or find someone in your circle of acquaintances who has the background to speak to you about this. I have neither the time nor the inclination to continue trying to explain something so straight forward.

  • You can continue to spew your venom, your hate, it won't make me change my mind. You are full of poison. I feel sorry for you, but I feel more angry than sorry because you are trying to poison others.

  • the real "compliment" comes at the end of the movie. the point is to show his evolution throughout the story. he is finally able to say something nice about another person.

  • I view it more as, you're so great and the only person who ever made me want to be a better man

  • I see what you mean, but I'm still on the fence about it. I think what he says at the end of the movie is more interesting, more personal, what he says about what a good mother she is, etc.

Also, in this clip you will notice, as I did JUST NOW, that he says he hates pills but decides to ignore his hate of pills... Sounds to me a bit like manipulation by the pharmacological lobby. Actually ALL movies about mental illness sound a bit like that to me, since I found out about the power they wield.

  • Oh man I met a girl who makes me want to be a better man...I never told her that though because I didn't think women liked that sort of thing.

  • we do like that XD

  • @drunkdonutboy : " You make me want to be a better man" .

Women like that. It shows he is sharing his deepest secret, his true heart, that he is touched by her, and wants to do what he can to impress her. He wants her to be touched by him.

  • @apollowoman I was in love once, many years ago. It really makes you feel that you want to be a better man, not because you feel insecure, but because the person you love, who you see as perfect, inspires you to strive for perfection. You want to offer the best of yourself to him or her. To this date, all my accomplishments have been due to that one person and the very short time I was with her.

    Life is a blessing.

  • One of the best scenes ever.

  • I love that scene!!!!!

  • One of the signs of a great writer is his/her ability to change the mood of the reader/viewer in an instant e.g. from comedic to heartfelt emotion. This scene is such a piece of writing, applied sublimely between Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt. We have a lot to thank this sort of talent for.

  • gotta say writer/director in this case. i agree with you, for sure, but if this exact scene was filmed continuously on a tripod with a handycam? wouldn't be the same.

  • Yeah but aadding manga style animations? Hmmm

  • hahah, i'm not fully sure what you mean by that. if you mean adding manga animation would add to a handycam shot, i suppose that's opinion.

if you mean adding manga to the current scene would lessen the greatness, then i suppose that's also opinion, however all i was stating is that the good directing played as big of a role as the writing did in this, too. yes, manga animations could possibly ruin this, but so could crappy writing.

or maybe i've just got your statement completely confused.

  • I think all the credit goes to Helen Hunt in this scene, with the slight slow closeup when she understands what he means. She makes the script look good.

  • does anyone know the name of the song or tune that starts about 1:50 ???

  • love jack, love this movie and this scene..

  • I love hiiiiiiiiiiiiiim :D hehehehehehe!!!

  • @LaneyLounge:

("Vulnerability in a man is quite simply one of the sexiest things in.")

I definitely know, you are a woman becos you sound like my girlfriend. I gave my girlfriend this movie as a gift n she always fast forwards to this scene which is her MOST favourite scene and she had said that type of thing to me (almost like your words). • @drcoolguy Shit would work but chicks could totally tell its from this movie LOL

  • @afrometaldrummer its not about whether or not it would work, it's about whether or not it's true.

she said it was the nicest thing anyone said to her.

i'm glad she didn't see the movie, i still wonder if she ever did.

then she'd be like that ahole! stealing lines from movies!

  • yeah, this scene is real good..

  • what did you think of the entire movie overall?

  • it is the best line. And i hate (im using the word hate) romantic movies. Alot better than the cheesy line "you had me at hello". In the words of denis leary: What a piece of shit, jesus christ.

  • then he blew it lol.

yea i also want to say those lines to a friend i adore, cause she do makes me a better man.

    JC
