Did the show's makers destroy real trees just for this show (like at 0:29 and 0:35)? I will be very angry if they ravaged the environment just for a TV show.
As a kid I used to have nightmares about the tripods grabbing me and implanting a mind control device into my head. That is what a children's show should be like. Fuck yeah!
I'm an American, so I don't see BBC stuff except what we get, but there's at least one good show...Merlin is totally awesome. I don't know if we ever got Tripods though.
And there aren't three books, there are four. I love the prequel book.
@Chimel23 Tripods was definitely aired in the states, I remember watching it when I was very young on PBS in West Virginia. WV has always had a phenomenal PBS station, and we got a lot of really wonderful BBC shows. This scared the BEJEEZUS out of me when I was little!!!
What a wonderful clip! I was just thinking yesterday how great model FX were before everything went to CG absurdity. A blending of the two would be so fantastic to see these days! Tripods was a marvelous series, both for its involving stories and great FX!
Caught an episode of this series when I was in college & thought it was cool! Went out & read the trilogy (Love the fact that there were THREE books!) because of it! Great stuff for fans of vintage sci-fi!
the bbc is now just pure and utter crap im sorry to say ,i can not think of a tv programe i watch on there and the licence fee cant justify me match of the day ,wots on when im drunk asleep on my chair as it past 11pm
I have no idea why when the BBC was producing these ridulously bad low budget sci fi shows in the 60's 70's and 80's that they thought that people had no idea that these "tripods" weren't real and they had to do a "behind the scenes" show to show the viewers how the "magic" was done. Like you couldn't tell these models really looked fake and anything but real. Now that the BBC has money to produce realistic looking sci fi, the "behind the scenes" shows make sense.
@collegeman1988 At the time, The Tripods was one of the BBC's most expensive shows. t also utilised what was available in TV technology during the early to mid 80's, sometimes pioneering effects technology. It puzzles me everytime someone compares sfx from early years to that of today - such a lazy remark to make. Of course people in the 60's to 80's realised they were watching fiction, they weren't that naive, yet many didn't know the process of CSO and perhaps delighted in the magic of how.
Old Dr Who episodes may not look "realistic" but storywise they are still top class. Unfortunately there are more people like you to whom special effects and aliens is what makes science fiction rather than a good story. For this reason 90% of all sci fi made is crud, like some famous author once said.
Back in the mid 80's these tripods looked real enough for a tv show mostly targeted to young people and kids.
it's a friggin shame they never did the third season, this show is awesome, it still holds up today in my opinion! i need to get the books, now after 23 years i finally need to find out how it all ends!
@StathisQauid well, you could read the books to find out how it ends... but you're right - it IS a damn shame! But now a movie version is coming soon...
Yeah, and if the tripods hadn't been made into a TV show, you'd all be wanting a tripods movie. But since it's a TV show, you think you'll hate it because the TV was old.
@StathisQauid Are you saying I don't appreciate well hand crafted things anymore? Because actually I do. And I love this show. That doesn't mean I shouldn't want a movie either.
@Gryfu1 nah, i guess you got me wrong! i meant the generation that is now between 12 and 15 in general, of course there are exeptions, i sure did not mean you! your comments proof very well that you like handcrafted stuff and we wouldn't have this nice conversation over the last weeks if either of us wouldn't like this show or the real deal in effects!;)
i like the tripod i watch this evry day i want to know where you may buy this item and place state and store name address please i want to know cause i need too know where please make a video a you will have lots of customers please may you do that i watch this sence i was six and now im nine please show me thanks nices show ever
Thanks for this. That was so cool. I would have thought they'd use stop motion for something like that, but the movement was a bit different than you'd expect from stop motion. The puppet is just amazing.
Unfortunately, I've long since lost the full tape and edited the Tripod clip to another tape around the time of broadcast, nearly 20 years ago. But from memory, he goes on to talk about the possibilities of CSO or blue screen but this did not feature The Tripods. Cheers, G.
I've never seen this but those things are freaky as fuck. I wonder if the episodes are available on dvd.
