lol; I agree that notes sound better than chords but here's my point of view and I'm sure alot of peoples. Notes are risky, and what I mean is he is a great singer too, so him doing notes would probally take a lot of his focus away from his brilliant voice. If you can't sing then you should have to prove yourself more but if you can chords are fine because you can fill the harmony with your voice. Oh and btw I am sure he can do both, check out his December cover he does that one perfect. :P
