I believe this is actually the appeal of simpler fighting games like Smash Bros. Take away the long combo strings and super meters and reduce the gameplay to a simple, direct approach; then, the players will have only their mindgames to rely on to win.

It isn't amazing to watch but I bet those two players were very engaged in the gameplay at the time.

Well Melee and Smash 64 do give interesting matches depending on the character (those 2 do have their own forms of combos. Especially 64).

Though yeah. Games that are really easy to pick up and play as long as they have some other gimmick (like Smash's oodles of Nintendo characters) are guaranteed profit and a competitive scene of some sort.
