  • I got some of these today. they are cheap. I got 15 of them for $1

  • @dasadler123 Hey I bought a minnow for my paroon shark to eat but instead whenever my shark went for a bight the minnow would get so aggressive like this and they would fight just like in this vid. I was so shocked and i searched minnows fighting and got here. And for @georgepetlover they are definitely fighting because paroons and minnows don't mate. Nice vid

  • Nice setup. At Petsmart there are red minnows that are 13 cents. If I put some in a tank with large goldfish....will the minnows get eaten? Not that I want them as feeders I just wanted to see if minnows would eat some grass shrimp I have. Then I was just going to put them in a community tank.

  • Nope, no bass. just the rosy reds and the mosquito fish.

  • is there some bass in there also

  • are these plastic cup by the way?

  • how many minnows do u have in this 20 gallon? I got one too, and I am thinking geting them soon :)

  • those are mosquito fish in the tank. I love them I think they are very interesting to watch in my tanks

  • i have three pet minow right now but there going to upgrade 2 a 55 with some gold fish and they will get about 10 more minnows there so much fun i have had them for like 8 months

  • @fingerboarder329 ur getting gold fish and minnows to put in a 55? that's the saddest shit i've heard since i started owning fish.....

  • u dumbass they are mating

  • @taylorpatnode Why is there always some jackass like you that thinks he knows what he is talking about. Seems there is always one on youtube. I breed these, I know the difference between mating and territorial disputes.

  • @dasadler123 FINISH!

  • how do we tell i there male or female

  • @georgepetlover Male fathead minnow males get black heads and vertical stripes down their bodies and on their fins. They also get white breeding tubercles like goldfish and fleshy black growths on top of their heads. The breeding tubercles occur in three rows on the snout. Rosy red minnow males pretty much lack the color change but do get a clear fleshy growth on top of their heads and barely visible white tubercles. Females lack tubercles, fleshy growths, and vertical stripes.

  • Awesome!! How many gallon?

  • @foreverspongebob84 This is an old 20 gal that I've had since I was like 15 hahaha!

  • I love the Rosy Red Minnows. I know they are a "feeder fish" but they have so much personality. I have a 10 gal set up with 3 of them right now and they are just fun to watch. especially at feeding time. I might get some more of them or some White Clouds to finish it off.

  • @clemsonfight Yeah they sure are a lot of fun. it just goes to show that you don't have to spend a large amount of money to enjoy the hobby

  • okay so i see you have some other fish they look familiar because i have some of them! what are they called to me for now their like unknown because i dont know what kind of fish they are please help and tell me :D thanks.

  • @juanxzombie Those are Gambusia or the mosquito fish. I think I spelled that right. They are a livebearer related to the guppy.

  • if the minnows fight, could one die?

  • @Godzilla5alien No it isn't to the death. It's a territorial dispute. They basically size each other up till the weaker one gives up and goes away!

  • Do I spy a few mosquitofish? I like your combination. Rosy Reds, even though are considered feeders, are very very cool fish.

  • any breeding tips? pm or reply to me :D plzzzz

  • @h8hax Go to robyns rosy red breeding page. Just type in Robyns rosy red in your search and it will get you to the page. It gave me all the info I needed to get my fish to breed. Let me know if you have any more questions.

  • I've had them for a couple months now, and most of them are adult size, or close to it. I have some places in the tank, but I was thinking about putting a small clay pot in there for them to breed in. They're in a 30 gallon. I already have a big rainbow rock (two large holes in it), a small cave, and a large skull decor. Lol. Mk. I wasn't sure. The things I was reading is put pebbles in the cup they're breeding in, but I have sand, so yeah.

  • @kissofcrimison From what I've seen they like to have a smooth flat surface to lay their eggs on. When mine lay eggs they always do it on the top surface on the inside of the cup. Maybe you don't have any surfaces that are "acceptable". Try the clay pot, and try some other things and just watch to see what they do. You will know when they claim their territory.

  • Mine do that all day. It's annoying to be quite honest. lol. I have a question, do they have a problem breeding in sand? I have school of them (8-15) and they haven't bred yet. I was never looking to breed them, but it would be interesting to watch.

  • @kissofcrimison It might be that they just aren't old enough yet. Do you have areas in the tank that they can claim as territory? If you haven't had them long that could be the problem also. I don't think the substrate really matters to them.

  • Awesome tank setup the stacked cups are really cool, any luck getting them to spawn.

  • how do i clean a tank with out sucking out crush coral? cause my crush coral is like a white sand

  • @wardogg123 Just a regular gravel vacuum. Most of it is too heavy to be sucked up. Some of it will be but it isn't a biggie.

  • Hey you remember me right? Well do you know if 6 cichlids is to much for a 30 gallon? Because they could grow to be like 5 to 6 inches so i was just wondering if you can help me out here?

  • @wardogg123 What type of cichlid are they? If they are babies they should be ok for a while, but that is pushing it.

  • @dasadler123 they are african cichlids so i don't know cause they get pretty aggressive. I have like to small yellow labs in there already

  • @wardogg123 It depends on what type of african cichlid. Some are more aggressive than others. To be honest I think a 30gal is too small at least when they get bigger.

  • @dasadler123 OK then, well cause like i cant get like a bigger tank right now cause i dont have room n the money right now so well see from there if not im just have 3 cichlids 1 male n two females well i plan to get yellow labs and i for got whats the orange one called and the blue ones but i forgot the name.

  • @wardogg123 They will probably be ok. Yellow labs are not huge cichlids and your orange ones are probably red zebras and they don't get huge either. You will probably be fine. Just watch for abnormal aggression that the crowding might cause.

  • @dasadler123 alright then well thanks a lot for the help. Hey are you like an expert or somthing? or do you just like taking care of fish as a hobby?

  • @wardogg123 Nope not an expert, just have lots of experience. I've had at least one aquarium since I was 10. So I do know quite a bit about freshwater aquariums. Saltwater on the other hand, I just started so things are going pretty good there too.

  • @dasadler123 alright then well if i have any more question i be sure to come ask you. =D

  • @dasadler123 hey what type of cichlid pellet do you recommend?

  • @wardogg123 I use hikari cichlid staple and supplement with brine shrimp and raw shrimp from the grocery store.

  • @dasadler123 Hey, do you know if i can just add drinking water i got from the store to the tank when i do a water change without adding chemical to to the drinking water?

  • @wardogg123 Most drinking water has had minerals added back into it for flavor. You can use the ro/di water from the dispenser at walmart or buy distilled water. that would be the best.

  • @dasadler123 So buy those like 1 gallon water for 25 cent from the machine thing be good or no?

  • @wardogg123 That's what I used in my tank until I had the money to buy a RO/DI unit. I never had any issues, so I would say go for it!

  • I've always wanted to breed rosy reds, have you had any success? If you have let me know what you did to possibly induce them into breeding besides setting up territory for them. Did you get those from the local fish store? I love the grey ones that have lateral lines on them.

  • @TRP1035 I just made sure that they had territories like you said. I made sure that my water was pristine. I did water changes once a week at about 5%. Keep your water temp up from about 70 to about 73-75. Also if you have a big male he will prompt the other males to breed. If you don't have one try to get a hold of one.

  • Thanks! Do you just add tap water to your tank? I've heard treating your tap water with de-chlorinate doesn't really do a whole lot, what do you use?

  • @TRP1035 I use RO/DI water in both my saltwater aquariums and my freshwater. If you can't get it at your local pet store Walmart has a Culligan dispenser that has RO/DI water for 30 cents a gallon.

  • One other question (Sorry I'm asking alot), are those plastic cups? I was thinking of using non-colored plastic cups for breeding, or some PVC tubing, you think cups would be alright in the water?

  • @TRP1035 No problem with the questions. I don't see why you couldn't and you can for sure use the pvc.

  • Sorry im back again umm i just bought me a new african cichlid it's nickel size and i decide to put it with my rosy but umm i thought the cichlid would probably rule the tank but instead on of my big rosy red is not having it so it is always chasing it when it see the cichlid is that unusual isn't it cause i thought it been the opposite right?

  • @wardogg123 It's because the rosies have already established territories. Rearrange the rocks or whatever you have in your tank to "destroy" the rosie's territory. If that doesn't work let me know, I have a couple of other suggestions that might help. =)

  • @dasadler123

Umm i cant rearrange the rock cause there is no rock where the rosy are at. The rosy is just under my filter in open space. My Red tail is pretty peaceful too it don't bother any of my other fish except when they get close to him. My African clam down a bit and dont bother the rosy as much any more but still is some what semi aggressive but should i buy pvc pipes and cut them in pieces and put it in there?

  • @wardogg123 Ok yeah just put some stuff in there to give hiding areas or places to set up territories. If you do that it should tone down that aggression a little bit. Kind of out of sight out of mind.

  • Ok thx let me ask you something is it possible for the cichlid to have force one of my rosy red in a agression mode, because one of my rosy red was peaceful but now he attacks everyone in the tank except my red tail.

  • @wardogg123 Sure adding in any new fish can bring out aggression. The established fish have territories and by adding new fish in your disrupting that. Give it time they will settle down again.

  • @dasadler123 some of my rosy red grown this brown like dot on there body and i dont know if that is Ick because ick is white dots but this is like a big brown dot but there is only one or two dot on them so im not so sure if its a disease.

  • @wardogg123 Shoot, not sure. Sounds like it might be a secondary infection from a parasite. Try Quik Cure. It cures ich and other parasite problems. Just try to remember to pull out your carbon first and anything you don't want to be stained blue.

  • OK i have a question or two. So how do you tell if one is a male or female and a how much minnows can be in a 10gallon? Do they require a certain PH level or temperature to breed?

  • @wardogg123 Go to robyns rosy red breeding page. Just type in Robyns rosy red in your search and it will get you to the page. It gave me all the info I needed to get my fish to breed. Let me know if you have any more questions.

  • @dasadler123 Ok thx i learn a bit more on the rosy red breeding page. Well i have like 6 of them in a 10 gallon with a red tail but the red tail don't really bother them unless they get in the red tails way. Also one of my Rosy wont eat on the surface with the other but only likes to eat when the flakes fall down but i dont know why he does that but i think he is a male cause he likes to go into this rock all by himself and stay there an dont really swim with the others but sometimes do.

  • @wardogg123 Then that probably is a male. You will be able to tell with the fatty lumps on his head or by the turbicles. But that is one thing the male will do it always stay in his "territory". Your part way there!!! =)

  • Hey, I love that idea with the cups... I'm planning on breeding a few rosy reds and guppies and breed them all (separately) within a 10 gallon aquarium in front of a 15 gallon turtle aquarium. The heater is set to 75 degrees, no filter/pump yet but I'm working on it.

My question is this: The turtle will try to bite at the glass to get to the fish in the aquarium in front, should I put paper in between to hide the fish's fate? Will the fish still breed while seeing a turtle on the other side?

  • @turgsh01 If possible you should move the fish away from the turtle. The fish probably won't breed if they are stress which the turtle is probably sure to do. If not yeah a piece of paper or aquarium backing should work.

  • @dasadler123 Thanks, will do... though right now, they don't seem to notice the turtle at all... but it's better safe then sorry at least until I have the breeding started.

I have 3 more questions if you don't mind me asking... What would you say the minimum size the cups or containers need to be for them to be happy to breed in? And does the eggs kind of stick to the surface it's touching or would they get stirred up if I try to move the cups/containers? ...................

  • @turgsh01 Well I used empty crystal light containers. It is a drink mix in case you don't know. Just give them nooks and crannies to hide in and they will most likely use those as territories.

  • My 3rd question and hopefully my last (2 part question though); Is it ok to leave the male with the eggs all alone, or should I keep him away as well, cuz like, do the eggs require any attention at all if the male isn't around to take care of them (cuz I don't want to do the blue dye trick with tweezers). I've noticed that all the fish love turtle food (pellets) which sink to the bottom, so if the male gets hungry, the turtle food would be right beside him the entire time for him to snack on.

  • @turgsh01 Oddly enough the father will take care of and protect the eggs from intruders. Not seen very often in this type of fish. He will eat the eggs that have fungus so no worries there. You will need to remove them after they hatch though. Just use a net breeder that's what I use. I don't mind the questions at all by the way, happy to help if I can.

  • @dasadler123 Thank you very much.

I bought a tank divider for separating the fish from the male, so I hope I don't need a breeder net.

I know what crystal light is but I haven't seen any containers yet, just the little packets in a box.

I've been also thinking about getting some PVC pipe and molding it in a such a way that it gets a rough surface to it and kind of bulges in certain areas from the inside out so the eggs stay put better and just cap off one of the ends for easier defense.

  • do yo move the eggs to another tank or do you just take a chance on the other fish eating the fry?

  • @SCOTTA1 After the eggs hatch I remove them and put them in a 5 gallon tank and there they become free swimming and grow. I put them back in the tank when they are about an inch long.

  • have you got yours to breed yet

  • @turtlefreak11900 Yes! I have had really good luck with breeding them. I don't even really have to do anything. They are like rabbits!! I just try to make sure their water quality is pristine and they do the rest

  • do they lay eggs or do they give live birth

  • @turtlefreak11900 They lay eggs and the father is rather good at protecting them from other fish. They are super easy to breed you should try it.

  • yeah im trying to breed them right now

  • @turtlefreak11900 Give the males little nooks and crannies to make a nest in. They will set up territories. I'm using empty Crystallight tubes.

  • i have sub way cups in there with them but they havent set up territories yet im going to pu some more stuff in with the what would you suggest that i put in there with them i have about 12 or 14 in there right now they were bought as feeders but my turtles dont want them so is this a problem that there with my turtles

  • how big do they have to be breed

  • what could i use to breed them in because my 10 gallon tank i was going to breed them in busted on me tonight

  • @turtlefreak11900 These guys are sooo easy to take care of. You could have them live in a bucket as long as you keep the water filtered and clean. So give anything a shot. these guys are pretty tough.
