That's what a lot of folks don't understand about roadsters. They think little sporty two seaters are all supposed to have muscle car straight-line power. When I had an MX-5, it used to be fun to watch guys with 300hp cars keep up in traffic. The fun with roadsters comes in the complete control the driver has with limited braking. The go-cart feeling we all had as kids and the relative ease of parking and weaving through the heaviest of traffic.

Well, apparently Mercedes sold enough of 'em to break even, but there were quite a lot of issues with it in the beginning, and the guarantee cost Mercedes too much, so they stopped production. Pity though, great concept, great driving experience (though it's not very fast), and very cheap to drive.

Not driven this type of Smart, but the one I did drive had the most appalling gearbox of all time, made you feel sea sick in a mile or two with the back and forth pitching.... girls smiled at it though!

The mini has 69 hp more then the smart (thats aprox 70% more power), ofcourse it will win. With or without the 300kg.

Fifth gear doesnt seem to know there is auto "and" manual mode on the smart. Manual mode is alot better when driving fast. Auto works best for city driving etc.

I own a standard Roadster 82HP myself and love it. Its not sports-fast, but it feels fast and it is much fun to drive.

If the smart was manually shifted the car could make way more refs and would beat the mini. Mini doesnt have the looks like the smart either, smarts are more unique in my opinion.

The Roadster keeps it value waaaay better than the Mini. Therefore it's much better buy. You can buy a Roadster, drive it for a year or two and sell it for the same price!

It's also super cheap to insure and consumes half the petrol compared to the Mini.

Also, the smart is eye candy, super fun to drive and rear-wheel drive with rear engine. It's REALLY fun in the wintertime with proper winter tyres. ESP off and power slides all the time. :)

In the US the mini is more practical (more power), probably about the same insurance rates because that Smart would be considered a sport coupe by insurance companies here, and it's that much more fuel efficient if equipped with a gas engine. Mini holds their value extremely well in the US.

To it's credit at least the Smart Roadster is original. The Mini is a German copy of a British Original, whether they bought the right to use the name or not. It's a better than the original copy, but a copy. If Honda bought the right to produce a copy of a Norton and made it in Japan, would it be a Norton? We had real Minnie's back in the 60's, they were fun to drive and cheep to buy, both of these cars are freaking expensive! How about some fun vehicles for the rest of us?

This is a apples to oranges comparison. The Smart gets almost 50% more mileage per gallon. So if you are still using a car as a daily driver to work...the Smart is still well a smarter choice.

And I msut say the Smart did well only loosing by 2 seconds in a 60 second race. The ONLY real advantage the Mini has to me is that the mini has a back seat.

Why didn't they test the good brabus smart? It has two of the engines this one has to make it a v6 biturbo with 218 hp and a different gear box. That would have beaten down the Cooper.

well if i had to chose between a Smart Roadster coupe or a Mini Cooper i would get the smart. In the US the Mini has deserved the right of being a "chick" car, just like the new Volkswagen beetle. mabe if the mini was in Green or Black i would drive it, but theres no question that you look cooler in a Smart, they are rarer and get you from point A to point B

It's hard to call it a "Mini" when it feels like a SUV next to the Roadster. And they are comparing an original car that has a strong concept, and the "new version" of the good'ol Mini, the many-decades-old cult object. Whlist the design and sales prove Mini as a successful car, it's a total failure for sake of the original thing. It's large, complicated, and pricey. Way better than the New Beetle weirdo though. I think Ford Ka serves right as the new Beetle, and Smart ForTwo as the new Mini.

we've found something out here. If you want to go round a track faster, get the Mini. If you just want to drive about a bit on normal roads and look good doing it, get the Smart. Mini's look good normally, but not convertable, it just ruins the style.
