I sort by fabric. Whether it's a comforter or just regular clothes, I treat them the same. If the comforter is cotton, I treat it like cotton clothes, though I wash separately because the comforter is so large

I don't like the weight of a comforter blanket. In winter, I sleep with an electric blanket. It is thin, light weight and keeps me toasty warm. It is also very washable and won't overload your washer.
