You have to remember that upon it's release in 1996, it was considered a safe design with modern safety measures. It performed on a par with the Renaults, Fords, Vauxhalls, Nissans and Pergeots etc at the time. One can't compare early 90's designs and put them down when compared to todays designs, Safety didn't really take off as a priority until the late 90's.
