That's right; firearms and families are utterly incompatible even though one half of all housholds in the US has one or more firearms. This noise comes up every time. Curiously too, it wasn't a "family safety" issue until Reagan nixed them in 80's which apparently had no effect on poaching since then, either. Lessee, how many gun injuries since reinstated...none? And, of course, only government employees could need a gun for protection. Parks are safe enough for us but not them.

Well, for self defense you could argue that scopes could be unethical... I have not heard of a self defense purpose necessary to shoot over 100 yards.

•Make yourself look as big as possible standing up and putting your arms in the air or by using towels, jackets, etc. around you to make you look bigger.

•Never get between a bear & her cubs.

•Never try to take food back from a bear!

Nesbitt--I have backpacked in Yosemite and Tahoe for 45 years. I have dealt with bears on four separate occasions. The advice I gave is accurate and correct behavior for camping. Your ignorance is a good reason why guns should not be alowed in parks. If bears scare you so much, you should stay home. There are about 4,000 reported crimes a year in National Park and 95% are minor larceny. This is out of 280 million visitors. So we are overturning 94 years of National Park regulations, changing the character of our parks for a crime wave that doesn't exist. It's changing the character of the parks that offends me the most.

I usually support the NRA in their efforts to uphold gun rights,but not in this instance.Infringe means to cut off or truncate,like amputate.Not allowing guns in National Parks is not an infringement of gun rights.Wild West towns could enforce laws to turn guns in at the edge of town.The Park Service should be able to enforce laws to keep guns out of the Parks.

Part of the creation of Yellowstone were provisions outlawing hunting and the killing of Indians inside the National Park.Part of those provisions was; only Park personnel were allowed to carry firearms inside the National Park...I don't think the Park Service is set up to screen for firearms...If a Ranger has reasonable suspicion that people bringing firearms into National Parks might be hunters,there WOULD be just cause to search and seize.
