That's right; firearms and families are utterly incompatible even though one half of all housholds in the US has one or more firearms. This noise comes up every time. Curiously too, it wasn't a "family safety" issue until Reagan nixed them in 80's which apparently had no effect on poaching since then, either. Lessee, how many gun injuries since reinstated...none? And, of course, only government employees could need a gun for protection. Parks are safe enough for us but not them.
Well, for self defense you could argue that scopes could be unethical... I have not heard of a self defense purpose necessary to shoot over 100 yards.
The bill was passed and signed into law by Obama; he did not support the law. From MSNBC: "Democrats lawmakers and aides said they didn’t have enough time to send the bill to the House-Senate conference committee — where the gun provision could have been removed without a vote — and still get the bill to Obama by the Memorial Day weekend as he requested."
No matter how it happened, it's another feather in freedoms hat. It won't increase poaching I can assure you. It was their only argument.
•Make a lot of noise, yell, bang pots & pans, or anything noisy you have nearby.
•Make yourself look as big as possible standing up and putting your arms in the air or by using towels, jackets, etc. around you to make you look bigger.

•Never surround the bear - make sure it has an available escape route.

Nesbitt--I have backpacked in Yosemite and Tahoe for 45 years. I have dealt with bears on four separate occasions. The advice I gave is accurate and correct behavior for camping. @nesbitt615, Your hostility and immatururity duly noted. But tell me: When was the last bear attack in Yosemite, and WHY did it occur? If a guy doesn't put his food away and follow protocol' do you still feel he has the right to shoot a bear who comes into his camp?
@JamCamp06 your piousness and arrogance has been logged down and stored for future reference. And who said anything about bear attacks?!?!?! There was just a photographer attacked in July (and the park service conceals that information) My problem is with the assholes of the two legged nature. And by the way, hanging food in a national park is a crime. Go play your banjo shut the fuck up! If YOU don't start something with a gun owner there won't be any problems Mr. Smarty tough guy.
@nesbitt615 So you take guns to the National Parks to protect yourself from other campers? Scared cowardly little person. You can't discuss intelligently so you attack. You are so afraid you have to have lethal firepower on your hip in places of peace. And who talked about bears? Earlier posters, not you. I guess you need a gun because you can't reason. Sad little animal.
@JamCamp06 What ever you say asshole! If you ever want to meet up just let me know. I'll leave the gun at home. It sounds like you want to fight. Drunken assholes starting fights over stupid shit is not "Family friendly" I brought my .40 S&W last fall when it was still illegal and guess what? so did some other asshole who wanted to start some shit because my wife walked on the outskirts of his campsite to get to the bathrooms. he showed her the pistol on his table I showed him the barrel of mine! it was done and over with. @nesbitt615 and without ur firearm you would have been in trouble right? some asshole who prob doesn't have a permit for his firarm threatens a family member if ur not packing yourself then who is going to help u? no one is the answer. GREAT WORK MY FRIEND
@jackalopejacky Well truthfully, The situation could have been handled with out a display of force (could of ignored him and walked away, called the cops) But I guarantee he would have been a problem all evening and would have flashed someone else his "piece". But I do feel some safety having my weapon at a camp site.
If a bear tries to maul you, you give him your food and he'll leave you alone. No need to shoot him. That's why you string your food up, so he can't get it, and moves on. If a bear comes at you, clang on pots and pans and he'll run away. Harmonica works too. No need to shoot him.
And if you do shoot him, and wound him,
now you have a major problem of rage on your hands. So DO shoot to kill.
Beaner--It's also the character of guns. The purpose of a car is to drive it. The purpose of a gun is to shoot something. Shooting doesn't belong in National Parks. OK, time to go eat my peas. By the way, can you play a musical instrument?
Just got back from Glacier National Park. Today was the first day you were allowed to carry LOADED guns into the park! I took my 357/44mag/30-6 and a couple of 9mm's...This time of year those ground squirrels can be very aggressive! WTF!
As long as national parks allow admittance to felons, drug addicts, child molesters, con artists, murderers, rapist, illegal immigrants, sociopaths, psychopaths, lawyers, politicians and mentally ill people, then I, a sane law abiding citizen should be able to carry a firearm within the park as well.
I am among those upset by new law. Last year at Yosemite the drunks at their campfires were out of control yelling a screaming into the night. Now they will have guns. National parks are for families and little kids. What/Who do the gun carriers want to shoot?
@JamCamp06 yes every gun owner is a loud drunk. how ignorant to gun owners are u? do you really think we're a bunch of drunken rednecks? so what if i wanna walk around with an AR15 on my back in the woods. bears maul people all the time and bare mace just doesnt cut it. so please do your homework before you even speak on the issue.
Beaner-- I did not say every gun owner, now, did I? Can you guarantee me that not one legal gun owner is a drunk? Cause thatis all it takes. What are the laws about beer and guns? My thought is that
If you are so fearful you have to carry a weapon in the National Parks, you should stay home in front of the TV. If you go to the Parks website, not one person writes about how dangerous it is, and they wish we had guns.
well realistically speaking, you can kill a person with a car just as easily as a firearm. so dont give me that "it takes just one shit" more people are killed in drunk driving accidents than gun related deaths across the board. but millions of cars are on the road every day. but you dont see them banned.

yea fuckers lets use a sniper for protection. mgiht as well use a fucking bazuka a fing sniper can kill it has alot of penatration and bleedsyou to death.self defense against these animals would be a weak handgun or a knife at most. the fact that this bastard says you need a sniper for protection in national parks makes you think hes gona go hunt thats illegal to do that there
I usually support the NRA in their efforts to uphold gun rights, but not in this instance.Infringe means to cut off or truncate, like amputate. Not allowing guns in National Parks is not an infringement of gun rights.Wild West towns could enforce laws to turn guns in at the edge of town. The Park Service should be able to enforce laws to keep guns out of the Parks.
In the parlance of the time that the 2nd Amend. was written, the word infringe meant to amputate or permanently remove.Unless you permanently move into a National Park or Wildlife Refuge, your 2nd Amend. wait887 is on your side of the arguement, and has mentioned Supreme Court decisions. Two of the very few Supreme Court decisions on the subject were;that laws prohibiting machine guns and sawed-off shotguns are legal and that ordering guns out of the backs of magazines are legal,as well...No one is talking about denying anyone the right to defend oneself(like the right to know,it's not mentioned in the Constitution).
actually the phrasing "well regulated," at the time that the constitution was written meant, "well trained." Not heavily regulated. the SCOTUS proceedings even brought up that distinction in the wording.
The well self-regulated thing, yes,;and militia(the multiple of militia is miltia, not militias,as the modern news press insists)are for the maintenance of free states. The National Parks and Wildlife Refuges,as with all Federal Property are in the states, but do not belong to them. The Parks are, technically,in the city-state of Washington D.C.The California Militia are the militia of California, not Yosemite or Kings Canyon/Sequoia.
Why would national parks be any different than other public areas where carrying is permitted? Is the park service set up to search every person for weapons? Is that Constitutional without just cause? Just asking.
Part of the creation of Yellowstone were provisions outlawing hunting and the killing of Indians inside the National Park.Part of those provisions was; only Park personnel were allowed to carry firearms inside the National Park...I don't think the Park Service is set up to screen for firearms...If a Ranger has reasonable suspicion that people bringing firearms into National Parks might be hunters, there WOULD be just cause to search and seize.
It's time to have a constructive discussion about gun laws in America. Hunters can't continue to bitch about crime in cities without city folk understanding the long legacy of hunting in this country. The NRA is going to have to back off the rhetoric if there is to be a true rational national discussion.
