why do some airplanes produce black contrails while some others produce white?

Could be only shadows... also, some older engines don't burn as clean as the more recent designs.

white = true contrails.

because the whiteness of the contrail is the light refracting through the frozen exhaust, go above and there is nothing for it to refract off.

Just curious, why are some blackish grey while others are white?

Contrails or airplanes? The darker contrails are from the older aircraft (like the B-52's) typically.

Also, at low altitudes it's jetblast making it darker - but the older the aircraft is, the more black contrails...

Last September I was on a flight from Seattle to Houston and noticed the smooth but quick change in direction....looked out the window to see an AA jet about to t-bone us! I could count the rivits in the window frames!!!!

Those were actually B-52's flying in formation. Kind of a rare sight for us. A 747 flew under us in another scene.

Fantastic. Back before 9/11, I was invited to sit up in the cockpit of a commercial jet a couple of times, and on one occasion, I got to witness a flyby like these. It was AWESOME -- which, coming from me is saying something, since I'm petrified of flying. :)
