@danielgchan If your mac is running slow in iMovie you need to free up some space. delete some shit off of your hard drive. your computer is tired dude.
Nice job buddy. Would you take some advice from an Electrical Engineer? First, never touch the RAM modules or even take out of the electrostatic packages until you wash your hands to rid grease. Secondly, you must ground your body on something metal that will drain the capacitive charge your body carries (like when you rub your feet on a rug and shock someone). Thirdly, never touch the gold electrical connections on the memory board, else you may destroy or partial impair the memory.
Some iMacs from 2009 have the slot on the right instead of the left. Look inside with a flashlight and you will be able to see easily which side matches the slot on your memory card.
I realize the video is from 2008 ( the year of my current iMac ) but,
you can put up to 6 Gigs, although it's not told to ( 1 4gig in 1 slot and 2gig in the other )
I saw this spoken about on a good number of forums, there is a slight set off because the memory is different but nothing you would notice from what I've read.
You just have to make sure you match up the specs and you should be good : )
hey man, i have ordered the same kit as you. How has the extra 3gb changed your computer?, i can imagine it has made it quite alot faster, the 1gb ram is so fucking slow.
I had the white screen of death and 3 beeps. Followed your video to rip out some of my ram -- and wham bam thank you ram -- got my iMac back and up and running!!!!
I found this via Google and I want to thank you -- I had no idea it would be this simple but it wouldn't have been even as simple as it was if I hadn't seen your video first. Thanks for posting this!
you also need to ground the electricity in your body whilst touching all of this stuff... or else is can damage the ram. So try not to touch it physically without gloves... just thought I would mention that important piece of info.
Big improvement for my iMac. I also recommend taking a can of pressurized air and thoroughly blowing out the slots before reinstall. A ton of dust blew out of my memory slots. Wear cotton (not polyester) clothing to prevent static buildup.
I have the old white imac and i have just over 2gb of memory remaining and i was wondering if i would lose anything when i took out the 1gb stick. a reply would be great!
Thanks, this is a lot of help for me. I was going to box my iMac and transport it to the Apple store. Great job. :0) Oh question: The Crucial memory you installed you said $110.00 is that for one or both bars? Is Crucial after market?
@technochook - wear cotton clothing, not polyester, as it can cause static buildup. no gloves needed. another thing I recommend is to use a can of spray air to blow out the slots and rid them of dust before install.

You had an 24inch imac, and Only had 1gb of ram ? Surprised it could even run iTunes and safari at the same time. And you bought the worst ram, crucial ram is very good but you need 800Mhz for this mac :) sorry to say but, it's cheap now :) so I say go get some :)
@xXPuR3R3fl3xXx Whatever, I personally like macs, they just seem a lot more stable and just feel right to me. It's ok for people to have an opinion. It's like me getting mad at you because I thought MW2 was good and you didn't. That would just be stupid, if the world liked the same thing, everything would suck.
@xXPuR3R3fl3xXx lol ok troll, too bad you guys are stuck on usb 3.0, which is now obsolete due to thunderbolt, which is a lot faster (2x) than usb 3.0. So please stop, they are just different, don't try to compare them, and back then nobody thought you would need more than 4 gb of ram anyways. It's old technology so of coarse it's going to be a bit crappy. And now they can handle a lot more (more than you could put in it) so just stop. Don't start a PC vs Mac war.
@xXPuR3R3fl3xXx Lol thats a shit comp son, don't go bragging if you can't back it up. You want to talk about specs that speak for themselves... How about 64gig's of ram 8TB Hard drive space and two 2.93Ghz 6-Core intel Xeon processors... You only reason you chirp macs is because you wish you had one...
hey why did u take out the 1GB memory? Y didn't you leave it and add the 4 GB to get 5 GB of RAM in total? Are you not suppose to do that cuz it might damage the imac or sumthing? I just ordered 4 GB so just want some opinion. Thanks
@mitsubishigalant Depending on which imac you have, it may only support up to 4GBs. I have a 2007, and that only supports 4GB. I believe the mid-2008s and 2009s and newer support higher. Don't quote me on that, I just know about the 2007 for sure.
@liquidfigment Ohhh I see. My iMac is the 2008 one. so I guess it will only support up to 4GB. But once the RAM shipments arrives this week which im super excited, im gonna try to see if it supports 5 GB or not. But from 1 GB to 4 GB is a huge upgrade so ill be happy with 4 GB
@mitsubishigalant Although they say the limit for this imac model (2007-2008) is 4 Gb (2 x 2Gb) when it can be 6Gb (2+4Gb) but sadly 8 Gb is not supported (2 x 4Gb) :( It's too unstable and makes your computer freeze. D:
@FitzyzGun How? It's just RAM? They even have a tutorial on their website. Although they say the limit for this imac model (2007-2008) is 4 Gb (2 x 2Gb) when it can be 6Gb (2+4Gb) but sadly 8 Gb is not supported (2 x 4Gb) :( It's too unstable and makes your computer freeze. D:
Nice vid, its 667 megahertz btw not megabytes lol the 667 is referring to the speed at which the ram runs not a physical amount, that would be the 2 gigabyte part.
I'm not a mac user and am more of a Windows person, Does the Mac OS have something equivalent to the page file in windows or swap file in linux? What's it called?
I am by NO means a computer pro, but this was so simple thanks to this video!!! Some notes to keep in mind, it does take some pulling to unplug the old memory, so don't be shy with it. By the same token, you need to push-in the new memory with some light force. All is all, unplugging the I-Mac wires to turn over the machine to expose the Memory area, removing the access panel, removing both memory chips, installing the new ones, took about ( no kidding ) FIVE MINUTES! I did it!!!!
Hey- applemaster- Great VIDEO!!!!!! My husband's iMac froze up, and wouldn't turn one- it just kept giving one beep. I looked that up on the Apple Chat boards and it said that one beep meant it wasn't recognizing the RAM. It suggested pulling the RAM out and putting it back in, which I had NO idea how to do until I saw your video. We watched it, my husband pulled the RAM out, put it back in and viola!!! It works. Saved us a ton of time and money. Thanks again for a great, easy video!!
@Ncast530 - I don't think so - you're adding memory to allow the computer to perform its tasks more efficiently, e.g. cache memory and internal stuff - not removing anything. Also, in the vid, when he turns it on, you can see his twitter account popping up, which would suggest nothing has been removed and still has the same settings. I think.
@Ncast530 no you wont lose anything, RAM does not have anything saved on it as it is only temporary memory used for processes like running a programme or gaming etc.
I'm happy to see that you can actually upgrade the ram of your imac. I have just bought one online, will receive it next week, and that was one of my main concerns.
is it possible to upgrade the ram on an imac or macbook pro, by replacing just one of the ram modules? so one was say 2gb and the other was 1gb? would that work or do you have to replace both to even amounts?
that ram wont make your computer fly really... it will increase the amount of temporary data you can handle which will help it go faster in that sector.
an SSD would make it faster... but I'm not saying to do that necessarily...
Good job, i would like to get 4 gigs in mine some day
"it just made the bong sound, means i didn't totally screw it up"
that was my favorite part of this video
how old are you, cause right around your age i started getting good with computers and technics, like ipod apps and such, and you apear to be very smart for your age
This video was helpful. The only thing I'd do different is emphasize the fact that the sticks go in one way and one way only, and to take careful note of how the original sticks were positioned. By mistake, I tried inserting the sticks with the notch facing the wrong way. Because the author said some force is necessary, I persevered. Fortunately, I realized my mistake before doing any serious damage (let's hope).
@beaverdc7 the video was filmed two years ago -- $110 for two 2GB sticks of DDR2 ram was normal. In fact, he probably bought it from newegg.com when they were having the special for it. i only remember this detail because i happened to buy the same ram package for my macbook pro around that time
I am about to buy my first Mac, an iMac specifically. And I'm scared of changing from PC. But, your video has put me one step closer to believing I can trust a Mac. Thanks :)
@PreBigBanger i upgraded from a PC and had the same reservations, but after a few months I totally fell in love with my imac and haven't even switched on my old laptop. I hope you upgraded to find the same!
@BOGGLEO yes indeed ! LOVE MAC now. Converting the whole family to MAC. Can't believe all the problems our PC's keep having over and over, and the MAC is problem FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!!!!!!!!
hey erm this is just a basic question really dude, erm my imac is the same as yours but with the 2gb of ram at the moment and its 800mhz and the 4gb moduels i was looking too buy were also 800mhz sticks yet yours are like 657mhz...... is there any reall difference between the two?
@W1LL528 Your mac will only run as fast as it's designed to, so if you put in faster ram, it will still only run as fast as what it's capable. Look for the kind of ram you need. Click on the apple, and on About this Mac. Where it says Memory, is the type of ram you should get. For example, mine says: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, so for me to upgrade my ram, I still need to get 1067 MMz DDR3, whether it's 8 or 64 GB's of ram.
it won't decrease lag...it will just make it so you can run multiple programs so your computer won;t get slow. Upgrade you processor or graphics card if you wan't an intense decrease of lag.
Nice video. I had no problem installing one of the modules into the empty slot, but was struggling with the removal of the existing memory module. I did not know that you could pull on that tab. I thought of doing it, but did not want to mess up my mac in case it was not designed for yanking the tab. Apple missed the part of removing existing memory from their diagram :-)
I have the same mac imac9, and for some reason i need to DOWNGRADE. Is it possible to run my mac with ONLY ONE RAMM STICK that is taking one of 1gb out?
Wow much better! Thanks for posting!

Thanks again for a great, easy video!!

hahahaha only an apple fan would get Megabytes and MHz mixed up :P
Good video though, wasnt quite sure the imac supported full length RAM or not, thanks for clarifying.

Will i lose any thing on my computer if i do what you just did? like pictures, programs, videos...etc?
Ncast530 1 year ago
@Ncast530 - I don't think so - you're adding memory to allow the computer to perform its tasks more efficiently, e.g. cache memory and internal stuff - not removing anything. Also, in the vid, when he turns it on, you can see his twitter account popping up, which would suggest nothing has been removed and still has the same settings. I think.
BOGGLEO 1 year ago
@Ncast530 no you wont lose anything, RAM does not have anything saved on it as it is only temporary memory used for processes like running a programme or gaming etc.
Definately not.

did you put ddr3 or ddr2 in it

I'm happy to see that you can actually upgrade the ram of your imac. I have just bought one online, will receive it next week, and that was one of my main concerns.
thanks for the video!

Hey nice vid but what year is that mac cus my laptop has 4 gb of ram without and upgrade
drpepperPWNER 1 year ago
is it possible to upgrade the ram on an imac or macbook pro, by replacing just one of the ram modules? so one was say 2gb and the other was 1gb? would that work or do you have to replace both to even amounts?
TheEagleZone 1 year ago
Thanks for the help. BTW, obviously I'm watching this vid so I can install memory into my iMac. So what's the point of calling me stupid.
scorpdan 1 year ago
that ram wont make your computer fly really... it will increase the amount of temporary data you can handle which will help it go faster in that sector.
an SSD would make it faster... but I'm not saying to do that necessarily...
Good job, i would like to get 4 gigs in mine some day

that was my favorite part of this video
how old are you, cause right around your age i started getting good with computers and technics, like ipod apps and such, and you apear to be very smart for your age
herbievideo55 1 year ago
This video was helpful. The only thing I'd do different is emphasize the fact that the sticks go in one way and one way only, and to take careful note of how the original sticks were positioned. By mistake, I tried inserting the sticks with the notch facing the wrong way. Because the author said some force is necessary, I persevered. Fortunately, I realized my mistake before doing any serious damage (let's hope).

@beaverdc7 where can you get it for cheaper than that
ayo1 1 year ago
@beaverdc7 the video was filmed two years ago -- $110 for two 2GB sticks of DDR2 ram was normal. In fact, he probably bought it from newegg.com when they were having the special for it. i only remember this detail because i happened to buy the same ram package for my macbook pro around that time

hey erm this is just a basic question really dude, erm my imac is the same as yours but with the 2gb of ram at the moment and its 800mhz and the 4gb moduels i was looking too buy were also 800mhz sticks yet yours are like 657mhz...... is there any reall difference between the two?

Are you really dense as far as using English effectively?
dbeaver317 1 year ago
@dbeaver317 do you have any friends for correcting peoples grammar all the the time, i think not.
W1LL528 1 year ago
@W1LL528 Your mac will only run as fast as it's designed to, so if you put in faster ram, it will still only run as fast as what it's capable. Look for the kind of ram you need. Click on the apple, and on About this Mac. Where it says Memory, is the type of ram you should get. For example, mine says: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, so for me to upgrade my ram, I still need to get 1067 MMz DDR3, whether it's 8 or 64 GB's of ram.

Nice! I'm upgrading mine tonight and I'm a little bit nervous, but I can't wait to actually be able to play computer games without all of the lag.
pulsar4756 1 year ago
it won't decrease lag...it will just make it so you can run multiple programs so your computer won;t get slow.
