I'm 64 now. When I was a little girl my dad would call square dances and my first favorite song was "San Antonio Rose" from which they made a square dance song. Loved it when Tanya came out with this. It's nothing like San Antonio Rose but people who knew it enjoyed this one so very much.
I remember my dad buying me this album for my birthday, played the hell out of it! Dad never bought me too many things, but he did good on this. Thanks for sharing ;)
I'm 79 and grew up in country music! picked guitar for 70 years and a few years backup on live TV...Tanya is as good as it gets! She hits the notes that she goes for and sell the song....just right. The good counrtry id less than 2 1/2 minutes because a persons attention span is usually 3 minutes or less. The kids with the green and orange hair who stand on top of the stage monitors and belt out the same line....over and over for 4 minutes dont have a chance against the old timers.
Great song but this isn't the original 1975 version. She re-recorded the vocal tracks on some of her greatest hits for some reason that is unknown to me.
Next year I am going to try doing a singing call at a square dance. It has been on my bucket list of things to do for years. Well this is my favorite singing call for square dancing. I haven't tried singing it since I was 13 and I am not 48. I sure hope I can do it justice.
The song is from the Album self titled Tanya Tucker from 1975 which is correct, however this actual recording playing here is slightly different/ Tanya's accentuation on certain words, music is also a bit different than the actual recording from the album back then, I have still the cassette from 1975. Nice tune though, thanks for posting it.
I like the original recording better. I'm not sure why she re-recorded vocal tracks of some of her greatest hits (with the original background music) for her later greatest hits albums. Either way, I love me some Tanya!
Remember the Sea World San Antonio attack by one of the killer whales? Then remember the follow-up attack at Orlando in which the whale killed a Sea World Trainer. Stay tuned, killer whale fans. And Remember the Alamo! where even Davy Crockett got killed. Just like reptile zoo owner Steve Irwin got killed by a stingray -- the Crocodile Hunter forgot to remember that even Davy Crocketts get killed when they wear coonskin caps.
Ah, such wonderful memories of this song -- doing the San Antonio Stroll line dance with Cookie at The Townhouse in St Paul!! Thank you for the wonderful times, Cookie!!
My dad used to let me dance with him to this when I was a little girl. He would put my little feet on top of his boots, Those memories are alwasy wtih me. Amazing how hearing a song from my childhood can make u either smile or cry. Sometimes both. All my memories as a kid are of listening to her or willie nelson and being with my dad.
My Daddy and I used to round dance to this song. I might have been all of 8 or 9. He started out having me dance ON his feet, then on my own. That is SUCH a special memory for me!
Einstejn, thanx for posting this. I've always liked this song (I was only 7 when this came out), and for some reason it just happened to be running through my head just now and just had to get on here and see if I could find it, and lo, here it is!
Great song. I thought it was earlier than 1975 because I went to the University of Texas 1969-73 and I thought I heard it on KVET. Maybe I did when I came back to visit in 1979. Beautiful girl singing it as well.
my family has a house in montreat nc. there are "square dances" there every friday night during the summers. san antonio stroll is one of my favorite novelty dances my sister and i always do it together! :)
You might try listening to Jimmie Rodgers (not the guy who was popular in the '50s and recorded "Honeycomb and "Kisses Sweeter than Wine". I mean the guy who was known as "the Singing Brakeman" and recorded back in the '20s and early '30s.).
@xHOLYROLLERx See... people criticize me for that -.- im HUGE on death/heavy/black metal (mainly old stuff when it was fun)... especially Thrash (when it was good in the 80's as the other genres :P)... and people bitch at me because im some kind of poser for not liking only THAT type of genre... they need to go fuck them selves sometimes -0-
@xHOLYROLLERx I love all good music from Tanya Tucker to Godsmack and avenge 7fold and Disturbed to Catholic & Christian music. :) It takes all kinds my friend :)
OMG THANK YOU for posting this i am 46 years young and used to go to the local skating rink , they always played this song at the end of the night, everybody stayed to hear it.
