@pterodactilo Controversial content aside, everything you watch on TV and in the cinema pretty much owes itself to the editing and cinematography practices that Griffith and others helped to pioneer in films like this. You should remember that every time you see a tracking shot or a close-up, Griffith near enough invented those techniques. It may be "boring as hell", but it's one of the most important films ever made.
He didn't invent the close-up. He didn't invent too much actually. Rather he popularised these techniques and gave them meaning as they were used before but not how he used them, just to clarify.
Excellent film that is still relevant today, sadly. D.W. Griffith painted a chillingly accurate potrayal of African American behavior in a post Civil War United States. If only we'd listened to this brilliant film then, our nation wouldn't be in such dire times as it is now. Considering how the Obama administration has been, Griffith's The Birth of a Nation seems in many ways like a prophecy or documentary rather than action adventure (as many thought of it as at the time).

It is in many ways similar to Midnight Express from 1978, where every Turk in that movie is evil.

The director, Griffith, was stung by the heavy criticisms that his film was racist in its glorification of the Ku Klux Klan and its brutal images of African Americans. So he tried to make amends in Intolerance (1916) which criticized prejudice. And in Broken Blossoms (1919) he told perhaps the first interracial love story in the movies, between a white woman and a Chinese man. Even though, just to be sure, it's an idealized love with no touching.

@pterodactilo Controversial content aside, everything you watch on TV and in the cinema pretty much owes itself to the editing and cinematography practices that Griffith and others helped to pioneer in films like this. You should remember that every time you see a tracking shot or a close-up, Griffith near enough invented those techniques. It may be "boring as hell", but it's one of the most important films ever made.

Excellent film that is still relevant today, sadly. D.W. Griffith painted a chillingly accurate potrayal of African American behavior in a post Civil War United States. If only we'd listened to this brilliant film then, our nation wouldn't be in such dire times as it is now. Considering how the Obama administration has been, Griffith's The Birth of a Nation seems in many ways like a prophecy or documentary rather than action adventure (as many thought of it as at the time).

It's a phenomenal piece of art whose content should be viewed from the time in wich it was created. Blacks weren't accepted simply because they were freed. And it took them a lot of time to where they are now. Nonetheless a typical example of propaganda and a must see for every movie lover.

One has only to view the evidence of how from 1992 to 1994... two years. In that short two year period young black men murdered more young black men across America & her inner cities then the KKK had had lynched or otherwise murdered in ten years. I enjoyed the movie. I think that we need a large klan presence today. What is wrong with defending white/European Americans. The klan saw (way back then) what was going to happen to our country and where we were headed. More southerners should of joined and embraced the klan. I liked the heroic ending excellent movie.

I can't say no. i can't say yes. i think he's take on the klan or segregation merely is a sign of the times he was in. i have great respect for his directoral skills though.
