there is a wonderfully powerful guitar riff at the end that's missing here. after all the vocals are done Jerry's guitar riff just rises up and powers through the last minute of the song. it'll will give you goosebumps listening to it. This riff is where Jerry transforms the song into something so much better than Dylan's version. Even though Dylan's version was a masterpeice, Jerry can't help but blow it away.
Talk about leaning back, sipping on whatever you want - whiskey, scotch, soda, water - and just loving what this man and band gave to us. we are the recipients of a great great gift. Thank you Jerry.
What a treat to hear Jerry again - he'll NEVER be forgotten - EVER!! I miss you, Jerry. You could ALWAYS bring a smile to this face of mine. RIP, my friend.
I just love the eerie sound of a day come and gone once upon a time. Very, very cool. I suspect people will watch this in 100 years with awe and wonderment of what things must have been like in 1980. I do not expect this to ever be forgotten.
Too slow, far too slow. No need for covers of Bob Dylan. I play in bathroom to washing machine, It's all the audicence I need. (Even if washing machine gets broken!)
He covers this Dylan song so well, he really makes it his own as he does on so many others too....It is one of my favorites... it is so hauntingly soulful...
I was fortunate enough to be on Jerry tour at this time. This was truly electric Jerry at his best. As Hunter said, it was a stripped-down, bare bones JGB-No background vocalist, etc.(He opened and during the late show was brought out to do Tiger Rose and Promontory Rider :) Ozzie Ahlers, the keyboardist on this tour, forced Jerry to really think about his playing. Ahler's and Jerry could be seen battling back and forth thu solos. Ahler's was not asked back. I always wonderd why?
@limbositter Didn't jery pick up Melvin Seals the keyboard dude after this? So I don't think it was a rebuke of Ahlers but rather Jerry reaaly clicked with Melvin and decided to stay that course. It seemed to me that Jerry's vocals became more manageable with the stuff he did with the Garcia Band as he grew older and his voice became deeper with less range. I loved his voice in the 70's with the Dead but after the 82ish, I only loved his voice with the Garcia Band.
@sweeenoo Lol, the only way you could make this statement was for lack of being there.....What about the Warfield in the '90's?? If you missed everything past the early '80's, you really cant comment. I agree that JGB shows from 76-80 were epic.....so were JGB shows through the 9s, only glitch being when Kemper was fired which changed the vibe for a bit. Garcia changed as he aged, shows with the GD were not close to the purity with which he played JGB gigs from '90 on.
zer000, u hit it on the head my man... jerry was just a simple twist of fate put here to give us strangers a chance to find a common love and forever cherish it as a whole. jerry was a man beyond words..
This show was on my 14th birthday, and I was only a few miles away at the time. I would have gone, but I wasn't a fan yet. My parents should have made me go even if I didn't want to, and told me that I would understand when I grew up.
Lovely version of this song. Jerry is my favorite Dylan cover artist.
@zer000rez Thanks zer00orez. In 1995 when I heard Jerry had passed away, I said to myself "If Jerry can die, I can pull a felony." I did. I got caught by my father who gave me a one way ticket to Santa cruz, Ca. where I did chiva for the 1st time. The last concert with Jerry i saw was Shoreline Ampitheatre, Mountainview, Ca. He died after his next concert at Soldiers Field which is appropriate because Jerry was a trooper! RIP Jerry and thanks again zer000

we were at this show but i cannot remember if it was at this show they showed superman movie's between the early and late show and believe me they were some weird superman movies.but as usual garcia lit up the passaic skies that nite, even though it was a nasty little town.and the security was the absolute worst i have ever witnessed these dudes were freaking evil.
I'm a huge Dylan fan...maybe more then Jerry...they're both my top two but Jerry kills this song...I have worn out my recording of this song...it's always been one of my favorites
If this rendition doesn't break your heart, perhaps youv'e no heart to break.
