It was commissioned by the guys who made Voltron out of GoLion and Dairugger. They paid Toei to make a crossover movie of the Voltron series, so it was made in Japan, but for US audiences, and it has nothing to do with either Dairugger or GoLion.
I know in Japan both Lion Voltron and Vehicle Voltron are two seperate shows with no connections. But in america the combined both series toegther, so where does the film Fleet of Doom fit in?
The two series were combined to meet the number of episode requirements required by the networks. (65 episodes was the minimum amount of episodes to meet the kids programing). The fleet of doom was made using various footage to tie the two series edited together to try and tie the two differnt series together.
So do I! Personally I could never decide which one I liked better. So I like them both. But as you and I both know, most American fans are strictly Lion Voltron fans. But just for the record, I think they're both awesome.

Aye, I have Voltron: Defenders of the Universe on DVD and the collection I have are where they are using the Lions as part of Voltron, so I am not sure if it is only season 1 or seasons 1 and 2 together.
Actually Lion Voltron/Beast King Go-Lion first aired on March 4, 1981 while Vehicle Voltron/Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV first aired on March 3, 1982.
I remember when it aired here in Michigan; the story went that Lion Voltron came first and Vehicle Voltron was the next generation with the previous series' kids.

I had this toy to. The plastic clip that held the hands together broke off when I pressed the "fire" button to release the hands. It was a late run toy whit poor quality made plastic.

When i was younger (16) i bought Both Lions & the Vehicles b'cause i thought they were the coolest thing of the 80's great vid my friend. Brings back a lot of memories.
i liked both voltrons, but i guess they were apples and oranges in a way. if you like cars as a kid you were more into the vehicle voltron. if you were a nature boy you prolly liked the lions better.
The reason they had cars is when they would try to exsplore other areas the five members of the land team would unite thier vechiles together to form a special machine to exsplore the surface of a new planet while the sea team and air team would unite their groups to form vehicles that would help them exsplore from underwater and in the air.
I prefer THIS Voltron over the lions. The robeasts were more ro than beast, and the bad guys were not really bad, they were more like protecting their territories. Plus most of the lion episodes were boring. :P
Well acroding to what i have found out is the one made of the five lions was temporarly brought back to earth in order for the others to get the way to make the other one from the fifteen vehicles. Then the only other time you see the two togetehr is in that "Fleet of Doom" special where both of them must work together to beat the joined froces of the Viceroy of the Drule empire and King Zarkon.
if you go back to the original source you will find that the vehicle voltron is the original version, and the lion version is the third incarnation of voltron.
there were 15 pieces, 3 teams, 5 vehicles to each team, land, air and sea team, they could each form a sort of 5 peice larger vehicle. I think there was an episode where someone was missing and they formed the robot without an arm or something, needless to say voltron got his ass kicked for a while and then the missing vehicle miraculously showed up they reformed and the rest is history...
they need all those cars, ships, submarines and all that shit. then some good day one of the pilotes comes and caches a funking cold so they are screwed no voltron and i thinck i was like 15 of them

lol, they made a pun of voltron phrase on winx club when the super-sentai-like guys appeared, they where a mix of power rangers and the bird ones that i cant even remember their names, the last member of the team was a robot and the girl trow all parts to the sky and the guy joined all his parts together saying in the end "and i'll form the head" oh i loled soo hard and i like this voltron better, also they looked more like panthers, so "lion"s? i dont think so

The only 1 of the "LIONS VOLTRON" that even looks like a Lion is the Black cat(Main body & Head) because of its BUILD,Black lion is lot bigger and more-->STOCKYthan the other 4 cats-U are right about the other 4 looking more like PANTHERS-(or COUGARS,both cats have same body build, They just colored differently)

I saw Vehicle Voltron first as well and have always preferred that one. Strange for some reason because it looks like the Lion Voltron was actually the first season and Vehicle was teh second.

It was commissioned by the guys who made Voltron out of GoLion and Dairugger. They paid Toei to make a crossover movie of the Voltron series, so it was made in Japan, but for US audiences, and it has nothing to do with either Dairugger or GoLion.

I know in Japan both Lion Voltron and Vehicle Voltron are two seperate shows with no connections. But in america the combined both series toegther, so where does the film Fleet of Doom fit in?

The two series were combined to meet the number of episode requirements required by the networks. (65 episodes was the minimum amount of episodes to meet the kids programing). The fleet of doom was made using various footage to tie the two series edited together to try and tie the two differnt series together.

The Lion Voltron is the "more iconic" version of Voltron, meaning it is the one that most Americans think of when they think of Voltron.
Lion Voltron was more "fantasy"-oriented, whereas Vehicle Voltron was more "technologically"-oriented.
I personally like them BOTH.

Though I loved the Lion Voltron more, who didn't. I still liked the Vehicle Force Voltron too, more now, than when it use to come out. I loved it when they teamed up in that fleet of doom episode, the (2) Voltron Forces, you can't beat that.

They did release toys (I had one as a kid). According to the official site, they scrapped plans to release "Gladiator Voltron" due to the poor reception of Vehicle Voltron and just continued to run with the Lions.

Define ORINGINAL-If you can still find BOTH VOLTRON 1 and II DELUXE BOXES on EBAY,you will see that on those boxes,VOLTRON 2 is the LION VOLTRON,so it is not the first Voltron many people mistake it to be-Just as there can only be 1 VOLTRON 3 GLADIATOR ROBOT(look on YouTube-ALBEGAS VOLTRON) that didnt sell too well.

Aye, I have Voltron: Defenders of the Universe on DVD and the collection I have are where they are using the Lions as part of Voltron, so I am not sure if it is only season 1 or seasons 1 and 2 together.

Actually Lion Voltron/Beast King Go-Lion first aired on March 4, 1981 while Vehicle Voltron/Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV first aired on March 3, 1982.
I remember when it aired here in Michigan; the story went that Lion Voltron came first and Vehicle Voltron was the next generation with the previous series' kids.

1 of main reasons why people liked the 5 robot lions is because its DESIGN WAS SIMPLE(If you want NOSTALIA CLASSIC-LION VOLTRON will always be chosen). But if you enjoy a puzzle challenge more complex? Then that 15VEHICLE VOLTRON is top choice

I was a kid. I didn't even know they had a vehicle voltron cartoon. Seeing it now I still think it's better than alot of kid cartoons today. But anyways..

I had this toy to. The plastic clip that held the hands together broke off when I pressed the "fire" button to release the hands. It was a late run toy whit poor quality made plastic.

The reason they had cars is when they would try to exsplore other areas the five members of the land team would unite thier vechiles together to form a special machine to exsplore the surface of a new planet while the sea team and air team would unite their groups to form vehicles that would help them exsplore from underwater and in the air.

Well acroding to what i have found out is the one made of the five lions was temporarly brought back to earth in order for the others to get the way to make the other one from the fifteen vehicles. Then the only other time you see the two togetehr is in that "Fleet of Doom" special where both of them must work together to beat the joined froces of the Viceroy of the Drule empire and King Zarkon.

there were 15 pieces, 3 teams, 5 vehicles to each team, land, air and sea team, they could each form a sort of 5 peice larger vehicle. I think there was an episode where someone was missing and they formed the robot without an arm or something, needless to say voltron got his ass kicked for a while and then the missing vehicle miraculously showed up they reformed and the rest is history...
