As to the real intentions of JPI, a good start is reading 'Murder in the Vatican' by Lucien Grigoire. There are other soucres, but this is the most thorough, as it cites his family & close friends & associates.

When John Paul I was elected, I was truly overjoyed. He was a very great man. This quality was visible immediately; he communicated his holiness and special loving qualities so very effectively. His loss has impacted me very deeply -- even after all these years. The church needs to give more recognition to him.
