All the great ballet artists from Balancine to Nureyev to Baryshnikov have said the same thing: that Fred Astaire is the greatest dancer in the world. I prefer Bryshnikov's line best of all: " Fred Astaire is a dancer. The rest of us are doing something else."
I despise these overproduced things from the 1950s. Christ, just have this guy dance and let the cameras roll. No need for editing! No need for this lard-laiden music. Bigger is not always better.
The consummate professional. There are two different shoots of this scene. In the original, Fred was wearing much more threadbare and 'common' clothes. The studio heads, however, decided that that wasn't good enough, and so quite a while later, the entire scene was re-shot. The amazing thing, though, is that discounting camera placement, and of course the clothing, the two scenes are identical, down to the last step and gesture. Incredible dancer, actor, artist and genius.
Astaire alone on stage in a spotlight, traditional sand dance, no special effects, no partner, and a song that truly fits his real life accomplishments. What a perfect epitaph to the brilliant career of the classiest "dancin' man" the world has ever seen.Thank god we'll always have your wonderful performances on film, Fred

This is a fabulous dance. It's too bad you had to cut it. I love the combination of the interview clip and the dance thought.
