  • music from an age of refined melodic classics

  • it's so sad:(

  • matt johnson's hair!!!

  • Mara!

  • how good are the the :-)

  • I never knew Matt Johnson had that much hair. The iconic Mind Bomb cover is a real contrast to this

  • Life is continually changing for me,never a dull moment.

  • memory lane: heard this for the first time in a disco in san miguel de allende, mexico, sept 87...man, perfect song.

Makes you think about your life, and what you can do to make it better.

    Thank you The The...

  • Any band that can add an accordian and write such open tunes has to rate as one of the best! :) Viva La The The

  • Thanks for posting this great song!

  • i love this song!

  • ''the best of THE THE ''

  • This song always reminds me the end of that wonderful movie called "Empire Records", beautiful.

  • Look's like the video was filmed around about Hastings area back in the good old day's.

The pier is the old hastings pier as it was in the 80's.The room he is in with the red carpet is the old resturant upstairs in the White Rock Theatre.some other shots are around Bexhill area west of Hastings.

  • For those that the comment below made no sense, that's because I thought I was on "share ~ Email", LOL.

  • Jumping way ahead...I remember hearing this on our wedding day. Mip and I had been living together for 6 years, so we told the family, but eloped from our friends! We were the beau ideals for "how living together could actually work"...some had there whole idea of how they thought the universe worked explode. There was a lot of acid around in those days, LOL.

  • I think it's a great story!

I've always loved this song. It's really nostalgic for me as well, since I lived in Europe when it came out and listened to it constantly. The background looks like Brighton, England (hope I'm right-it MUST be), a place I went with my friends a lot. Makes me very wistful...

  • Oh, I'm quite certain it is. I've not been to Brighton, but I do feel like I've been, just because of films, and being an Anglo-phile. Intended to get down there, but had to nix it. I don't know any other place that looks like that. It's not Blackpool. You never see that obvious dead straight on pier shot, but it seems to be like everywhere else around it, and under it, looks like the Royal Pavilion is used...I'm envious you had time with friends in Brighton...I suddenly have desire for eel pie!

  • For all those who are arguing about this song and the tv comercial M&M's:

I agree with both, some say that great music shouldn't be used for commercials for selling products and I understand. But I'm more into the side of liking this on commercials. This makes lots of people from new generation to listen to good music and say "is this song from a new band?" and when they find out they'll be like "wow I'm starting to like 80's music now, thanks to the commercial!"

  • THANK U JOJO

  • brighton!!<3

  • this is a cool song. takes me way back love it

  • They sound like and look like a cross between Bowie/Psychedelic Furs/The Cars...

  • stunning song, great vid, 1st time see for me, ta

  • great songs shouldn't be picked like cadavers in TV commercials. Hands off great music!

  • THANK YOU!!!!

  • holds your life together like glu-eeew-ue...

  • M&M's ? I never seen this commercial and I'm happy about that. I Very Very Very like what Matt Johnson did.

  • the mm's music

    just kidding

    beauiful song

  • my favorite song, great song,

  • This is Beautiful

  • It's a beautiful song regardless of who's using it in their commercial.

  • I first listened to this song in the movie 'Empire Records' years ago. Now it's back and I hate when people sing it, but don't know what it's from, or who the band is.

  • It is just because people associate this song with better times and the m&m's company doesn't do it justice.

I tend to agree, but I like hearing the song either way.

Speaking of which, I'm off to the store.

Going to go get me..... some m&m's.. =D

  • hey what is wrong with m&m's? i mean if this song was used for a chemical waste company or worse wal*mart then maybe i could see you getting pissed, but m&m's?

  • I heard this song on the M&Ms commercial, too cool!!!

  • Perfect song!

  • Why this it make you sad that they're using matt johnson's song to sell a product? If he approved of this and he's making money off of it, he's bascially being paid for his creativity that allowed him to write this song some 20 yrs ago. Now younger kids who watch this commercial and say to themselves what a great song, I wonder who's the artist. That's exposure to the current generation too. So easy for you to say, you're not the artist.

  • dude, drop it.

I'm not interested in continuing this stupid thread anymore. If an artist wants to soil their music by associating it with some stupid consumer product, then fine, whatever. I'm just voicing my opinion. Thats what YOU TUBE is all about.

    Happy New Year, buddy.

  • This is not a stupid thread, it's a very interesting debate and I enjoy exchanging perspectives with you bud. I think hardcore fans tend to have this "anti-establishment elitist" attitude toward their favorite artists and songs and they feel territorial about them and I can understand that but I feel that is very selfish. Some of these bands and artists are sometimes one-hit wonders and it's their chance to make money which their scammy contract didn't allow them to back then.

  • ok, no prob. Sorry to bark. Not my style. I just hate seeing such incredibly good music associated with consumer goods. I LOVE Blondie's "One way or another"...one of the best songs ever written, but it has been used to see everything from makeup to soda, and thats what I think of now when I hear This song...M&M's. I just think The The's fans would rather have some new music, I know I would. Something fresh (unlike "Hanky Panky", which, IMO, never should have been recorded.)

  • This "selling out" bs is getting so old man. Artists make music to make money and gain fame. If they're fortunate enough to create something classic with wide appeal and people want to pay them money to use it. they all power to the artist! That doesn't make the song less or more than what it already is.

  • um, yeah it does. How many products has Blondie's "One Way or Another" been used to sell? Sorry, man, but I'm old - I've seen the likes of The The, Ramones, Blondie, even frikkin DEVO now used to sell consumer crap. Phones and soda and makeup and M&M's...why you so mean? I didnt say I didnt like this song, I am the HUGEST The The fan on this planet...This just makes me sad.

  • whatever, man. just my opinion. I'm a puritst. Jingles sell products, not classis rock and roll song. I just think its wrong. Again, its just my OPINION. Didnt say I was right or wrong, just expressing what I think. Would love to see what MATT has to say about this...read the other comments. I'm not the only one that feels this way.

  • Hey, I'm glad to see this and other lost 80's classics find new life in commercials - maybe Matt Johnson will find new fans (and much-deserved cash) for it.

  • hahahahahahahhahahahahhaha

no offense or anything but that video is groovy!!!

i think my mom used to listen to that song cuz she was a young adult in the 80s. but now she likes R&B

  • thanks for posting :D love this song, first heard from m&m's commercial

  • I ashamedly confess to hearing thos song only from the M&M commercials, not recalling it from my youth in the 80's. These ads hide the song's sadder message.

But great to see its video, which is very well-made, with some excellent footage (of England?).

    Thanks for posting!

  • This song has been nearly ruined by its appearance in US adverts~

  • and hasnt been ruined...its actually more popular and new people are hearing it

  • forgot to add...im one of those new people :P and id like to buy this CD

  • I totally agree Raquel. I love this song, but all I can think of now when I hear it is M&M's. I have every single THE THE release (and a shitload of bootlegs - unreleased and rare stuff-demos). I just think Matt should release a new album. All alone, like he used to back in the 80's. no band - just him.

  • Thanks for the support!

I love The The a.k.a Matt Johnson. Last saw them/him at the Warfield in San Francisco in 1989!

  • Anytime Raquel. I have been a The The fan, well, since "Burning Blue Soul" (aka Matt Johnson). I think my favorite The The period was the "Infected" years...That whole album is brilliant, especially "Sweet Bird of Truth" - "This is your captain calling...with an urgent warning...". LOVE IT. But my favorite The The song is "Uncertain Smile." Have seen him/them several times.
