Don, i've seen many of your mesa videos... but i have noticed that both amps sound different because of the EQ you should do an A/B test with similiar EQ settings... you know both amps flat, scooped, etc...
@themodernguitarist I am a proud owner of a Roadster and I gotta say, this demo does not do it justice. It is an incredible amp but I think it wasn't really dialed in right in this video.
You gotta do a Roadster vs Mark V, I took back an entire Roadster rig because I was unsure about it because I didn't get to try a Mark V. I'd love to here them in this setting. But dude, crank them up. \m/
Hi Don, fantastic playing BTW. Are the EL-34 Mesa Tubes the best you can replace the 6L6 tubes that come stock in the Roadster? I realize the only TRUE way to get the Marshall "Roar" or sound is to just go out & get a Marshall but on Channel Two and some say Ch.3 what settings would you start with to get as close to The Marshall Tone as you can?
@luiza177music No pedals were used. The dual and triple were revoiced in 2010, so if your amp was made before that it could be a factor. Also tubes can cause issues with tightness. When was the last time you re-tubed?
Which amp would you recommend for lead work (ala vai, satch, petrucci)? From this video it seems the Dual Rectifier has more top end than the Roadster. I also want something that takes effect pedals really well too.
@rattlehead001 The roadster is basically a dual rectifier with the addition of one more channel, and all the channels are voiced differently from each other, where as the rectifier's 2 & 3 channels are exact clones of each other. So the roadster has more options, but is also $300 more expensive.
i also know that john petrucci uses the mesa boogie mark V, which is about the same price, so you might consider that amp as well.
@rattlehead001 for lead work Mark V. I bought the Mark V first and the switch it for a roadster. The Mark V is a tight head with lots of settings. I just think the roadster is more aggressive. But if you're a lead guitarist Mark V is the way to go !
Nice comparison. The roadster has less of that recto sizzle on the top end and the notes have a different quality when palm muting. More "sticky" ;). The darker top end on the Roadster can be desirable but sometimes you need that extra clarity of the Dual.
The major advantage of the Roadster is the series fx loop. IMO that's more important than the tonal differences between the two amps.
@47Wolfgang Rob, your guitar is turning out awesome! I have the frets pulled and the neck leveled, sanded and re-oiled. It looks great! Your stainless steel frets should be here any day! :-)
@haggertysmusic Also, I now see how right I was in my choice to go with the roadster, it appears that the Dual Rec is a bit more "crunchy" compared to the smoothness of the roadster. More to my taste. Thanks again, Don!
@Derrick7777777 I'd say so. Keep in mind we had the EQ's relatively flat. You can always dial in more or less bottom depending on your guitar and style.
@haggertysmusic I asked if you guys would do this video a couple months back, to my surprise, it's been done. thanks! :3 I have the roadster, I just wanted to see how the regular Dual Rec sounded in comparison. Nice to hear some kansas played in this vid!
@ElectricTurkey1 I obviously have to disagree, because I heard the amp in the room and the recording is very accurate. It was mic'ed with a Royer R-121... so it doesn't get much more transparent than that. If your roadster sounds considerably different, please keep in mind the guitar your using, the amp settings, speaker cabinet etc... not to mention the speakers you are listening to youtube on, which may color the sound in undesirable ways.

Zhorellski 4 months ago
How does the Roadster compare to older 3ch rectos? It seems that 3 & 4 on the Roadster sound a lot like 2 & 3 on my Recto, which is a pre-2010 model.
jdoorn01 4 months ago
Are you using a booster with the amps? The Recto sounds way tighter than mine...

Great stuff. I wish Mesa made a 212 combo for the regular D. Rectifier. Oh well... the Roadster combo is just great too.
pearljaime2 5 months ago
It might just be the micing, but i think the roadster has more clarity, and smoother saturation.
SomeYoungGuy1993 5 months ago
@SomeYoungGuy1993 No, that's just the roadster. It has always been a bit smoother/darker and with a cleaner treble response.
