  • This is great. I live in Scotland and I'm part of a "hat team" for a competition. This will be great for our "Sewn Hat" category. Then *I'll* wear the hat with pride. :-)

  • @1956june23 That's awesome! Let me know how the competition turns out! :)

  • Hey, do you have a vid on how to do a Driving cap (aka scally, scully, golf, or flat cap)?

  • @hellerZauberer No, I don't have a driving cap tutorial at this time...maybe sometime...

  • Thank you so much for sharing your tutorial and pattern even though you make these to sell. Very generous! I'm making one right now as a late Christmas gift for a friend. I'm a beginner at sewing and can't wait to see her face when I give it to her!

  • @MyWillis21 That's awesome! I'm sure your friend will love it! :)

  • Thank you soo much for this pattern and tutorial, I"ve been struggling trying to make my own

  • love the hat will probably try and make it since it can be custom made as most hats don't fit.

  • Awww I like your pins! Where did you get them?

  • @thedaughtersofsarah They are from JoAnns

  • HA! aglanceatmyworld i could kiss ya lol ive been looking for the pattern to make one of thses for a while lol

  • @ErixtheRed1990 I'm so glad that you found what you need! Can't wait to hear how your hat turns out :)

  • Love this! I made one in fleece, a beautiful 'groovy' 60-70's vibe. I have been looking for a pattern for a while. This one is fabulous. Thanks for the pattern and this awesome tutorial. I'm a subbie!

  • @SParkApCider That's awesome! I had a groovy newsboy hat back in the late 90s that I loved so much...wonder where that is now...

  • Wow! thank you!!

  • Any tips on how to rescale it for a baby size??.

  • I like the tutorial thanks.

  • I am going to make this but was wondering how much fabric I will need of each? Thanks!

  • @cheftobe333 I can't remember off the top of my head...but I think it was about 1/4 a yard. If you're going out and buying fabric I would get 1/3 a yard just to be safe :)

  • @aglanceatmyworld Thanks!

  • Thank you so much for this tutorial - I made one!! It's a little rough, but it fits (after a bit of alteration for my small head!!) and it looks cute!! Thank you so much again - can't wait to try another one... maybe for my mom!! haha! <3

  • Wow. I love this hat, and you make it look so easy! I have to make one for myself. :)

  • That is so smart. It looks so professional and like you would see it in any store. Can I ask what kind of material you recommend for the outer layer material? I'm extremely new to sewing and really don't know where to start when it comes to materials.

  • you're so hot...

  • YOU ARE AWESOME! You make it look so easy! I'm def going to try to make this! Thanks for sharing this video! I'll let you know how it turns out! :-))

  • @janc458 Thank you! I'm so glad you like the tutorial :) Can't wait to hear how your's turns out!

  • I love the hat. Where do you get those cute pins?

  • @afos32 I got them at JoAnns :)

  • i love it! I think I'll try making it this upcoming week. Thank you!

  • I love hats but I can't ever find one that fits me right. I am so excited to try this tutorial so I can have a hat that fits me. Plus I love how you added the broches' to make it sparkle. Thanks! Great JOB!!!

  • awesome. It is so funny that I just made a paper boy hat today. I had made one years ago and I loved it and that's how I got into hats. my pattern pieces that I made are quite similar. I'm a big hat fan so I'm going to try this one out also.Great job, great commentary.

  • great video

  • what type of interfacing do i use, the kind u sew into or the sticky kind O_O (i'm new to that). I also saw it on the hobbylobby website with the kinds of interfacing they have and they have a lot, so please tell me which one I should use, because i really want to make this hat :3

  • @CollidingSparks You need the sticky kind which is called iron-on interfacing. A medium weight one will work. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions :)

  • @aglanceatmyworld that helps alot thank you

  • Hi Whitney ^n^/ found you out from Corrine (I'm her fan) I'm really excited to follow you too. Peace

  • I made one of these last week and I freakin love it! Thanks Whitney!!!

  • @billkaulitzluvagirl Awesome! If you're on facebook you should post a pic to the Whitney Sews page because I would love to see it :)

  • Oh, I forgot to mention, my hat turned out great for my first one! My Mom and Dad loved it too!

  • @JaimseyGirl That's great! Glad you liked the tutorial :)

  • I consider myself about intermediate at sewing, and I found this project really easy, quick, and fun to do! It took me just over an hour to do, including cutting pieces. It would have taken less time, but I had to share my ironing board....Anyway, thanks SOOO much, Miss Whitney, you are amazing!

  • i made another one today it turned out really cool i used alternating colors and used fake fur for the outer 24 inch strip it looks awsome n fits perfect this time!!!! thanks soo much

  • @sewmommysew That sounds really cool! One thing I used to do was alternate the 'right' and 'wrong' sides of the fabric. It gave the panals contrasting colors but still coordinated.

  • woo ho i made this for me and it looks great! BUT its WAY to big lol so how do u think i could make ot fit better cause its huge lol

  • @sewmommysew Awesome! Take just a slightly larger seam allowance when sewing the six pieces together and then a larger seam allowance on the band (depending on how much smaller the hat needs to be) and that should make it fit. My head is smaller then average so that is what I always have to do to make my hats fit. (You can't tell in the photo, but I had the hat clipped in the back to fit).

  • Comment removed

  • @sewmommysew Yeah, I would sew two darts near the back...I had to do it to one once.

  • Whitney is amazing!

  • i LOVE this tutorial!!!! i always wanted a hat! :( but never got a chance to buy one...

but thanks to this tutorial, i can make myself one! yay!! :D

  • @UntoldDarkness66 I'm so glad you liked the tutorial! Let me know how your hat turns out :)

  • on a scale of 1-10 how hard is this to make?

  • @amberlbrowning Depends on who's scale. I consider this to be a pretty easy project, but it may feel much harder to a newer/less experienced sewer.

  • @aglanceatmyworld I make lots of dresses 4 my daughter ...Im pretty sure I can make the hat I was most worried about how hard the bill of the hat would be...Thanks so much 4 sharing!

  • @ChannonRose Hehe yep...figured enough people had requested so I should finally do the tutorial on it. Hope you liked it! :)

  • wow..that's a lot of work...nice job:)

  • @demoulpieds Thanks :)

  • hey you are wearing the embellished tank top. looks good.

  • @NOneLikeCharice Heh yep :) Thanks!

  • i loved this video. thanks for sharing.

  • @eastsaintlouis62203 Thanks! Glad you liked it :)

  • you cut the fabric without tracing the pattern first? ? *gasp* So brave!!! and thanks for the pattern!! Love it!!

  • @mimanda Hehe I live on the edge :) Actually I'm just lazy...

  • Girlfirend, I must admit that your sewing talents have grown exponentially over the time I've been following you here on You Tube. I'm really enjoying the challenging tutorials you are bringing to us and that highlight your ever evolving creative skills. Thanks for sharing. I am sooo looking forward to more. Perhaps a dress from scratch, draping, or pattern drafting tutes.

  • @Sobreya Hehe thanks! My sewing skills are about the same...I've just decided to throw in more challenging tutorials every once in a while. When I first started Whitney Sews I worked 40-50 hours a week so I just did super quick and easy tutorials. I get lots of requests for dresses, but I have no training in draping or pattern making, so it's really difficult for me to come up with a tutorial that can fit (and will look good) on a large variety of sizes and shapes...maybe this summer...

  • @aglanceatmyworld

You caught me before I got a chance to correct my typo. It should have been girlfriend. I couldn't remove it in time. Browser was acting up.

  • @Sobreya Heh it's ok...I didn't even notice it :)

  • so super nice!!! i love it!!!

  • Wow this is super cute and it really makes me want to try and make one, even though it would be a total disaster lol. I have to ask though and I am probably going to sound stupid but it is called a Newsboy hat, is that because of the group? the hat Tait wears? I LOVE Newsboys!!!

  • @CraftsbyKawaiiSaru Hehe that's a really good question, but the hats are nicknamed Newsboy because it's the type of hat the little boys selling newspapers on the corner would wear in the late 19th and early 20th century.

  • Awsome tutorial Whitney!!! I love these NewsBoys hats that rock!! Great to watch you everytime sweety! Yes, Corinnes back and WATCH IT with Face-Time with our host, Whitney! Good job hun!! :) Talented gals & my friends:D oxox Gothictany!

  • @gothictany73 Aww thanks! I love when you comment because you always have something so sweet to say :)

  • LOL you know what funny the pattern was same for me so you know what i did i took my head mes 24 in and divided that number by 6 to get ot and i made my 6 in in height and i already took a brimmed hat to make the pattern for the brimmed lol it wrok for me i made more then 10 lol i guess i have no life :P

  • @sasukechan77 Hehe that's awesome! I made ten of these during the first weekend because I was so excited about it :)

  • I GUESS RIGHT! GO ME!

  • very very nice thanks alot

  • This is super cute! How much fabric did you use?

  • @billkaulitzluvagirl It depends on how wide the fabric is, but I think it was less then 1/3 yard of each.

  • what's interfacing && can I use cotton fabric?

  • @246810hiie Interfacing is a material used to give fabric more structure and stability. If you buy the iron on kind (instead of sew-in) it will have a textured/shiney side. To use you place the texture side down on the 'wrong' side of your fabric and iron according to the interfacing directions.

You can use cotton fabric, but I recommend something a little heavier like a twill fabric.

  • I love this video, I am so going to make me one of these hats, it looks so cute.

  • love the vid! :)

  • I got my pattern for this type of hat from baby hats when I was making photo prop hats for the babies to where . Where did you get yours?

  • @valablu I've studied lots of different hat patterns and styles...then decided on what features I liked and what I thought should be added and created this pattern. I also designed a more fitted hat about 2 years ago.

  • this is awesome!

i love hats but my head is too big, so i never can't found a hat for me..

  • OMG! Thank you, Whitney! I commented last time before even watching the video because I already loved the hat so much!

I really appreciate the support. You rock.

    xoxo c

  • @Craftovision If it wasn't for you I would never have even thought up Whitney Sews...so you have every bit of support from me! :)

  • i've been waiting for this forever!! thanks!! :)

  • You make the hat look easy to make. I know it takes a little more skill and a great sewing machine.Very very cute.

  • @mspatti Hehe thanks :) It's really not that hard though...when I first started making these I made 10 in one weekend. I've probably made close to 50 now :)

  • AWESOME!

  • @Craftovision Thanks!

  • Great !!!...just right for spring and summer =D Thanks Whitney !!

  • Another great episode! So cute!

  • @NovemberBlueTV Thanks! If store bought hats are usually a bit small for you then you'll probably want to cute your pieces slightly larger and make your band 1/2 to 1 inch longer. Let me know how it turns out :)

  • Que buen tuto, muchas gracias!!!/

What a great tutorial, thank you very much!

  • @fieltromania Thanks! Glad you liked it :)

  • OMG CORINNE FROM THREADBANGER IS BACK :D

She is such a funny person, and when she and Rob quitted with Threadbanger I was a bit sad, but now that she is back, we can again enjoy her funnyness XD (maybe Rob comes back too? ^^)

  • @PTuinman Yep! I'm so excited because I love Corinne's projects and style :)

  • so easy, I was thinking that it was much complicated, but well, it is very simple actually xP
