agreed....although this just proves, the umps have made it a midfielders award... hodge was playing down back and still the best player, but they only give votes to who gets the most kicks really, not who is most influential... put hodge in the middle, and he wood win the brownlow hands down

I hate Hawthorn, but the fact that Leigh Matthews could not win a Brownlow shows how redundant the Brownlow medal is. Umpires are too busy adjudicating to actually see everything. They can hardly even do that properly, let alone award votes.

Putting Hodge in the middle guarantees nothing in terms of the Brownlow.
