  • The Music in this video is so fitting I want to know who Ian Hubball is! He has captured the essence so well.

  • Great video Trevor, but sad to say, the ship was a disaster, Sir Barnes Wallis (there

  • The headquarters building was originally just the headquarters of the airship works, the drawing offices on the top floors are where most of Cardington's big airships took shape, when first built it was a military based site, the building is in the admiralty style, anyhow the hole hotel idea was much later and as far as i know was planned but not started due to the 101 going down, so in a way your wrong that it was not actually built as a hotel but also your right as they had plans to add one.

  • I actually read an article about the disaster of the R101 in a book called Hindenburg: and illustrated history, it was the worst airship accident until the crash if the Akron

  • @Davis4037 a very sad fact, sad stories all round really,

  • I live nearby to the Cardington hangers in Elstow and can see them from my house. I regularly travel along that road shown in the film and always think of those poor people killed in the crash. A large memorial stands in Cardington cemetery to those lost. The old HQ building at RAF Cardington still stands but was originally built as a hotel to house passengers in transit for the airships. It is now being converted into flats in conjunction with other housing on the site.

  • Great piece of music BTW, well done. Is it on general release?

  • Great video Trevor, but sad to say, the ship was a disaster, Sir Barnes Wallis (there's a line) told me when he saw it at Cardington, he was appalled.

Have you read 'The Airmen who Refused to Die,?' Not too well written, but certainly food for thought

  • A fascinating insight into a bygone era and the monumental scale of these airships. Living close to the Cardington Hangars as I do, I am always amazed by just how huge they are. People, cars and even huge lorries are dwarfed by them, it must be amazing to look inside.

  • I lost my Great Uncle "Major G.H. Scott" when the R-101 crashed. He was Captain of the famous R-34 Airship. My Grandfather "T.C. Scott" (Canadian Mounted Police Officer B.C.) felt the loss till the day he died. These guys were amazing airmen! There should be more history paid to them.

  • @48alfaone thank you so much for your comment, he was a great man.

are you a member of the AHT? (airship heritage trust) their website is fantastic airshipsonline also i am not sure if you aware that there will be a special 80th anniversary ceremony at Cardington this year.

  • @48alfaone Hi I have written a film script about the R-101 in which Major Scott, your Great Uncle is a main character. I would love to be in touch with you to tell you more about the film and its progress. Lucinda Spurling

  • Was one of the people in the film watching from the ground Roosevelt?

  • @TheJcanno8 No it was not Roosevelt. The personalities on the ground included Lord Thompson; Sir Sefton Brancker; and the chief designer Vincent Richmond. A magnificent looking airship but sadly flawed in both design and operation. The film shows it in both its original form and also the later lengthened version which crashed fatally at Beauvais.

  • @spitfireJEJ thank you for your comments, i hope you liked the video.

  • this is absolutely amazing, the more I see it the more moving I find it. The music fits perfectly with the wonderful footage. Well done you two.

  • @catpower19771 thank you

  • Always saddens me to see the R101 leaving Cardington on that last fateful flight, but see certainly was a marvellous sight a very well edited piece of historical footage

  • @gaz11h thank you

  • please check out my other airship related video clips

  • Quite remarkable.

  • great clips, great music
