  • What's the difference between an octave mandolin and bouzouki, or are they the same? Great playin', by the way!

  • @MandoPlayer100 Same tuning, but the bouzouki is much larger. TR

  • My lord, you are fantastic. So much style.

  • Hey Tony, I got a 55 Desoto hubcap with a pitchfork stuck in it, and I bet you could play the Ashoken Farewell on it. You amaze me young man....Stan Bennett in Michigan. I just threw my Mandolin in the trash can after I watched this:)

  • thanks! inspiring playing!

  • i highly recomend any, one amature or pro to take their instrument to tony for set up,and repair, you will not be dissapointed. tony has a great musical ear,is one of the finest pickers in the land, and he is a true fair dealing buisness man.

  • @snapperjohn1000 I can't play a lick on anything but have been to Tony's shop a couple time with a friend and can attest to his ability with anything with strings on it. A listener like can sit and be entertained royaly in his shop.

  • jeez man, you play the heck outta that.

  • It had a lot of heck in it to start with! Thanks, TR

  • I love the Chet Adkins thing you got going on halfway thru!

  • I just had to watch this again. I still love it.//Phil

  • My fingers get tired just watching this one.//Phil

  • Don't you think it's awful what we put our fingers through just to please our ears? TR

  • Yes. But I would not have it any other way.//Phil

  • Hi Tony! I've only seen the octave mandolin once before, on rhopen-Ron's channel. I think they are great instruments and you played this song like a pro! 5* and then some! I added this to my favorites.

    Gretsch'n

  • Hi Gretsch'n, thank you, I'm glad you liked it--the Trinity college brand (Saga) is a well made, great sounding instrument. I also like the mandola & Irish bouziki. If you ever need anything musical, let me know, I'm a dealer. TR

  • That orange Gibson hanging in the background of some of your other videos sure looks nice! :o)

You could e-mail me some details on that one if you would like. Of course, I'm still paying my green Gretsch off, so it might be awhile before I can afford a Gibson. :o)

    Gretsch'n

  • I think the one you're refering to was a Gretsch 6120 TM--that one sold about a month ago. Unfortunately, I'm not a Gibson or Gretsch dealer, I can locate certain instruments, but I'm a dealer for Goldtone, Saga, Eastman, & a bunch of other brands you've never heard of. I can get any brand of strings, accessories, etc. What do you use on your Gretsch? TR

  • I have heard of Goldtone, do they make banjos?

I use DR electric guitar strings I like the EH 11 or extra heavy 11 gauge. do you have violin stings?

  • Yes, you can see all the banjo models on their website---check them out. For your style of guitar I like Gibson L5 11 to 52 with a wound third string. I have most brands of violin strings, what do you use?

  • I use dominant strings.

  • Go Tony//PP

  • Very fine playing there. -Ron

  • nice spelling on my part too :P

  • multi instrumental talent nice plaiyng :)

  • Very fine performance - you are highly skilful!

  • Great..beautiful.

    Marcelo Maya

  • Very nice, I came across your video looking for an Etta Baker tune and what a nice surprise. Very inspiring to watch you play. I want to learn some bluegrass now.

  • I Like That! Great Pickin'

    Terry

  • Thank you. TR

  • Let's see you get that fancy on a fiddle...

    :-) DH

  • Ouch! You got me!

    TR

  • Show off!

    DH

  • Ain't it just SHAMEFUL?

    TR

  • Great arrangement and great playing! Maybe you want to tab out this out and post it on a web site?

  • Thank you very much. I never play this tune the same way twice, I couldn't tab it out even if you held a gun on me! Sorry, I wish I could.

    Tony

  • Are you using a flat pick and a finger pick on that one? Phil

  • No, just a flat pick & a bare middle finger. TR

  • Whoosh! Pure Carolina Piedmont blues, there. Wonderful playing!

  • I can tell by the look on your face you really enjoy playing that song.Phil

  • It is a lot of fun to play, I actually played the melody a couple of times.

    Tony

  • Loved those finger picking bits you put in there.Phil

  • I'll probably get arrested by the octave mandolin "purists" for that!

  • You make it look so easy.Phil
