While Houle didn't get much to work with from day 1, he also made terrible decisions from day 1 on. But there's one more transaction that is overlooked and may be the biggest fail of them all:
He decided to give Brisebois a no trade clause. He was going to trade Brisebois and Vladimir Malakhov to New Jersey for Sergei Brylin. NJ accepted and Brisebois just had to waive the clause. He refused and the trade was Malakhov to NJ for Sheldon Souray, and we know how Souray turned out.

The Habs had their worst period of their history under Houle, but things didn't really improve after Andre Savard took over. The Gainey era was ok, as they missed the playoff only once from 2003-2010, and I hope now that Pierre Gauthier is going to rebuild the glorious team Montreal had until the early 1990's.

Rejean Houle should come back as a Coach or replace Bob Gainey's role as GM. I don't think Houle had an advantage with what he had to pursue in his time there, from the budget, but now the NHL has a salary cap. Montreal spent about 70 million on trades this year. Honestly, Houle must feel that he was played because of what he had on his plate. He couldn't make big decisions, there had to be a balance,. Management should've been more responsible upon their actions within the course of 94-onward.

LOL. I get it. Rejean Houle = Bush fan. I say that because his trades didn't make any sense, just like how Bush's lyrics don't make sense.
