Amish or not, it's so typical American to use that extra strap to keep a horse's head high. A good trained horse doesn't need that. YOu never see those here and there's lot of horses and carts around here.
that was pretty cool .i grew up arround some amish folks .i actually bought an amish draft horse shes broke to ride and drive .i know how to ride but not to drive really .i wanna learn soo bad now

@Saartje05 Yes I agree, bearing reins are harsh & cruel, I would never dream of using them on my driving horses.
