An exploding right rear caused this in a stretch of 180 mph. After slamming into the wall of what was to be the hardest knock of his career (up to that point) a flying tired knocked him on the helmet. He was blinded for thirty seconds and not sure where he was. Later he would admit that the momentary effect on his eyesight worried him. Nonetheless, he was able to walk away from this one to the cheers of the Tifosi.
you could see ratzenberger was dead after impact. his head was lolling around as the car spun after hitting the wall you could see he was very dead immediately gilles seems alive at first though i don't know if he died instantly or what.
@imnotftw I'm amazed that you think he died here..... With so many videos on YouTube of the late great Gilles' horrific accident, how could you be mistaken? That, plus it's 1980.... plus his arms were waiving..
I can't understand this. This impact looked much worse than Ratzenbergers one but 14 years ealier they got a better camera shot? Why they doesnt have a good one of Ratzenberger
@GetawayMTA worse? LOL!! the car was much slowed down by the spinning..Ratzenberger went flat out head on! The crash speed here could be around 140 kph, Ratzenbergers was 280 kph!
@bourlivak88 no lol Gilles was at 280km/h but after the race when Renè Arnoux returned to Ferrari and not Renault box asked how was Gilles : "I'm happy!" René : "Why you say that?" Gilles : "watch the car. i crashed at 280km/h and i'm alive."
The 1980 Ferrari was such a dog that smashing it into a wall was the best policy. Mercifully he emerged unscathed, unlike poor Ratzenberger 14 years later. After that this corner was slowed down when the approach was reprofiled.
typically Ferrari to not realize ground effect was there to stay, or did they fail to learn from the blistering pace of the Lotus 79 in 1978 and the Williams FW07 in 1979?
1980 was the worst season for Ferrari ever in F1. Think they ended the championship in 11'th place.
Luca di Montezemolo was way better for Ferrari than the old man ever was.
Villeneuve died in practice for the 1982 Belgian GP at Zolder for those of you confused.

@McLarenMercedes
Ferrari finished 10th in 1980, their drivers won a pathetic 8 points between them
Scheckter, the reigning champion, finished the season with just 2 points
an embarrassing year

is this the same place he died ?
even Emerson Fittipaldi consider Gilles Villenueve better than him specially under rainy conditions.
