I tilt the bike over until it drips a little out of the vent hole... I think its a similar principle... Thanks for the tips. I'm surprised you didn't have to get the piston to tdc before it started!
I've seen many different superstitions in my day over starting a big bore, but never this one! So you carry that little hose around with you everywhere you go? I'm not saying it doesn't work, just isn't quite necessary.
@jbsleddin So you have never tried this method, have no clue if it works. I provided a video showing how it works and in your mind it is a superstition?
The hose is used when the engine is cold and difficult to start.
The method shown works quite well on my bikes and if you check the posts, others have found it works for them also.
If you think it is not "necessary", use whatever method you want.
@arizonamotocross Wasn't trying to offend you over this, nor did I mean that it was a superstition. What I meant was that many guys have many different oddball ways of starting their bikes, yet I have just watched your video and figured that the old "tip 'er over til gas spills out and give 'er a couple easy primer kicks" method is the same without carrying a hose around in your back pocket. Sorry if I pissed you off, I have a tendency to do that to some people! LOL
It Works! I tried it first time yesterday, exactly as I was selling my bike to a guy. It really impressed him. I wish I knew this before, it would've saved me a lot of kicks and sweat.
This is not a bad idea, but I have had 7 500s and this is how I do it. 1. Have a mechanically sound bike blah blah blah. 2 Turn on fuel and lean bike over until fuel runs out. 3 TDC piston, and kick... hard. They usually start 1st kick. Be careful, this is not allways necessary. If you do this to a warm bike it could flood.
@ChEmEkMaN Go and start the bike up! Some of my bike trickle fuel from the opposing vent hoses also. Make sure your carb is clean and the float properly set.
Having a clean air cleaner, fresh fuel and the proper pilot jet makes starting these big bore bikes much easier.
@arizonamotocross i try men but nothing i spend 1 hour kicking and nothing! my main jet is 320 and the pilot i dont now. i have spark an a new filter.
IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been unable to start my DT400 for a long time, tried this method and it fired 2nd kick, its never done that before, I am 71 years old.
@TerryJefferies Try it when warm. If it works, perfect. I would guess your jetting may be lean if you must use the start method when the bike is at full operating temperature.
The theory is that the fuel level in the carb rises beyond it's normal level enrichening the initial start-up mixture . I am unsure as to whether this method raises it so far that it actually 'floods' like the older type carbs used to, evident on many of them by fuel running out freely! I think it probably doesn't though - just raises it enough to assist in the cold start. In use the actual vent pipes sometimes get clogged up with dirt at the open end and cause problems. Cut them at an angle,
Works on bing's with ticklers. Before seeing this video I had hell of a time starting my bikes that have Bing tickler carb and no choke. Blow in the carb and those bikes start in a couple kicks now. I never have a problem starting a big bore that has a choke so I dont use this method there, I just turn on choke and kick until starts which is only a few kicks.
i had a 38mm mikuni i think flat side carb like yurs on my 83 rm250.i now have a 79 rm400 but it has a mikuni carb but not a flat side.i wanna switch up what mm carb is that and is it stock if it is stiock do u thik it can just bolt it on and not have to change my jetting?
@houston509 Un ami a proposé cette méthode commençante. Je l'ai essayée dehors, il ai travaillé. J'ai alors créé cette vidéo et l'ai signalée sur le youtube.
@arizonamotocross You can do the same thing by turning the petcock to on and lean over the motorcycle untill gas comes out the overflow tube on thr carb.,it's called charging the cylinder.
Does this work with 4 stroke? I got a KTM 600 enduro 1988 which is really hard to start... :(

How do you start that Honda wearing tennisshoes? I have a 84 cr500 and I would injure my foot doing that.
56BUICKRiviera 7 months ago
i dont see how that pressurizes the carb, the air will just escape out the intake.

I wish I had known this when I was riding my 74 CZ400 and 1978 YZ400 from 1979 until 1993! lol
