@xaeptyy get a Korg Kaoss Pad, it does a ton of effects like that controlled by a touch pad. I use a Kaoss Pad on my keyboard and its amazing!

I'm interested in the VP 550 precisely for the effect demonstrated in this video. I keep hearing that the VP 550 is great for producing background vocals. What if you want your primary vocals to have a sound like this similar to Kraftwerk or Zapp and Roger? Is the VP 550 the right equipment to go with. I would love to hear your feedback!

@pastellycan If all you want is the vocoder I'd look into 3 options: 1 software. You can buy plugins for GarageBand or any recording software that do the exact same effect, plug in a MIDI keyboard and you've got all you need to get the vocal effects. If you want hardware, the 2 best choices I know of are the Korg Kaoss Pad 3 or MicroKorg. Both are $400 and have excellent quality vocoders, the Kaoss Pad is an effects unit only so you need a MIDI keyboard too but the effects are incredible.

I like keyboards, have since I was little but some of this new shit they are making is as useless as it is boreing. Let me guess, in another decade, all of this equipment will be so cheap that most artists will sound exactly the same with no diversness, no moderation, no ballance bettween useage of fancy equipment like this, and simple hard earned home grown sound. I just sometimes feel its sonic overload nowadays. Needless, mindless synthesis... and often just sounds plain bad and contrived.

@angie4josh I actually disagree. If anything, new technology like this opens doors to endless opportunities. How will all artists sound the same if a good new keyboard can come with hundreds of different sound presets, and then you have other devices like the Continuum. Though you may be right about sound - if there's so many samples it's really hard to choose. Before, when keyboards had to be set up for a specific sound, the keyboardist had to know what they wanted, ie "their sound".

theres an effect in fruity loops called the Vocoder, and i think it makes it so even if you suck at singing, you just hit the notes you want it to do and your voice will hit that note, although, you will tend to sound like a sweet robot

It's a d-beam controller, basically a photo resistor, so technically it's different from a theramin, though the operation is similar. Roland puts one on almost everything they make nowadays -- percussion modules, synths, guitar and bass synth controllers, samplers, etc, etc, etc, etc. . . Roland makes a lot of stuff.
