there is a recording from that day where the order to "Fire" can be heard clearly. Troops didn't panic; they followed orders. I was a freshman in college when this happened. My thinking about America definitely changed that day...
Man do I remember the College campuses going absolutely wild when they bombed Cambodia. This really got airtime on the Networks. No leadership of those Guardsmen.
My family owned a restaurant downtown and it was vandalized by throwing rocks through the windows at innocent patrons they caused over 500 thousand dollars damage to the downtown area during this "Peaceful"demonstration. Not that I believe anybody should have gotten shot, those soldiers should have not have been there they had just come from a truckers strike where they were getting shot at.
At 5:13 in this video you said "All students wanted was peace and the end of violence.yet, their end was brought by violence.
FACT!!! Do you know how much violence and destruction was committed by the protesters during the original march in downtown Kent before the National guard was called in?
What gets me is the text commentary that provides the 'facts' In this case the 'facts' are not accurate. Not even close. Provides only a close approximation of the facts.
There is a close juxtaposition with the OWS protests to the extent that these people were practicing a very basic American right. And were met with violence. That is where this is significant in the current context. Shot by American Solders. Mistake. Intentional. Doesn’t matter. Fact is, it happened.
67 shots fired in 13 seconds...9 more wounded..1 paralyzed
44 bullets missed a target,...obviously 44 shooters had a conscience and intentionally missed...or were really bad shots. I'd like to believe they had a conscience that would not allow them to commit murder for the REPUBLICAN ESTABLISHMENT 's President.
@Jolo5305 National Guard are no different than the US Army. There just another sub branch. Like the Coast Guard to the Navy. So they are trained soldiers.
what ever happened to the soliders that shot them? If they dont know who it was,I bet the solider did. And having to live with that, must of been hell. Sad fact is, I love America, but our government can kill anyone anytime and get away with it. Rip Kent State Kids!! We wont forget!!!!
People hated the Vietnam War for the same reason that they hated the Iraq War. Neither of these wars were defensive. The biggest reason that people were protesting is because they were being DRAFTED into a war they didn't believe in.
Dear sensibleadult. No, you are not. No, they were neither anti-Christian nor communist sympathizers. SDS and other groups may have been, but not necessarily these students. In fact, half of the kids killed were simply watching from the sidelines. This country better learn from its considerable mistakes, including the reaction to the non-violent protest at Kent State, or it will be doomed to repeat it.
@DonnaPrice9 Nonviolent protest, my ass. Have you read what had been happening the previous days before the Kent State shootings? Did you read about the arsons and riots, or the firefighters being attacked while trying to put out the blazes?
The National Guardsmen were called out in response to the protesters actions, so say what you want about the shootings themselves, but the events that had them at the school can be laid at the feet of the protesters.
@TamarZucker I was against the war too; it was pointless and there were no US interests invovled. And I'm not cheering the deaths of those students, I'm simply pointing out the facts of what happened.
The prime reason they protested is that they were communist sympathizers. Groups like SDS and other well known radical groups were motivated by hatred for traditional American values. They were anti Christian. The war was just a convenient excuse to raise hell.
@sensibleadult I hope they were "anti Christian" if you are an example of a pro Christian. We all know about "Christian values" from folks like yourself. If you were educated you would know Christians used to be "Radicals" as was Christ. Have you ever read the Bible or is it that you just don't understand it? Educated people are representative of American values. Not to say you are not entitled to your opinion, just that you only represent yourself.
i believe we should never have gone over to Vietnam and started fighting in a pointless war and agree in what the college students did, not the violent part though
"gunsmen" ??? WTH is that? ..Get a life camera four and learn how to spell

They must of had a conscience. US soldiers especially from draft era were trained marksmen.

@mbryant86 Really? Are you telling me that the 5 weeks of combat training is what the regular US army gets? You should be ashamed.

Assuming every soldier only shot one bullet... And missing that amount of rounds is not bad at all actually.
