I don't know about you, but if I was from a small town like he was, I imagine he would have preferred to have just gone to a dinner with Kathy and chatted rather than go to a big event where I imagine he was largely ignored. And I'd feel shit about myself if Kathy had said to the entire room I'd given more than I did. I would have felt like a disappointment, and so he probably ended up being that way.
