Hey Ken, just came across your videos yesterday. I am a 16 year old guitarist (used to play piano) but i really would like to learn how to sing. I could write a huge paragraph on my questions and what not, but i'm really just wondering, where do i start? I don't have enough money to buy your dvd's quite yet, but i want to sing. The only time I can practice is on walks and stuff, cause I'm not to keen on practicing in my house. I would really appreciate it if you replied! Great vid.
@kentamplin Thanks for being honest Ken, I will hopefully have enough money soon to buy 'How to sing vol.1.' I guess its just time to nut up or shut up for me. I do have another question. Suppose I am able to practice consistently, should I bother with voice lessons, or just buy your dvd's? (or both?) Also, do you think it would be reasonable (after practicing with your dvd's consistently) to sing in a talent show in the summer?
@CapandTase that depends on how you are able to learn. The DVD's are way better money wise thatn taking lessons. That could get quite expensive for you
@CapandTase If you want to save some pennys and embarising practice, get a tune you know the word and love inside out. Play it on your system kinda loud so you can feel the music, Take a deep breath and kinda mumble sing it to get your tone right. then just get louder as your mojo get into it, It won't be instant takes a few weeks. Spread your favroite songs though as you will find you will hate hearing your favs if you practice them to much ;)
Hi Ken... Please make acoustic versions like this of "Make Me Your Voice" from Make Me Your Voice: Worship Leaders Unite For The Voiceless Of Sudan and "Sing Hallelujah" from In The Witness Box. God bless you. You're the best Sir.
Hey i have only been *attempting to sing' for a couple of months and seeing ever so slight improvements but i cant get past a G4 (hurts when i try to push through unless i go to falsetto) and the notes close to that don't sound great when i sing them but i cant seem to build on how to improve them and was wondering if your Vocal videos were worth me buying or i should just quit whilst i'm ahead, Hope you get this :) - New to youtube to so i dont know if this actually sent or not :(:)
amazing! i think your rendition is awesome, and you captured the emotion perfectly, though still maintaining your own voice and not sounding like a copycat. I think this would sound awesome with the TC helicon.
I'm so used to the Dobie Gray version of this song, but you totally changed the lyrics to fit Christianity, I love it. I can barely sing, but I want to learn so bad. Do you have any advice?
I really enjoy your voice and would be overjoyed to learn to sing like you , I know I have it in me if I tried to learn, sadly, cannot afford the lessons, anyhow, thanks for being an inspiration!
Hi, I wanted to ask a question. Mitch Allan (former lead singer of SR-71) has, I think, one of the best voices in the world. Do you have any tips on how to get the raspy, ripping tone of his voice like in "Axl Rose" i.e when he says the word "Where"? To be able to get that ripping out of my voice would mean the world to me. Thanks.
@Musclecar1973 that comes from years of singing (like aging a fine wine). To do this prematurely will hurt your voice. You would lean into the sound and over time develop rasp like this. There is a right way and a wrong way to do this.
@kentamplin Thank you for your response I appreciate it. I have another question. I've noticed that many of my favorite singers that have a ripping tone to their voice i.e David Lee Roth, Jack Black, Axl Rose, smoke and or drink. Does that have an impact on their ability to do this and on their voice overall? Thanks.
@kentamplin Thank you for your response. I have another question. I've noticed over the years that many of my favorite singers that have a ripping tone to their voice i.e David Lee Roth, Axl Rose, Jack Black, smoke and or drink. Does this affect their ability to do this and does it affect their voice overall? Thanks
@kentamplin So I'd imagine that smoking is basically a major contributor/boost to the raspy, tearing tone of rock vocalists? I appreciate all of your responses. Thanks
@Musclecar1973 it contributes however, I don;'t smoke and can sing in a very raspy tone...the difference is that I can clean up my sound as well and use both
@kentamplin Thank you for your answers and I appreciate your honesty. If I ever become a famous singer, I'll be sure to credit you and maybe collaborate on a song ;)
You're a great singer. I've been learning how to sing better just by watching you and listening to you. I'm a song writer and my friends have been pushing me to sing them. And I'm an average singer at the moment, friends say I'm good. But I think not. So thank you my good sir.
Your main vid on YouTube was a complete ad where you basically listed your accomplishments and all that you know without providing any useful information.... But this vid made me realize that you totally know what you're talking about vocally. You sound phenomenal man.
i really injoy your singing , but i really wanted to try out for Canada's got talent. My friend davey says i wont make it only becasue he want to go in it to. People say that my voice is better then his only because i dont stairne my voice as he does and i can hit really high and really low notes. I need to know how to contorl my voice a little bit better but dont know how. I also dont know how to keep my voice in a long tring of note. Could you show me how?
@kentamplin I dont think your good a singing. I could do better......NO! just kidding man i thought that was bad ass homie. This is the truth you got more talent than some of these new stars. Keep on man You kick ass
@kentamplin You can be both. Some people sing with their guitar. Like Andy Mckee, Sungha Jung, Igor Presnyakov, and some other guy I can't remember who. lol, but the point is to not just train yourself in one field after you start to get experienced. Ken's obviously great at guitar, so use his vocal course if u can afford it and use a nice guitar for accompanyment.

Vocalist) but can u please share ur thoughts on why u think u didn't become as famous as he is? Cause it's not fair u deserve to be up there with the greats!
hey ken, i want to be able to sing like or similar to john lennons style. Not so much about range as tone is important. I'm having a problem when i record my voice. It will sound good when its played at a high volume, but when i lower the volume, it loses all power and tone, any advice?
the holy ghost is just the mind and its thought process and the peace that you seek is more of a feeling of calmness and bliss which is just a brief detachment from your mind, in my opinion
When I was listening to this song, I started to get really happy and all of a sudden half way through all of these like fuzz balls fell from the ceiling. The is no draft of air or windows open or vents. I do not know how to explain this....
You are an insperation to me! This really is amazing and takes giant amouts of talent and you have more than enough! I love the raspy-ness to your voice and it just astonishes me! I can't emphasize enough that this is so good. Thank you for posting this so I can enjoy listening to this as much as you enjoy playing it! You should be known around the wolrd more than you already are! I'll try my best to spread the word about you so everyone can enjoy this and learn from you. Take care keep it up!
You deserve much more views and attention than you have. I'll try my best to spread the word about you. You also have an outstanding voice, if you were not aware of that yet. But seriuosly, you have amazing talent. Take care.
wow i luv ur voice i lik to sing but im still a kid and do not hav an amazing voice lik u but i want to go to a performing arts camp to improve ,please can u let me kno some tips to be a little beter
Absolutly the way im wanting to sing and the whole guitar chord progression is amazing but im not a fan of the references to god. Very heartfelt tho n regardless of religion is a fantastic song
ken, when hitting the high notes how do you get them to be loud still? when ever i get to the top of my range it starts to sound quieter. is this normal?
@PurpleHat1991 I use a technique called "Open Throat Technique" where I literally open the very very back of my throat when I sing. I then compress the amount of air that I am using (so as not to use too much and dry out the chords).
@morghancassie start by holdiing the root note you are wanting to sing. Slowly drop the note 1/4 to 1/2 half tone note below the note you are singing and jog between the two notes. Little by little try to pick up the speed of jogging between the two notee. Eventually it will be so comfortable it will become "natural."
hi i was wondering can anyone learn to sing from scratch or do you have to have some talent to do what you do which i have to say is amazing man you got a great voice
@kentamplin thank you god sir you really showing good stuff here i will be checking this out you seem like an amazing teacher who not only says he can teach you how to sing but shows it!!
I just have to say, you are a very impressive singer. I have been singing all my life, and I have a ridiculous (not trying to brag) range of styles that I enjoy singing. I consider myself to be a fairly good singer, although I've never done anything with my voice in particular. Just wanted to say I love the idea of this academy you have started. Do you only pay for what you want? I'm not sure the website clarifies this.
@GuitarInuendo I have a DVD series that needs to be followed the way I lay out. If you do it as I show, it will rock your voice beyond anything you could have expected from yourself. I also give web cam lessons and in studio coaching
i got a recording studio mixer thing at my house and i just listened to my self sing heaven by warrant and i sound similar to jani lane, which i am proud of, the only problem i have is the louder singing part. Does your academy teach how to sing louder and do yell parts in songs?
Ken Tamplin, I can honestly say that you are the first inspiration I have encountered in all of my 20 years! Can you really take an unexperienced voice and make it as perfect as yours? I would very much like to learn from you.. Could you really make something beautiful out of nothing special?!
@BeeutifulLife thank you Becca. Actually, it is not I that can make you great, it is you that can make you great. I can only give you the proper tools :-)
@kentamplin thats cool, i play guitar and am a big fan of Chris Cornell and soundgarden, but im a terrible singer :(, so i try to avoid that whole league of music.
@kentamplin What vocal technique is that? Myles Kennedy is my favorite musician on the planet, i personally consider him one of the best singers EVER!
@kentamplin I was just about to say I only know of two artists that can apply a similar technique as you do that would be the great myles kennedy beautiful voice. Axel Rose too. The best singing voice I have EVER heard must be Chester Bennington of Linkin Park - Such control from low to high and such power
its nice to listen to you ken nice, I have no high pitch control what so ever, my voice is all Bass XD

the holy ghost is just the mind and its thought process and the peace that you seek is more of a feeling of calmness and bliss which is just a brief detachment from your mind, in my opinion

Take care.

ken, when hitting the high notes how do you get them to be loud still? when ever i get to the top of my range it starts to sound quieter. is this normal?
PurpleHat1991 7 months ago
@PurpleHat1991 I use a technique called "Open Throat Technique" where I literally open the very very back of my throat when I sing. I then compress the amount of air that I am using (so as not to use too much and dry out the chords).
kentamplin 7 months ago
@PurpleHat1991 thats sooo ture i hav no idea how to fo that i think its hard and i really want to be a singer!!!
queenjulie66 7 months ago
@morghancassie start by holdiing the root note you are wanting to sing. Slowly drop the note 1/4 to 1/2 half tone note below the note you are singing and jog between the two notes. Little by little try to pick up the speed of jogging between the two notee. Eventually it will be so comfortable it will become "natural."

Alexis60549 7 months ago
I just have to say, you are a very impressive singer. I have been singing all my life, and I have a ridiculous (not trying to brag) range of styles that I enjoy singing. I consider myself to be a fairly good singer, although I've never done anything with my voice in particular. Just wanted to say I love the idea of this academy you have started. Do you only pay for what you want? I'm not sure the website clarifies this.
GuitarInuendo 7 months ago

@kentamplin thats cool, i play guitar and am a big fan of Chris Cornell and soundgarden, but im a terrible singer :(, so i try to avoid that whole league of music.
AppleFaction 9 months ago
@kentamplin What vocal technique is that? Myles Kennedy is my favorite musician on the planet, i personally consider him one of the best singers EVER!
Tallguyalec 8 months ago
@Tallguyalec one of the vocal coaches I studied under for many many years was Ron Anderson. As did Myles and Chris Cornell...
kentamplin 8 months ago
@kentamplin I was just about to say I only know of two artists that can apply a similar technique as you do that would be the great myles kennedy beautiful voice. Axel Rose too. The best singing voice I have EVER heard must be Chester Bennington of Linkin Park - Such control from low to high and such power
its nice to listen to you ken nice, I have no high pitch control what so ever, my voice is all Bass XD
