  • Just imagine all the cash you could save if you quit smoking. Great cabin and solar system. Have fun. Did some math for you on what you could do with the cash saved. One pack/day= $120/mo @ $4 per. You could buy an extra Trojan battery and propane for the month (your claim of $60/mo for heat). The next month you could buy gas for the gen with enough left over for a new drill, skil saw, etc. Next month you could purchase a nice faucet for you shower. etc. I guess you see my point. I'm a doc. :)

  • @saxmanchiro

I'm trying to quit and I don't recommend anyone ever start smoking. Dirty, nasty, expensive habit!

  • @solarcabin Fogot to add this little tidbit. Just imagine all the extra yrs you could spend in your get-away cabin if you quit, and those yrs would be much more comfortable, less smelly too. Take care and enjoy the great outdoors. Love the porch. I have designed and built two homes for my family, so carpentry is also one of my passions. I plan on purchasing 10 or so acres outside of town and build something similar, off the grid. Both homes I built were solar(active and passive).

  • @saxmanchiro

I was quit for 20 years before I got involved with a girlfriend that smoked- big mistake!

Good luck with your new project!

  • i love this i got my own land and have a small home and im trying to go off grid but its hard cuz of the bills, but when i get mine straight il post a vid.this is great only if everbody would do this maybe we could take our country back cuz thay wouldnt hav anything to hold us to there system, god bless

  • for most people this would not be a house to live in. But for me this is my kind of dream house!! great work!

  • about how much do you spend on propane in the summer and winter?

  • @dasgemuse

Propane is $2.50 a gallon here and I use about $60 a month in winter for heat, cooking and OD water heater. Much much less in warm weather.

  • @solarcabin WOW man you're livin the life. believe me when i say, i'm jealous

  • It's an awesome home, Solar

  • i love it... any issues with building codes and insruances???

  • @y2kxj

No building codes here but depends on county. My insurance is using my head and a good gun!

  • DON'T put your door backwards like that if you live in areas that get lots of snow. You will get stuck inside

  • @sideswipe147

Did you notice the big front porch ? No snow in front of my doors.

  • what i like about this man is his simplicity and intelligence.

  • the door swinging out is better security as well if someone try to kick in the door they have to get past the whole door frame

  • Awesome

  • love it

  • DO YOU HAVE A GREEN HOUSE?

  • @trisgilmour

No my house is more brown LOL! I do use cold frames and a mini greenhouse for starting plants.

  • another tip, look up fresnel lens like in old projection bigscreen tvs in the trash. build a frame and you can heat up covered dishes and small cast iron skillets when you build a frame for it and stuff. ive got like 6 of them

  • Is this primary home or just a weekend retreat?

  • @ramblingjerry

This is my full time home and have been living in the cabin for about 8 years.

  • Neat, compact and no doubt quite comfortable for two people.

I love the idea of minimalist living although I don't think I could be quite as minimalist as you are.

I really enjoyed your videos, Thanks for sharing your dream.

  • 2:16 we have that same table

  • camel crush?

  • @KuiteVentures

I quit smoking for 20 years and then got a girlfriend that smoked and I started again. Damn girlfriends! Don't smoke- it ain't cool and a big waste of money.

  • @solarcabin you should grow your own tobacco then you'll have toatl self sufficiency :-) - there's a couple of guys on our allotments in england that grow their own in green house

  • Might not want to pour your grey water with that dish soap sitting on the sink onto your fruits/veggies. Contents of Palmolive Dish Soap are as follows:

Ammonium C12-15 Pareth Sulfate, SD Alcohol 3-A, Lauramidopropylamine Oxide, Sodium Chloride, Magnesium Sulfate, Poloxamer 124, Pentasodium Pentatate, Preservative, Sodium Bisulfite, Dyes, fragrance. Not something I'd care to have going down into my well water, either.

  • I'd love to do this but there's no way this would fly with my wife :(

  • @ShaneMSnyder

How would your wife like to have no house payments and no utility bills ? That is how you can convince a wife.

  • Thats pretty damn cool man! I would love to do this as well but getting the wife on board would be somewhat of a challenge

  • lol traded a guy for some work

  • this is just too cool,,,most people can not think that far ahead,,you know keeping up with the jones have inslaved most of us

  • Smokes Camels! Thumbs up for Camels.

  • I'm not being a jerk here just saying that a person that's less handy could purchase a used travel trailer and do the same thing with the solar panels with less work but I would have much more enjoyment knowing I did the work myself. I love this cabin!

  • seriously fucking awesome man... i wish we could come up with ways to get away from the propane, i wonder how long your propane would last if you added a wood stove?

  • @doinworksonnnnn

I am looking at building an outdoor woodfurnace to heat the cabin and maintain interior space.

  • I may have designed things a bit differently. However, how can you recycle soapy water? wouldn't that kill your garden?

  • @KJamesSr

You can get biodegradable soaps and they break down in the soil. The cabin was designed for my lifestyle but could easily be modified to fit your lifestyle.

  • @solarcabin Here in Greece, we have soap made of ashes and olive oil , with no soda nor chemicals. This kind of soap can be washed right into the earth. I do not know if you have them in the States.

  • @Cecilitsa We kind of have things like that, however they are either very hard to find or are not what they claim to be.

  • @DRUNKASSPUNK800 You can use baking soda as shampoo, at least that, you can drop right into the earth (if it is diluted).

  • If heat rises, then why would they put the freezer at the top of the refrigerator?

  • @parasitesarefunny Hi. The outside temp should not interfear with the internal temp. Indeed, if a frezzer or fridge is put into a cold room, they tend to stop working over time, untill you put it back into a warmer envioment.

  • toilet?

  • @hendrixnut

    Watch inside videos for bathroom.

  • I like what you have done. One question though, or is it a recomendation? That is; why not have the water that goes into the bucket that's under the sink, instead go straight outside into a small gardening resovior which has a hose at the bottom to save you lugging buckets about the yard. Just a suggestion to you, as what you have there is 100 percent more than I have at the moment. All good stuff there. nelly.

  • what about your mail

  • @MrSteelman86

I have a mailbox right on the street in front of my cabin.

  • You said you have a girl friend than you say your single??

  • @MASK81

    Shhh- don't tell my girlfriend!

  • I love the very efficient use of space. The cabin is so very roomy on the inside. I notice you use propane for at least a couple of appliances. Is your monthly propane cost lower than city gas or is it comparable?

  • @MrAnthonyRizzo

Propane here is $2.50 a gallon and it costs about $50 a month in winter.

  • @solarcabin That is very economical.

  • My husband and I are living in a small cabin also. Storage is always at a premium, so we allowed for bench seating on the "back sides" of the table. As with yours, our table stays up against the wall unless we need to access the storage that is under the benches or require additional seating. Very inexpensive to build and provides a use for the previously unused space.

  • @DenToniMoberly

Sounds like a smart use of your cabin.

  • Don't you have to pay stamp duty... do you have a job or is all this completely free?

  • but you still need a job...

my own goal is to own a small cabin on a homestead that is completely self reliant. I couldnt be convinced that isnt possible. This is great for low cost living, but it is not completely self reliant.

  • @W4rthogOfWar It's more self reliant than the way most people live. His goal may not be to be completly self reliant.

  • @W4rthogOfWar ``In any case you still have to spend some money. Things like tools, property tax, and transportation all require money. I think the key is to be skilled in useful trades that you can either charge for your services or trade for other goods and services. In that case it is very possible to be almost completely independent.

  • Your videos are extremely inspirational to me and your concept is amazing! I'm sure I will have a lot of questions for you in the near future.

  • wouldn't it been easier just to buy a cheap used small house trailer?

  • @xle5363

House trailers and RVs are not insulated for winters we have here and most would cost more than the $2000 I paid for the cabin and wouldn't have as much room.

  • @solarcabin untrue the artecfox series are winter rvs.heated tanks insulated etc,

  • @solarcabin That's an awesome cabin, I'm thinking about building a small house. Ya know if you wanted cupboards for your kitchen you could probably find some decent ones for free on craigslist

  • got every thing you need without the expense.

    I like it.

  • What do you use for a legal "residence" address? For like your DL, or official docs like that...

  • @goingoffgridblog

I have a rural mailing address and a physical address just like everyone else.

  • How would one earn income in this set up?

  • @gh5908

Any way you want. work a job, start a business, or farm.

  • I see alot on Craigslist, land.

  • Would it be easier or harder to make this a mobile cabin on wheels to avoid building permits and other hassles.

  • @bonzaibb12

Any house on wheels has to be less than 10 feet wide but there are many plans for homes on wheels that would work and I include some in my book.

  • what is the property tax rate in your area?

  • @hutchcraftcp

Depends on how the property is classified. I pay $170 a year

  • @solarcabin Alot less than you spend on camel cigarettes per year im sure : )

  • @hanoitwin

Back off my habits now ;)

  • @solarcabin Marlboro reds for me! nice set up tho friend, very cool!

  • How long it take to build this cabin

  • @Cam6990

I built the cabin in two weeks. Faster with more people to help.

  • @solarcabYea ima buy your book when my money approves in paypal. Im sick of being broke cause of bills. Where can you go to look for cheap property everywhere is expensive?

  • @Cam6990 ebay

  • I read a thing where someone said one time, (paraphrased) "off the grid means on propane." I am surprised how much this appears to be true in your house.

You are still dependant on petroleum. Have you considered stepping up your electricity production, or producing your own oil or methane?

  • @JaycubL

Propane is widely available and is a bi-product. I also use passive solar heat and a solar water heater. Methane digester plans are in my book.

  • buying land and building this in the uk would be a nightmare quater acre costs £3500 you cant build a deck without being told off by the council something like this would be almost impossible

  • Thankz for your informative videos. It's helping us all to be free hopefully again one day.

  • How do you deal with the zoning inspectors?

  • @dsm811

Not all counties have inspections or building codes.

  • @solarcabin wouldnt that be nice i built my last house out of a 1950s shed in someones backyard it was awsome i lived there for 7 months then the city shoed up and sed get out its not a dwelling i got berned 3=

  • Hello, I just want you to know how incredibly grateful I am to you for your videos and information.

  • @cymonebreathe

    thanks, glad they have helped!

  • eventually it wouldnt b hard to get some cheap piping & run a leach pit out of stones n such in the ground frm ur kitchen somewhere not in the way , tho ofc these things should b planned b4hand,. remember sanitation cures diseases , good health fresh food n water,. septic management etc,. i also wonder , do u have an alloidial title, or a treaty with the original owners of the land ?

  • have u heard of the solar can heater things made out of boxes with transparent face & aluminum cans? tht cn be used as ovens or water heaters,. something u may wan look into,. also not sure wat u do wit ur crapper, but there is some gd recycle system other thn a leech pit or septic, apparently cn even use it to grow ur vegies ^_^ .. btw, u should also look into water filtration reverse osmosis, & get rid of the coke,. expecially the fake cola tht prolly got 951/961 aspartame in it.. Cheerz :)

  • @StoneOz looking at doing thermal heater myself for the farm house I'm in, just got to find a old sliding glass door for the front of it.

  • how do you fill your 25g fresh water supply

  • @willy535

I have a free flowing well on the property. Directions for drilling a well are in my book.

  • Subscribed Great Channel

  • Absolute genius. Very neatly laid out, obviously meant for the comfortable living NOW and in the future. I'm impressed. I would personally paint the exterior for better longevity. But the great thing about something like this is that YOU can do what YOU want to do. I love it. I'm currently planning an underground house that I'm hoping will offer me the same freedom and warmth you obviously have from your home. WELL DONE!

  • you've definitely put a lot of thought into this.

    love this cabin.

    very nice. keep it up.

  • wow dude you're so clever. BRILLIANT the system would say oh go to home depot. but that whole thing you said getting salvage from RV that was clever.

  • how far are you from Walmarts? Shopping mall? movie theater? Los Angeles? because as much as i would love that I would need to be in Los Angeles. Heck i miss LA already just looking at the video. I love the country. I so want a cabin. i've been thinking about getting one i saw a lot of these videos on here. SWEET. very clever.

  • @WonderWomanFan4life

I live 10 minutes from a small town and 30 minutes from a city where there is a wallmart. I like country living but sometimes visiting a city is nice.

  • @solarcabin

thats sweet. i was wondering if you had a garden or some livestock as well. I am definitely thinking of doing this in the future and i understand i am from the country and i love it. but for now i have to work and live in LA and it is sooo crowded and sooo many people. but we'll get it together. thanks for sharing i really liked your video. checking out more cabin videos.two fellas i know moved from los angeles Beverly hills to montana cabins he built a nice cabin for 47 grand

  • i still think a RV is better, i can be mobile and still have access to my home when i want to travel no high priced hotels with their high food costs

  • @pro311031

An RV is OK and if you do not want to have a permanent base is a good choice. I lived in a camp trailer for 2 years before building the cabin. BUT RV's and camp trailers are usually not insulated well enough to handle weather extremes and a new one will cost you alot more than the cabin.

  • @solarcabin some girl who was living in her RV did say that she was cold while living in her RV during the winter

  • why not have the drain going out side to a water barrel for your grey water, because if you forget or someone new comes to your house it will over flow. Do you capture water off of your roof into a few water barrel, and filter it for the whole house?

  • @pro311031

I recycle grey water from sinks to my garden and shower water goes to the lawn.

  • @solarcabin Do you use an indoor toilet or outhouse? If flush toilet, do you use grey water to fill toilet?

  • @SuperOffgrid

I use a solar composting toilet of my own design. Toilet is a porta potty emptied into composter outside once a week.

  • @solarcabin How well does it work? I have not heard good things about composting toilets. I currently use an incinolet electric toilet, works great, but it has a hour cycle time so I end up running my generator much more than I would like. Are composting toilets sensitive to temperature? Any secrets to making one work properly?

  • @SuperOffgrid

My solar composting toilet works different by evaporating off the excess moisture. 6 years in operation and only a few inches of compost in the tank. It does not freeze in winter because of the solar factor. Plans are in my ebook.

  • hmmmmmmm minecraft idea

  • he said he had a microwave because he wants quick meals for a "single guy" but he brings up a gf a lot in his video.. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm :P Jk. i admire this guy. im on a fixed income. and i have been thinking of doing somethin like this myself soon. show something for myself for what i can afford. :)

  • @synystergates07

Hey don't pull my covers now- she might be listening LOL!

  • Some truck stops sell 12 volt microwaves, you should pick one of those up.

  • When I got back from my last overseas job,I had 250 lbs.of stuff.250lbs. is what they allow to be shipped home. 20 years later.... I have thousand and thousands of pounds of....stuff. I like this idea of a simpler and "less stuff" way of life.

  • What job do you think someone could work just from a computer at home, without having to leave at all? I was thinking internet advertising or IT. Those might require a college degree though. Shit.

  • @DesecrateConformity

If you have a product or service that people will buy the internet allows you to sell it worldwide. Look in to Ebay, Amazon and other services.

  • @DesecrateConformity: My son works for Oracle Corp, 95% from home. Some companies allow, even encourage, this sort of employment. Just have to imagine what sector you want to give time to and ask the right questions. As always, if you don't get the answers you're looking for, ask again or figure out a way to re-frame your question. Tech-savy folks should have no problem finding their niche. Good Luck!!!

  • how do you wash your clothes?

  • @Bambam62g

I have a washer and dryer in the shed that can be run off the generator and use a hand crank washing machine. Video plans for the hand crank washing machine are on my channel.

  • how did you do your septic system

  • @45JTC

I use a solar composting toilet I designed. Plans are in my ebook.

  • whats the generator i saw in the background for?

  • @joshbulldog1661

I use the generator for running power tools and it can be used to recharge batts in the event we have many days without sun and wind.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't get the part about the water draining into the red bucket under the sink. Why can't you just have a pipe running outside into a dry well? Also, how do you use dirty dish water on veg. gardens if it has soap in it?

  • @19irving

I use biodegradable soaps and compost around plants filters water.

  • Is there an alternative to the propane? On a safety note, I've just never felt personally comfortable w/it.

  • @19irving

You could use wood heat or passive solar but propane is still relatively cheap and available and safe if you follow directions for installation.

  • Before doing this, check with local zoning. Many places will not allow a cabin to be built without a septic system. Also they may not allow running gray water out to the lawn. Some areas have a minimum number of acres to be buildable. All areas differ so you have to look for a spot without strict regulations. Awesome cabin!

  • I love your homestead. "We" have become so trained to "require" more, and then you are correct to say we become slaves to paying for all of it. Good for you. Families grew up in small homes in the past, and they were just fine. I envy you and your wife.

  • I think its all good one day I hope to have a underground home all solar I LOVE WHAT YOU DID

  • As a lady, I think this is pretty nice. I would live in a cabin like this with my husband. I think you've fixed it up really nice. Good job. :) Janet

  • or you can do the same without money: you find a nice peace of land in the forest, you have all your survival tools with you and live off the land. You have to be sure also, to find out a deep cave of aomething to pretect you from winter.

  • Hey solarcabin, did you do the plumbing yourself, or did you have to hire someone to take care of it?

  • @corndogers564

    All done by me.

  • Comment removed

  • you should build another extension, 14 by 14 i think i would go a little crazy in the head from being so enclosed.

  • great oven my camper has the same one good idea.

  • Screw college. I'm gonna buy a mountain property with a view and build a cabin!!! Fuck the system!

  • @DesecrateConformity hell yah man u can teach urself wutver u wanna know anyways

  • @DesecrateConformity Yes, F the system and F college, which is system indoctrination.

  • @Jaboie When you put "F" instead of "fuck", you are basically allowing yourself to be subordinated by the system. Don't do that. Ever.

  • @DesecrateConformity Fuck was a word created by the system. I am trying to avoid negativity because we are bombarded enough by that through television, radio, and every other pathway they use.

  • @Jaboie Um...Fuck actually means to....have sex... Anyways, suppressing your anger and negativity basically makes you seem like someone who is allowing themselves to be subjugated by the latent, non written social laws that the system implicates. But you are correct when you say we are bombarded by negativity through the media, but it's more stupidity and lies than anything else.

  • Why didn't you just buy a RV? It seems that most components are from one any way. Then hook up your solar and propane stuff to it! Just my thoughts!

  • @tigermaples

Rv's have less room and are more expensive. Most would not be insulated well enough for winter.

  • Comment removed

  • Basically this thing is a house RV minus the wheels.

  • no one needs a big house. these middle class families buy these huge houses and dont even spend time in the house. i like this cabin its seems cozy

  • Have you tried putting a water tank on the roof? Pump it up there and let gravity feed water to all your sinks, ect. You could also convert your generator to propane and wire it up with an electric start and battery so you can start it up with a switch from inside your cabin. Loved the video. Good for you man.

  • That eco temp thing I was wondering what that is because I seen those a lot in anime and japanese dramas I never knew what it was til I watched this video. That's cool that you built your own house.

  • This is exactly the type of living I've been looking for. My husband and I have been married for less than 5 years and have no children. We are in our 20's and don't want to be tied down by bills. I'd love nothing more than to get a small piece of land in the country and grow my own food. This was very helpful. Thank you.

  • The people who "dislike" this video must be mortgage brokers, insurance agents, credit card issuers and tax collectors. Nice debt-free lifestyle, man!

  • haha i have that same kitchen table

  • Love your cabin. I could live like that...but I'd have to have my woodshop. What a great place to play music, write songs, etc. My left hand quit on me because of some nerve damage so after 40+ years of playing I can't play anymore. It really sux, but I try not to think about it...that's where the woodshop comes in. Something creative to satisfy that need.

  • I have watched this vid many times and say.

    1. You are from Texas

    2. First obstacle LAND - I have been looking a long for some AFFORDABLE

    3. You have a couple of things that I would do different - NOTHING I would mention here, because this FINE!

  • I'd like to buy this guy a beer.

  • @SurvivalGrounds

Thanks- I wold be glad to share a beer with ya!

  • @solarcabin makes me wish I knew how to build anything..Would be a great project to do for a summer with my son. I have no building skills however.

  • @MischievousKittie

Nothing stopping u fro learning right ?

  • @MischievousKittie

Maybe learn how to build the first summer, and build the second?

  • @MischievousKittie Go to a bookstore and look at building books. A cabin is very doable with a few extra hands. If you buy a set of blue prints off ebay or somewhere else, many even come with material lists.

  • @solarcabin ill buy you a 30 case, lol, good job, i am 22 years old trying to do the same thing and i definately have more than enough money saved up from years of saving it....where did you learn how to build the cabin itself, any books or info that you can point me in the direction of? thanks and take care.

  • @Patriot3pcter

I took some construction classes in high school and worked part time as a framer in college so I had the basic skills. Lots of good library books on shed building and voc classes help.

  • @SurvivalGrounds hahahaha so true!!!!he seems like a really nice guy lol

  • @SurvivalGrounds i'd buy this guy a whole six-pack of sam. XD

  • I think its great that you are able to live this way. I'm not ready to live this way but downsizing and living on less would be wonderful.

  • Dude you are the man!! No jk!! I have the same goal live off grid..

  • This is a goal of mine. Thanks for sharing~

  • lamar, i live in southern indiana. i know, sucks to be me. anyway, where is there any town or county left that they don't regulate you to death?
