I got my disc July 1st, ripped it to iTunes, noticed the disc did indeed change and I was impressed. The disc just today got much darker. It started to darken again on the second day.

If that was too much, here is the tl;dr version. The disc heats up quickly and doesn't fade back for about 4 days.

it is due to a thermosensetive label, lasers give off radiation, radiation for the most part is heat. Try playing this in a DVD+RW or a DVD+CDRW drive in your computer and it will heat faster. I discovered this when I bought Year Zero and ripped it to my media server.

Yeah it blew my mind the first time I noticed it. Funny thing was I had the CD for about a year before I ever noticed. I think it is because I have a 3 disc CD changer stereo so I never pulled the CD out right after I used it. The CD player in my car has been broken forever... I just use ipod in the car now.

I checked the CD out of the library (<3 them) and didnt notice it the fist time i checked it out. the second time i was playing it with some friends and took it out. my reaction: ' wait this isnt the CD, where did it go guys?' their reaction 'we didnt touch it' inspects cd further, 'wait! this is the CD, how did it change colors? ' gets very confused and finnaly figures out that NIN was just messing with me and made the CD heat sensitive. Thanks for the vidio on it!

I noticed this in my truck looking for the cd and saw a black cd I didnt remember. When I took mine out of the package it had the binary look already. So when I put it away and tried to retrieve it looked nothing like I remembered :P

your disc isn't defective, it was just too hot when it get sent to you, put it in the freezer for atleast a minute and it will turn to black, also it would've been better for this "demonstration" if the cd wasn't grey instead of black like its supposed to be

Yes, it IS real, Trent Reznor is a GENIUS. I believe there is binary code on the disc that shows up when heated, that when decoded spells out a website.
