I passed through this checkpoint with other "internationals" as an act of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Two hours of standing in a penitentiary-like setting to go from Ramallah in the West Bank to occupied East Jerusalem--all in Palestinian territory. No one in my group had any illusions about the Israeli occupation. It is a crime against humanity and an attempt to force the Palestinian people to leave their land.

That's when the violence escalated into this. Other than that palestine under the Ottoman Empire was quite peaceful until the 19th century, but even then it was peaceful.
