I had a 1994 Ford Tempo. It was a great car. Since new it has only had 2-harmonic balances, 1-starter, and one front transmission mount. Not bad for 330,000-miles on the same engine/transmission. Original alternator and water pump. The transmission did finally die at 330,000-miles due to running low on fluid because of a small fluid leak that I didn't know about. I gave it to some kids in my church and they put another transmission pump in it and are still driving it today.
I do have to say, that the tempo's do ride really nice, are reasonably quiet and the seats are comfy. But other then that, they were really cheap cars. The 2.3L was underpowered and I think having a 3 speed auto hurt that engine. Tempos with the 5 speed manual were wicked fast, but the with auto, are slow as hell. Did Ford ever think of putting a electronic 4 speed auto in the tempo?? That would have been better.
@91Taurus I think it's stupid too. I would have put a 4 speed auto in the tempo, on both the 4 cyl. and V6., starting in 1990. I know they started putting the V6 in it in 92. I agree, the 3.0 and 5 speed manual would have been nice in the Taurus.
@wtl1964 Your friend must have had an after market transmission put in. All tempo's from 1984 to 1994 had a 3 speed hydraulic controlled automatic with no 4th gear. The early models, 1984 and 1985 had a 4 speed manual and then there was a 5 speed manual ;-)
Seems that without "Preferred Equipment Package 226A" you basically get 4 wheels and a seat. I like how she makes out seat belts to be some sort of rare feature.
@dirtleg27 Might as well replace the entire engine! LOL! I have only looked at water pump on one of these cars, replaced the shoe string belt. Thank god it was not the water pump!!
I'm a ford guy, but when you're trying to sell a car by regaling the benefits of "All season tires" , "manual lap belts" and "demisters", you're all but admitting that this car really doesn't offer much.
Overall this is/was a pretty reliable car, drove one, they had a powder blue colored one that was pretty nice. The 2-door version was unattractive though.
wow i will totally buy this because it comes with floor mats!! anyways in 90 i would have bought an eagle talon or dodge stealth and then in 94 bought a concorde and in 2000 an intrepid r/t and then in 2006 a charger
I,m in my mid 30's,desperate, totaly lost my self esteem and i am now convinced by this all christian looking sissy homemaker to buy this car ,start a family and drive to chuch every sunday in my all brandnew 1990 ford tempo!!
But..having it is getting me impotent, no family to drive to chuch..so what,s left..suicide?
ya ever notice how every single person who drives a ford escort is a fuddy duddy? why must they all drive 5-10moh under the speed limit? And the christians almost always choose the teal. bumper stickers are nearly ubiquitous as well. i actually believed that they some how had extraordinarily weak motors until i had to borrow one (from a fud of course). nope. i was cruising around at 85mph like nobodies business. hmm. profound. and another thing. why are all buick drivers republican?
Can someone explain to me why so many '80s and early '90s cars had those crappy motorized seatbelts? I HATED those things! Who the hell thought they were a good idea?
In the 1980s, around 1988 I believe, car safety policy was changed to include mandatory passive safety systems in all new cars. Passive safety features, in the 80s, came in two forms: airbags or automatic seat belts. Ford offered both of these in Tempo for 1990. The power seat belts were standard, but one could option for the SRS package which added a driver's side airbag and deleted the power seat belt on that side of the car.
I know eh? THey are so useless. Just another thing to break. Like 100% useless. It does not make anything easier for the driver, not even a little bit.
Note the adjustable tab style switch above the air vacuum controlled buttons themselves. The buttons control the vents where the heat is emitted (floor, floor+windshield defroster, dashboard panel vents, rear defroster), but the adjustable lever controls the heat intensity from outdoor temperatures to full on heater core heat.
My Mom had the LX model. In fact in the blue that is shown here. It wasn't a bad little car and it never gave her any trouble for the 6-7 years she owned it. Of course she just drives around town running errands and visiting.
That car was terrible. I owned one on 1981 and it was the last Ford we had. It just left me lying on the road too may times. We'll never forget that kind of crap from Ford.
I have a 1991 and the only trouble its given us was a little tranny trouble about 4 years ago that cost about $300 to fix. Its started on 0 degree "F" days on the first try every time
Bull shit. They weren't even making Tempos in 1981. 1984 was the first model year. The one time my '89 has left me stranded was because I didn't ever change the alternator belt, ever. Two decades old and it finally blew on me.
most american cars had the rear defroster as an option during the 70's,80's and early 90's, which I think was silly because all of the foreign cars had rear defroster as standard equipment starting in the mid 70's.

I think a 4 speed auto was only available with the 3.0 vulcan V6 engine from 1992-1994
91Taurus 9 months ago
@91Taurus Just looked it up, the 3.0L used the 3 speed auto as well. But it worked well with it, compared to the 4 cyl.
giannial1985 9 months ago
@giannial1985
Ah, well thats stupid. Seeing as how that same engine had a 4 speed in the Taurus
At least the Tempo got the 3.0 with a 5 speed manual option. I would have loved that in a Taurus....not counting the SHO which I already have

I think it's the grill, because I just have no interest at all in the 92-94 models.
