Midway was spared from the fate of the Johnston Atoll? ...My Brother was on the Johnston main island there in the Marine Corp in WWII. Sad the toxic poison has ruined the whole island....I would imagine Midday and Johnson are about the same? Anyone know? There were those who also spoke about their attachment to Johnston and speak of fond memories..but not as great as this place..I wonder what the attraction was for so many positive things being said about it?
WOW..I LIVED HERE 3 YEARS...BOTH PARENTS WERE MILITARY..I STILL HAVE PICTURES!AND A OLD VIDEO..WAS IN 66',67,68,AND SOME OF 69,. i ALSO WENT TO MIDWAY ELEMETARY SCHOOL..WOW;COOL!! :) WE USE TO FIND FISHBALLS EVERYWHERE..THAT'S JAP'S WEIGHT FOR THERE BOATS..FYI
I was there while in the Navy, from 1967 until 1968. I loved it. I worked as the Catholic Chaplain's asst. I wanted to stay for the four years LOL, some of the people thought I was crazy. While on the Island, it did not seem so small.
@markdohle I was a little girl at that time...bet you remember my dad..he was 2 in control..Mel. Drury..mom was Jean Drury..they play golf..and had so many military partys. Also lived in the big house
My Dad was stationed at Midway Island. We lived there from 1967 - 1969. The most amazing place back in the day. I am so glad I had the opportunity to live there and experience it as a young child...
Midway is awesome! i lived there in early 70's. Dad was stationed there with his Seabee unit. As a kid, it was an awesome experience. Now its just a bird sanctuary from my understanding.
I spent 54 hours on Midway back in 1981. It was supposed to be my first duty station in the Navy but they changed my orders the day after I got them. They did not bother to tell me or cancel my travel plans so I spent 6 days getting there and was rushed off to be asked, what are you doing here? when I landed. They got me on the next flight out so I spent a couple days there just walking around the island. And took some pictures. Had I stayed there I heard the fishing was great as was the diving?
I was there in 91-92 I was stationed at NAS Adak and my C-130 squadron use to fly people down there for three days of fun in the sun. Most beutiful water
Just curious, what brought you all the way out there? I would like to visit there myself because of the WW2 history but I'm not sure how I would ever get out there!
