Fucking great, dude. Don't listen to anybody who tells you how any song has to be sung. Trying a suggestion can't hurt(well, maybe your throat, if you try to be some kind of Tom impersonator), but Plumpy only touched on what I hear: you're not restraining shit, you're focusing it with a beautiful voice. "It" being soul. Your voice isn't "soulful," you have soul. That's what I get, anyway. We all love Tom Waits for how much passion he puts into his music, but the man don't sound pretty too often.
