Though published in the novel, the story itself is commonly known amongst people who were in the "spy business," no matter the country. The story was very-well known in Vienna, a spy "hang-out" during The Cold War. The Bacon Priest was also a master of disguise, who could even disguise as an old woman.

His charitable career is phenomenal. But equally (if not more) phenomenal was his secret role as an underground servant of "Pappa," The Pope. Amazing man!!

Seeing so many good people, in a world that seems to be seeking evil, Gives Me Hope! As bad as the world is I like to believe that most people still are good at heart. That might sound naive, but as my years grow older I see it more and more. If you look for the good in people you will often find it. God sees our hearts and intentions, while man only sees our actions, often our "bad" actions...

Strange how good men like Fr.Werenfried were formerly overlooked when the church during the reign of St.Pius XII was greatly accused of doing little to help Jews.

How many more unsung heroes like this good priest were never given any recognisition?

Fr. Werenfried van Straaten collected bacon and materials for the German Expellees from Silesia, Pomerania, East Prussia in 1947. Two years after the end of Nazi occupation, Flemish and Dutch Catholics sacrificed for the starving (due to Morgenthau Plan of the Allies and Soviet plunder!) German population. God will reward these true heroes. The heroes of the world, mostly, are false hypocrites. True heroes labour in silence.
