  • Two different companies. McMahon and Dick Clark were spokesmen for American Family Publishers, who was the main competitor for Publishers Clearing House. AFP went bankrupt in 1998.

  • McMahon has nothing to do with PCH

  • So there's supposed to be something like 211 winners of $1000, because they're going to have a winner in every TV viewing area across the country. But ONE of those winners will of course, actually win the $10 million. In one of the video I watched, they contacted the winner ahead of time to let them know they had one $1000 (when they had REALLY won $1 million). Here's my question- anyone been contacted yet?

  • Only reason I looked this up

    Sad indeed

  • RIP Ed Mcmahon

  • is there laughter in hell?

  • yes. Every time Bernie Mac tells a joke about Michael Jackson's plastic face melting in the scorching fires of Hell, there is considerable laughter

  • also, Isaac Hayes...in hell with the rest of the believers of Scientology

when I hear the guy in this commercial say 10 million dollars, I immediately think of Dr. Evil

  • how do you know there is a hell, what if their's not?

  • @willdav713 shut up

  • Sorry willdave713, Moonlightladychp is correct. The title should be corrected. Ed McMahon never worked for Publishers Clearing House and American Family Publishers never owned Publishers Clearing House. They were two separate companies (were because American Family Publishers is no longer in business). Lot's of people get confused -- but I have worked for PCH for 20+ years -- these are the facts.

  • Ok I see where we get confused the name of the sweepstakes was American Family at least it was back then. not the company. I see where I made a typo.

  • Thanks toddspch, I was pretty sure I was correct about this, if memory recalls. And fredcandace, OMG!!!! Just say "no", lol.

  • Hello My name is Rosalene Lopes, I have been trying to get the situation that I was in for the past 10 years. I was not able to reach you for the matter of my winnings that I was not able to retrieve back from 1997-1998. From your Sweepstakes I would like to know how get this issue that I am so curious to find I also believe that I may have been ripped off by my EXboyfriend who has put me in prison falsely accused of this charges on myself as my account was also were violate towards trust.

  • fredcandace in nigeria is this some kind of joke? Are you smoking crack? Are you that freak from the 80's Anti-Crack PSA vid? I could not make a word of what you are saying. I have payday bars I am high on that right now. yum payday, peanuts and carmel.

  • I remember Ed as a huckster on the Board Walk in Atlantic City, you see I was the little kid that would stop by and bug him, he would do W.C. Fields and say, "Beat it kid you bother me! The folks would go nuts! He gave me a dollar and had me come back later todo the same!

Love you Ed! David Davidson the kid on the Walk! 1946 (?)

  • Ah yes... an endless stream of money was flowing in for Ed back then.

How can someone worth $100 million at one time have no cash reserves to make his mortgage payments? I guess even celebs live at, or beyond their means... very foolish.

  • The most recent appearance of Ed MacMahon that I can remember is a PSA from the Ad Council on crime prevention in which he starts a neighborhood watch and all the people in the neighborhood are so excited that Ed MacMahon is there.

  • I have that commercial somewhere.

  • This past school year it has appeared frequently during the "PSA breaks" on the news programs done by our university's TV news organization.

  • American Family Publishers owns Publisher's Clearing House. He was not advertising American Family Publishers sweepstakes. Just like saying Hunts commercial should be Conagra Foods commercial. I do not know if American Family Publishers spun off Publishers Clearing House and become two separate entities later on, but during this time he was advertising Publishers Clearing House.

  • Someone should correct the title of this video. Ed McMahon was never associated with Publishers Clearinghouse. He was with American Family Publishers, a different firm entirely.

  • why was he in this commercial?

  • He's not in the Publishers Clearing House commercial. It's too different :15 second commercials (for two different sweepstakes/two different companies). It looks like they ran them back to back -- adding to the confusion. American Family Publishers was a "me too" company. They looked liked and sounded like PCH (on purpose -- even the name) that's why everyone is confused -- but there were never any PCH commercials with Ed McMahon.

  • regarding the american family sweepstakes, did they surprise their winners also?

  • no -- they featured the winners in scripted commercials in the studio with Ed except for their last year in existence when they tried to ripoff the Prize Patrol visit with an obviously staged surprise of one of their winners.

  • @toddspch -Ok, so he wasn't in the PCH commercials, but wasn't McMahon involved with PCH in some other manner? I mean, he got mentioned on the PCH blog when he died...

  • @Diva380 nope -- he wasn't involved with PCH in any way. He worked for a competitor -- American Family Publishers -- who went out of business in the 90's. He got mentioned on the blog only because of all the confusion.

  • does any1 have the clip of ed announcing the winning numbers?

  • I wish

  • Ed MacMahon FTW!!!
