What has REALLY surprised me is that there have been pumapards--leopards with pumas. It surprises me because all the other hybrids have been contained within the Pantera genus--as most animal hybrids are typically within the same genus. The puma is more closely related to the "small cats" and is of the genus Felis (same as domestic cats, black-footed cats, etc.) Not only is it a separate genus--its a separate subfamily. I guess the cat family is a bit more flexible genetically.

Originally, separate species were determined by appearances. Then, by whether they produced fertile offspring (ligers and leopons are sterile or successive generations see reduced fertility). Now DNA is changing the game. What's mind blowing is that tigers and lions have much less DNA in common than humans and chimps. Think about it.

Well if such animal really existed, I dont beleive it happend like nothing happen without an issue. Its simply because they might be alot of complications for the mother to give birth to the baby leopon and even the the baby would have problems as it would grow up. @dacshundgal313 i think the last leopon died in the 1920's so its not being done normally and no reputable zoo worth their salt would breed lion hybrids...there are alot of mental and physical health concerns with them not to mention each pregnancy with a hybrid offspring takes away time they could be having tiger or lion cubs...hybrids are either sterile/infertile or have low fertility in comparison with the non hybrid relations. not a rant just a statement of fact.

@CursedK9 Oddly enough, leopons could breed successfully with liguars (lion/jaguar). Though USUALLY two separate species will produce sterile offspring, this is increasingly shown to not be true all of the time. Look up all macaw hybrids out there--1/4 Military macaw, 1/4 Scarlet macaw, 1/2 Blue and Gold, just to give one example. Given that humans are genetically much closer to chimps than lions are to tigers, WE should be able to hybridize, with some manipulation.
