Wow -- Mary Travers is the freak'in "mom" mtRNA|DNA to Gisel Bündchen, among the recent decade's mega-top-dollar-paid fashions models ever...whereas, many contemporaneous critics et al narrow thinkers, discounted Mary's "strong looks" as, at best, a cruder version of the "Julie Christie school of peroxide-locks"; whereas, in retrospect--at least for newer generations--review of the ubber-graphical stagings, w/high-key lighting, proves my salient point. Not my type, but lookers all the same!
@jjsassenach1 ~ Here's to you and your service to humanity. Sometimes, I guess, those of us here in the USA tend to forget what those, serving in other countries, have given of themselves. I do know that my dad, who served in Europe during WWII and passed away in 1981, spoke, endlessly, of the courage of the British who, alone, stood against Hilter's war machine during the Battle of Britian. Our two countries have stood together, more than once, to guard the call of freedom. Here's to you!
@wilcarr1 ~ It hurt so much, it is impossible to describe the pain to anyone who was not in the middle of that bullshit. Who'd you serve with? I was with the 75th Infantry Rangers, 3rd Brigade, 1st Cav.
I left the States for Vietnam on 19 June 1969 and this was the song that has always taken my heart & soul back to that day. I was engaged to the absolute love of my life (Kathy) but within 6 weeks of arriving incountry she would write to say that she simple could not wait. It's been 42 years and I do understand why it was that way, a 20 year old young woman, full of life, waiting while it seemed the rest of humanity was living & loving. But there are still moments when I cannot stop the tears
@MrRonnieG / each time I hear this song it takes me back to the day when I left for Nam December 9,1969 leaveing my wife and one year old daughter at the airport. I remember the pain of looking out the jet window and craneing my neck for as long as possible to get my last glimse of them. wow, it even gives me chills and saddness now just writing about this and at the time not know if I would be back again. I was fortunate enough to return after one year as a infantryman. Welcome home friend.
i have to say your post brought tears to my eyes... I was born december 1969. I had 1 uncle do 2 yrs in Viet Nam, another was at the embassy during the fall of Saigon, and a cousin did 1 year, was killed 2 days before he was going on R&R to see his wife. Thanks for your service!
JIm Tranner, thank you for your service. Welcome home. I, too, had to board a plane on several occasions. For the other thirty years, I lead the SWAT team through the door(s). I hated to go, but it had to be done, and who better than I to be the point of the spear. Support from our loved ones was what kept us going. Welcome home, and et Lieber Oppresso!
Mary had the most powerful woman's voice I have ever heard, and was able to convey all of the emotion involved in this song. I feel the words now relate to Mary's journey to share her songs with God. God Bless you Mary, we will never forget you and your beautiful voice. Godspeed !
This is the first song I ever heard on the radio(at age 5) that made me cry. What great memories great songs and great performers.RIP Sweet Mary and John Denver
Tku 4 ur site. This music makes me wanna pose as a 12 y.o. girl and sign up for overnight camp at the Y! Tku. You bought the 4th of July party down with these old summer camp songs for us 54 & plussers! (smile)
My girlfriend was leaving for college at the end of the summer in 84".I would hear this song on the way home after dropping her off at home during the many nights I got to see her before she left. The cool , summer nights.driving alone with this song just made me cry, knowing she was leaving, not knowing if I would ever see her again. It captures all the emotions of a loved one leaving.
My mom was a Army nurse in WWII, when my dad signed for me to join the Army at 17 during Nam she never said a word to discourage me, although she started crying on the telephone when I called from Fort Polk LA and told her they wouldn't let me go because of my age, and kept me at Polk. Since then I have been to war, the funny thing is nobody in my family ever asked me about it, although they know I was a combat infantryman. Even my wife and kids never asked. Makes me feel lonely, like this song

@gringott12 Brother, you need to seek out those who have been there. There are only two types of folks in the world, those who have been where you have gone and those who haven't. Those who haven't will never ask the correct questions. Seek out your Brothers - they are there but you need to find them.
Funny all these comments from people who served, just because this is what my mom and people in her troop would sing to people shipping off. Yes my mom was in the military
I wish we could go back to the days of Peace & Love, Skip Vietnam and all the other wars since. Why can't people just ignore our differences and celebrate our similarities? I will never forget the ones who were lost, including Mary Travers. These songs were the soundtrack of my life. God Bless all our Veterans, especially those who went to Vietnam and were NOT appreciated when THEY came back. Thank God at least that has changed for the better. Peace & LOVE to all who read these words.
this song was playing the morning my brother took me to the airport to go to VIETNAM i was married and 20 years old still remember it like it was yesterday its been 40years ago
A lady of conscious, a lady of grace, a lady of talent. We miss you MIss Mary. You were beautiful, intelligent, compassionate. How we miss your social eye. And the beauty of your voice.
@AliceMarr - So kiss me and smile for me ....... Great words for Peter Pau and Mary .... but the words came from John Denver. We will miss him dearly.
@ProTrickster that may be so, but not every voice is best for a specific song. that's just the way it is. thats not an attack on her, merely the way it is.
@syngar99 does it matter? she sings it with passion, and has a different interpretation of the song, don't be rude, she lived a good and respectful life, don't be give negative views on anyone who is obviously high and better than you.
@syngar99 uhmm? how in any way am i hypocritical? I like LOVE john denver's version but i do know when i deserve to give a pessimistic comment on anything or anyone.
I'm being hateful to you, and you are a hopelessly pathetic.
Don't start the hate when you have nothing to back it up with ok? + in no way did i swear in my last or any comment, so i expect even you to have the slightest of courtesy to refrain from swearing. How childish and pitiful.
@HMinorHybrid nothing to back it up? as opposed to your lame bs? get over yourself kiddo. you jump in like the little idiot you are and then the best tact you can take i s" i don't swear so i win?" ROFL
@syngar99 Do you know how to back up your argument? When you have any evidence or quotations please make them direct. I just think it is pointless to swear and people who do it, are just immature and pathetic.
I really have nothing else to say to you, you are not worth my time (: get yourself a job and stop being so attentive to what i have to say, my opinion is that both versions are good, so try to get over it ok?
This song only gets better as I get older. I saw Mary Travers in concert in the mid 70s and she was absolutely awesome. This song is surely in my pages of my life.
Still difficult to believe that Mary is no longer with us. The best concert I ever attended was in college....2000.....adn it was PP&M......will never forget it!
To all you Amphitheater Panthers alumni, Arizona Wildcats fans and Carolina Panthers fans (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when Michael Bates came into the world (December 19, 1969).
I too had to tell my mom twice that I was going off to war. She already had another son in the war but as you said, "Never said a word". This song gave me hope and still reminds me of a time when I wished I was somewhere else.
This is why I don't like live "in concert" recordings, especially with artist now too old (or their voices blown-out) to sing their own songs well anymore. With a few exceptions (like Peter Frampton's live "Do You Feel Like We Do") and some MTV "Unplugged", give me studio recordings every time! Tired (drunk, stoned), improvising singers, bad stage sound mixers, audience noise audience participation... Arrrgh!
@pbanta62 I know what you mean. I wish They would do it exactly like I remember it an radio somtimes. However I still enjoy live performanes because of the honesty rawness and unprdictabiliy aspect it. It kind of the reason why I like listening to Jazz and why I enjoy conversations with people i find intersting and making love to women I am in love with.
@balmainguy Honestly dude, if you want to try to make moving music like this be my guest, he was a believer in free love, and he went with his heart, i don't condone what he did, but let the man live on with his life, this is not folk music it is true love in harmony-form. sheesh
To all you Amphitheater Panthers alumni, Arizona Wildcats fans, and lately you New York Jets fans: This was the #1 song in the USA when Michael Bates came into the world (December 19, 1969).
After so many years of living, the contrast between this version and the version from the 60's version is stunning and so very moving. Life changes people.
so, i dont knwo who this mary girl was, sorry if ive offended anybody. she is a wonderful singer, i like the bass tone to her voice. but honestly i dont like the way she sings this song. but i do love the song :)
Oh Mary, I miss you so much, you were a beautiful person, inside and out! Thank you for all your wonderful songs and talent! I cannot imagine how Peter and Noel Paul will endure without you. I am sure your spirit will carry them through!
To RheaThatsME, have you asked your son if he feels he has made a difference and is he proud of what he has done for his country?
By the way the VP550 stands for Vice President of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 550 and I am proud to say I believe I did make a difference and would go again is my country asked.
My parents were driving me and my girlfriend to the airport so I could leave for Vietnam when this song came on. I will never forget that ride as long as I live. I did not want to go to war but I felt it was for my country and our freedoms. I believe today my presents in Vietnam made a difference in my life & the lives of the people in Vietnam. I also believe the USA’s presents in Iraq & Afghanistan will make a positive difference there and certainly with the people who serve in those countries
The youtube url grabber just came out with additional new features! You can now play your favorite video on the page itself, and if you like to check out other videos, that wont be a problem, for the preceding video will automatically stop playing without dawdling its buffer time! Also, you can now download mp4 format for your mobile phone!
I have to admit I think of Miss Mary now when I hear these words. A courageous warrior for peace and for humanity. She is beautiful, funny, talented and irraplaceable. I just don't know what we are going to do. I guess the pressure is on us the next generation to pick up her awesome banner. Mary we love you, we WILL carry on, and in your strength and in Christ we WILL prevail. God bless dear beautiful lady.
Peter, Paul and Mary ... Classic ... The simplicity and powerful lyrics of their music were part of history ... and is what REAL Music is about !!! Even today it is simply Beautiful and touching !!! Thanks for posting this !!!
@HeartzWAY17 This one is written bu John Denver, he gave it to them and they had a hit with it before he did;-) but this one helped him to get a name as a songwriter;-)
@ElunedDdedwydd Your words are my words. She was my distant love since I was sixteen. My heart is broken since when she left us. But, God gave us a wonderful gift and now HE kept this precious jewel forever in His Kingdom!
To all you Arizona Wildcats fans and lately New York Jets fans: This was the #1 song in the USA when Michael Bates came into the world (December 19, 1969).
I went to VN with this song playing. I have a grandson just back, safely, thank God, from Iraq. This is a love song and a song about leaving and it still evokes the tears from me.
@soprisrb war didn't stop Nazism, communism, that is right: war was the result of people failing to stop Nazism, communism. There is a middle ground between surrender-is-always-the-answer and war-as-first-resort. Now let's go hear John Denver's original.
This is the theme song of the War in Vietnam. In previous wars it was either the train or the ship that troops left for battle on. It was the Boeing 707 that men flew off to war on.
I'm old and I remember this song not when it came out, but later. The vet war... it ended when I was in grade school. I thought all wars would end then. But the war machine, keep em coming. Kill more kids and keep em coming. Soon there won't be any more to just play with like that. Really America... you're sad. Stop this insanity, just say no for the kids.
Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll. Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll
Man ! What a great song and what a great bunch of comments..Gives this old man great hopes for the human race. I was gonna add my own sad story but instead I will just say this: Keep on dreaming people...keep on lovin. Its what PPM were all about!
@retytunjf if women refuse to marry a soldier perhaps that wil have an effect on their marital happiness a dead heroically decorated husband can give his wife no children
@vungtautwi John Denver wrote this song, he gave an album for free with unreleased songs tto his friends, Peter Paul and Mary where a few of those, this song was on that album, it was called. babe, i hate to go, PP+M named it "leaving on a jet plane but that,s it they had their first word wide hit with this and JD was known as a songwriter because of their hit. so they helped eachother ;-) he later recorded it himself.
Superb, much better than the stilted studion original. Mary Travers (no longer with us unfortunately) is so expressive in this clip, just brilliant music.
To Starlifter88...man, I am praying that you will be happy and in love again.....and I don't pray!!!!!!!! It's hard not to cry when I hear this. Take care mate and open your heart again, when you feel ready. Love abounds.
I grew up with Peter, Paul and Mary :)

Nut i will say I love little cunts that pull out the "I am leaving now" and " not worth my time".

"stop being so attentive to what i have to say"
Irony and hypocrisy tastes good with a side order of teenage melodrama.

To all you Amphitheater Panthers alumni, Arizona Wildcats fans and Carolina Panthers fans (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when Michael Bates came into the world (December 19, 1969).

I always loved this song, but as I age it means so much more to me and I feel like crying listening to it.

I too had to tell my mom twice that I was going off to war. She already had another son in the war but as you said, "Never said a word". This song gave me hope and still reminds me of a time when I wished I was somewhere else.

I saw you in concert many years ago. It was aweseome. Thank you !!!
LeeMike233 10 months ago
are these singers related? married? who?
purselady2 10 months ago
This is why I don't like live "in concert" recordings, especially with artist now too old (or their voices blown-out) to sing their own songs well anymore. With a few exceptions (like Peter Frampton's live "Do You Feel Like We Do") and some MTV "Unplugged", give me studio recordings every time! Tired (drunk, stoned), improvising singers, bad stage sound mixers, audience noise audience participation... Arrrgh!
pbanta62 10 months ago
@pbanta62 I know what you mean. I wish They would do it exactly like I remember it an radio somtimes. However I still enjoy live performanes because of the honesty rawness and unprdictabiliy aspect it. It kind of the reason why I like listening to Jazz and why I enjoy conversations with people i find intersting and making love to women I am in love with.

Let's not forget Peter is still responsible for sexually messing with a 14 year old girl...... Peter, Paul and f@#k off with your folk music.
Stop making excuses for losers like this one.

@balmainguy Honestly dude, if you want to try to make moving music like this be my guest, he was a believer in free love, and he went with his heart, i don't condone what he did, but let the man live on with his life, this is not folk music it is true love in harmony-form. sheesh

To RheaThatsME, have you asked your son if he feels he has made a difference and is he proud of what he has done for his country?
By the way the VP550 stands for Vice President of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 550 and I am proud to say I believe I did make a difference and would go again is my country asked.
vp550 1 year ago
My parents were driving me and my girlfriend to the airport so I could leave for Vietnam when this song came on. I will never forget that ride as long as I live. I did not want to go to war but I felt it was for my country and our freedoms. I believe today my presents in Vietnam made a difference in my life & the lives of the people in Vietnam. I also believe the USA’s presents in Iraq & Afghanistan will make a positive difference there and certainly with the people who serve in those countries
vp550 1 year ago
@vp550, some people never learn, do you... positive difference, my arse... how much more 'freedoms' do you have now, in your country or elsewhere?

@vp550 - Similar story. My dad was driving me as I was leaving for the army.

Yeah, because war never solved anything. I mean it didn't stop Nazism, communism, slavery or any of that shit. ROLLS EYES.
soprisrb 1 year ago
@soprisrb war didn't stop Nazism, communism, that is right: war was the result of people failing to stop Nazism, communism. There is a middle ground between surrender-is-always-the-answer and war-as-first-resort. Now let's go hear John Denver's original.

LOVE HATE SONG
This is the theme song of the War in Vietnam. In previous wars it was either the train or the ship that troops left for battle on. It was the Boeing 707 that men flew off to war on.

I'm old and I remember this song not when it came out, but later. The vet war... it ended when I was in grade school. I thought all wars would end then. But the war machine, keep em coming. Kill more kids and keep em coming. Soon there won't be any more to just play with like that. Really America... you're sad. Stop this insanity, just say no for the kids.

samfan6 1 year ago 2
@vungtautwi John Denver wrote this song, he gave an album for free with unreleased songs tto his friends, Peter Paul and Mary where a few of those, this song was on that album, it was called. babe, i hate to go, PP+M named it "leaving on a jet plane but that,s it they had their first word wide hit with this and JD was known as a songwriter because of their hit. so they helped eachother ;-) he later recorded it himself.
