The weather bureau reports no sign of an end to the dreariness that's bringing the whole world to a stop. The accident rate is up, birthrate is down, and every country in the world is blaming the whole situation on some other country. Hospitals report their patients have stopped asking when they'll get better. Things have become so depressing, in fact ... in fact, why am I even here? Why should I be the only one who hasn't given up?
The purple color kid is a brainy chick but if they are surposed to represent all the colors of the rainbow why is there no purple (or violet) on the rainbow itself?
This reminds me of the south park episode which Kenny Lyle Butters and Stan went to in imagination land which had some of these characters in it and other 80's character like the smurfs
It was imagination land when they were attacked by the terrorist who blow up the wall which had the monsters that gave kids nightmares and it was dark and black on that side and the god dreams with castles and every cartoon character from smurfs on and it had a castle and a rainbow in it .
@Mirokugirl15 I know the comic came out in 1958 by a belgian Peyo but it was not a us comic strip and when HB bought the rights from Peyo for the Smurfs the cartoon came out in 1981 and some of the characters on the smurfs cartoon HB came out with.
That evil entity Rainbow Brite fought kinda looks like NoHeart from Care Bears, so I take it he lost to Rainbow Brite & took out all his frustration on the Care Bears huh, what a loser! :P
i was like crying at 3:28....coz it's like a metaphor for life...there will always be people who try to bring you down and 'take the colour out of ur life' but you have to fight to keep that colour in
Hmm... I thought teh color on Starlits brow was blue in later Rainbow Brites, not red like in this one. I know it's all the colors but I thought blue was usually on the forehead...
He has a star on his face at the end here too. It's just harder to see because there are few shots of him in color, and in one it's covered up by his hair.
This video is missing a few seconds in the beginning I do believe. And yes, I did watch this episode that much as a kid that I really do remember the little details. lol
ok here's another starlite question. Here his mane is red at the front and blue in back. I've seen him with blue on the front and red in the back. which one's right??? ( i pick blue on the front)
Rainbow Brite I think is imperialism. The Lord of Darkness isn't actually "evil" or "dark", but this is how imperialism sees all civilizations that aren't like them.
i'm writing a book about a group of people who think that the other smarter group is evil, and that the first group is good. but nobody is evil in this case, so yeah.
I missed something... first she was going up to find the baby, and Twink just got kidnapped... and now she's giving some kind of signal? Have I missed a part of the show? This numbering system is confusing...
when i was a kid i used to think i was rainbow brite haha did kinda look like her (part japanese version) i was so convinced! my middle name is Iris (Goddess of Rainbow) hahaha funny SO MANY MEMORIES!!! :D
I agree. The modern day stuff, just doesn't work for me. I love the cartoons from when I was a kid. They were much more colorful and had some kind of meaning behind them.Lol.
As for the lady who gives orders, fans will tell you she's Lady Brite, queen of Wisp's world, but I wonder where they get all their fun facts from, because it's not evident here. Also, did you all know that (according to random fan outlines) this is taking place roughly in 1200 AD? Dang, is Rainbow Brite ever old...and ageless. What with the apparition and the mystical talking orb...does that make anyone else wonder if RB's an alien?
...I'm not saying this show isn't cute, but come on, people! The "pilot episode" seems more like a pastiche of archetypes straight out of "fantasy epics for dummies" rather than a logical explanation of the hierarchical order in rainbowland. Where exactly is Wisp from, what is her role in her society (they'd really send a kid on such a dangerous mission?), who is that woman? And just how did she wake up Starlite?
This show left a whole lot of unanswered questions. Starting with where did Wisp come from and who is that woman she's getting her orders from? What was that creature she fought and where did it come from? If she is the source of all color in the universe then does that mean she is taking over someone else's roll from before her? I guess I must be thinking too much about a cartoon!
Seriously though, did Hallmark really create her? I had heard that somewhere else before.
Well, think about it from a mythic hero stand point- she fought off the evil in her own land, and is told by a type of heavenly being 'sphere of light' to help others do the same. From a Judeo Christian stand point, she's like a disciple, going out into the world to create hope the way she was told to.
I'm totally with you, 2ndsuperman, on everything you pointed out. And you're definitely not overthinking it. Just because it's a cartoon doesn't mean they have to dumb it down for the kiddies. The plot in this episode had a lot of potential and they squandered it by rushing through it as though none of the big questions was important. If I had seen this as a kid I would have expected some serious explanations.
omg i've never seen the beginning before!! I have an essay due 2moro and I've just spent my time watching rainbow brite - it was worth the assignment fail, hehehe
They like rescue Patty O'Green twice, and never rescue Buddy Blue. You just have to pretend the second time they rescue Patty they rescued Buddy instead I guess. haha. That's always bothered me about this, but I guess it's far to late to fix, someone really should have paid attention to that.
But thanks for uploading this. I haven't seen it in years.
I noticed this too! I was so confused, because Patty O'Green was there twice, and then they were talking about finding the seventh Colour Kid, Shy Violet, yet Buddy Blue was never found.... So confused. XD;;
yeah i thought the baby looked like stormy too, but she also had the same voice as that bright light ball thingy that brought rainbow to the planet. aw the mysteries of early 80's cartoons.
Rainbow Brite kicks ass. That is all.

But would Rainbow be imperialistic or would it be the Lord of Darkness guy?
tennyomelime 3 years ago 2
Rainbow Brite I think is imperialism. The Lord of Darkness isn't actually "evil" or "dark", but this is how imperialism sees all civilizations that aren't like them.
Maybe...

I think it's just a show about rainbows, magic, and bravery :)
ShiningLunae 3 years ago 4
therealJMTaylor, as much as I liked Rainbow Brite, I think you nailed the symbolism of Western thinking on the head.
All their cartoons do show an "Us Against Them/ Light or Dark" mentality.
Cartoons like this helped indoctrinate kids into this mode of thinking (dark is evil, dark is bad), but it's very subtle.
Evil is not a color, it's a mentality and method of behavior.
