I don't think immortality would necessarily be a bad thing if you never aged or indeed could choose any age from your life, and if you could never suffer any diseases or infirmities.
I'd enjoy being immortal. I'd probably prefer it better than death, but its as you say - As long as it isn't forced. As a good Christian woman I used to talk about heaven with my friends as being a lot like an orgasium... I mean it has to be right? At least in hell they talk about how Demons and devils will use the most horrible tortures imaginable on you day after day. Which means you'll get some variety for the first couple hundred years.
Finally! Someone that understands! The thought of a heaven has for the longest time, made me shudder! Thanks so much for this video. I'm going to show my parents. It goes to a little of why I'm an atheist.
I saw DR vid of thanks and recoms. They have great taste so far. I've sub'ed. Can't wait to get to the rest of your stuff.
...of course the situation you describe is one where you don't like the situation. It makes me wonder why this guy is in heaven at all, given the sort of God used.
There seems to be a trend recently of saying that immortality in any form would be horrible torture. This always seems to me like it was pulled out of some existential nihilist's scrawled nightmare. If you like the situation, the worst that will happen is boredom, assuming no new things can be learned or made. Given normal human functioning, you'd expect to forget most of what you did after a short while and be able to go on repeating things indefinitely...
If heaven/hell were real, I believe hell would be where the cool kids go to hang out and just chill with friends. Living eternity easily, with a never ending joint and an open bar. Heaven would be a place for people to worship their daddy and stroke each others "ego" for eternity. It would work out for everyone that way. :)
in other worlds in heaven you do everything what is considered deadly sins on earth, except that you need to worship your to get in heaven and stay there
even if ama am atheist I see this as idiotic video. it is same as story about fox and grapes, I cant achieve immortality so i don't need it because that would be not good anyway.
if you thing death is so god then why not kill yourself now and do a favor for these who dont think so.
I agree that the idea of any eternal existence is scary and maybe awe inspiring.
Burning in a fiery pit of hell or existing forever in total bliss, they both creep me out. Even a 2 hour movie commitment makes me pause and think twice, but eternity ? Hold up.
Maybe the good ending/beginning is not a resting place of the soul but another commitment and task that will keep you occupied , the other option, watching reruns of the View without the aid of alcohol
Maybe that's the difference, in hell you would be conscious of the passage of time, in heaven you would be oblivious to it, outside of the ravages of it and it's effect on the psyche, timeless
time is measured by number of events, if nothing is happening around and nothing is happening inside you, then time is not going either. You cant be conscious about something that just does not exist.
add eventless to the idea of heaven then. nothing "happens" because the constrictions of time no longer hold sway over that dimension and reality.
that was my point though, hell would, on an intellectual level,be the keen awareness of time ,the passage of it , without any end in sight.
the idea that we will die is comforting to some people because of the time vacuum we are all existing in, transcending time is an concept that is possibly liberating or daunting
Excellent video - I'm glad I found you. Hell is such a stupid concept. If it existed as a real place it would be utterly pointless. It would not teach anyone a lesson, since it is endless, and there would be no rehabilitation. Just endless agony, at god's pleasure, and that makes god a sadist.
hell could be quite fun, it all depends what it is.
Assuming that it is place without god as moderate Christians believe it seem better that heaven where you must worship one big idiot for eternity.
if hell is some place with fire that does not destroy you it is just illusion, such thing cant be real because real fire is destructive, it is just same as some phobia or hyppnosis.
When I was a christian, I believe the majority of the focus was on avoiding hell. Little was ever said about heaven other than it is great. So are Frosted Flakes, Tony the Tiger says so. But I can't imagine eating those every morning for breakfast. :-)
That's one of the things that pushed me further down the path to atheism; the sudden realisation that my atheist friends - intelligent, reasonable people - would go to hell and i would spend eternity with the obnoxious ignorant christians who were debating against them. it was a scary thought.
the only way heaven "works" is if at the moment of death god reaches into your soul and ripps out all that makes you you. your hopes, dreams, fears, likes, dislikes, doubts, ambitions.. all gone. He replaces it with the "happiness" of heaven and a desire to worship hium forever...
Personaly this sounds less like paradise and a lote more like doing a celestial thorazine shuffle for all eternity.
He do not need to "replace" it with desire to worship him because that desire is primary criteria for you to enter heaven if you do not have such desire you go to hell.
@deltaxcd so... christians have no desires other than worship? funny.. i see them playing with thier kids.. trying to get ahead at work... having hopes, abitions, dreams... guess i was wrong.
@deltaxcd lol right, my desire for my children to be happy is a sin. you are mising the point. I am human, i wish to remain human. even if your god exists and there is no evidence he does, he is a monster
To avoid misunderstandings I am atheist ( ex-christian) so no need to talk in that way.
Christian faith is about becoming absolute slave to god, but you must desire that yourself. If you do not want to be slave you have no way, and probably no desire to enter gods kingdom. God is like some sadist who seeks masochist partners.
If you are not qualified for heaven you probably wont like it anyway.
@deltaxcd ahh i see now.(you did seem to using a bit to much reason for a christian)
You are right, at least that is the case for most christians in the US. But how about Calvanism? It is even worse. you dont choose got, god chooses you then over the course of your life he MAKES you believe my manipulated cercumstance to force you to rely on him.
I dot know much about Calvanism, but seems it is quite straightforward here.
Christian salvation does not depend on actions but depends on personality. Either you are born as obedient masochist either you are not, so that really depends on gods will.
if you have such desire you will fall into one or another religion anyway, if you are rebeliuos, most likely you will be atheist who controls those who want to believe.
@deltaxcd in calvanism it has nothing to do with you. They hold to the idea of election, in which god just picks some people. A commen example they use is the "dead in your sins" verse. They argue that a dead man cannot ask for help.
In any case... I'd rather go to Valahalla than heaven
Just believing in jesus to enter heaven would be too stupid, because even satanist may believe in Jesus and worship Satan. You must accept Jesus as your leader and obey him.
Anyway, jesus is special case, because he basically gives you some free will. Yahweh gave strict rules how to live, while Jesus allows to make rules yourself if if you have right intentions.
So whatever you do in the name of god is ok in Christianity.
GI, at what point does kissing up to your superiors becomes as bad as infinite suffering?
Image a white kid whining about being grounded and not let play his xbox for a week. Now image a 3rd world country where a child of the same age is struggling everyday just to survive. Can you honestly say that both examples are equal?
@x86freak I didn't stat that Heaven was hell because kissing up was as bad as suffering, and I don't think your analogy even demonstrates kissing up.
Heaven and hell would be the same because unless God entirely changed the way your brain functions (thereby making us different people) we would get used to the constant pleasure, OR the constant pain until we were simply numb an bored. An eternity of any one thing would be tortuously boring.
Yes, you're right, my example is the way I see complains about Heaven in this video. The author does not explore the idea of Hell, instead just tell us how unbearable christian's & god's company would be. And the mental torment of knowing loved ones are in Hell. You see, these concept H&H are of supernatural nature, yet analyzed only within materialistic worldview. It's worms talking about what flying is like.
@x86freak If you feel that they're supernatural concepts that are beyond out comprehension, why bother talking about them? Why do holy scriptures bother promising them to us as punishment/reward concepts, any why do they do so with reference to tangible, physical, natural things, like pain and pleasure, lakes of fire, and streets of gold? There's no point in introducing these concepts if we can't possibly grasp them. They're just overblown promises made by men who didn't thinkn them through.
FaithCheck , I was just wondering why I was subscribed to you . thanks for reminding me :) Now just imagine that your room mate in heaven is Kevin Hovind for the next 329 Octillion years (light would cross the known universe 5 million times)! No my freind existance would never tolerate an entity as cruel as god. May your death be far off and a peaceful one, sleep well my good man.
Faith to me is like a bandage, only you may not actually need it and if you do you have to make adjustments for it to work. It's also kind of like it's obvious that it's a bandage but no one ever initially knows that it's a bandage or that you have to adjust either yourself or the bandage for it to work. Ontop of that, not knowing what it actually is that you would use it for. The need is always expressed but not why you in particular might need it. Or maybe it is but doesn't apply.
I would take physical pain over mental agony any day. We are hard-wired to be empathetic to our loved ones. Given the choice to be waterboarded yourself or watch your loved ones being waterboarded, what would you choose?
"Also... a place of unimaginable bliss is as bad as place of unimaginable pain/suffering, really?"
@x86freak I would take physical pain over mental agony any day. We are hard-wired to be empathetic to our loved ones. Given the choice to be waterboarded yourself or watch your loved ones being waterboarded, what would you choose?
"Also... a place of unimaginable bliss is as bad as place of unimaginable pain/suffering, really?"
@TheFaithCheck any place which is eternal and constant becomes useless, the very fact that this world is soo full of many things is what makes life worth living for..
Don't forget, everyone looses there sex in heaven too. Galations 3:28 (no male or female in christ), Mark 12:25 (no one will marry or be given in marriage), Colossians 1:17-18_Ephesians 1:22-23 (All things are christ and The church is the body of christ).
Christian heaven steals your very identity. Also I think its interesting how very pantheist these verses sound, and yet a true pantheist system wouldn't require you to worship anything ever.
it is all about death ..isn't it!? it is such a harsh brutal end! we find it hart to accept it, it makes sense for others but not for yourself!
the moment you're dead, suddenly your thoughts your memories will be totally deleted for ever!!! suddenly you are not part of this universe...you are part of nothing really!
Imagine spending a lifetime worshiping a God in order to live longer with no success then die and spend an eternity worshiping the same God for his perfection, greatness and willingness to act on your prayers.
Imagine a God that 3 times has changed religion not counting the numerous
There's a familiar face at 2:03 of this video when you said "...your annoying pastor, all the megaspiritual...". Is that annoying pastor Kenneth Copeland of Dallas, Texas? I just would like to know whether it's a random pastor whom you chose. Thanks.
@TheFaithCheck Oh my, really? I'd love to watch that particular show if there's an uploaded version on youtube. My girlfriend and her family are there for the yearly convention right now. This is saddening.
@homeofbrokendreams But the skin around his eyes is so smooth and tight... I think maybe he has had (shock horror) PLASTIC SURGERY... His skin (and brain) show the effects of being out in the sun too long.
The idealists among the Christians think that they will forget their friends and relatives that have been condemned to hell. Why? Because the thought of your friends and relatives burning in hell, will be too much to bear. Give me a break, the burning of your relatives and friends in hell is too much to bear and I wouldn't want to be in a place where all my friends and relatives couldn't be.
As a transhumanist I do not agree with "death is a beautiful thing". Death is a design problem, and at least 50% of people want to live much longer than 100 years. In fact, some people do want to live as long as possible to experience life, because they love life, they love technological innovation, they love doing all the things that makes life great. Sure, a shorter life has more value than an infinite one, but there's no reason to dislike a longer life. But I agree on heaven, that would suck.
@dutchbb1979 I'm partially with ya. Human life expectancy has more than doubled since before the modern era and that's great. I would love to live a thousand years or more. But I'm glad to know it will end some day.
@dutchbb1979 me too, though I think having the possibility of choosing death still open is important.
Infinite life isn't so bad unless it's unchanging like the "heaven" idea imo. If I could live [a very long time] and see all the advances and discoveries of humanity, that'd be great.
Poor Christians. How mislead they have been. If there is a heaven it will be a place of perpetual responsibility. The perfect democracy in which everyone will HAVE to participate. Everyone will be responsible for the govenment and also for everyone else's well being, Just a little taste.
@humanist7117 It's not a perfect democracy when the leader doesn't care whether he has the people's consent. Yahwe is a tyrant, a psychopathic monarch, just like desert nomads would imagine him to be.
The dissonance between being happy in Heaven and knowing that some of your loved ones are burning in Hell is such a show stopper. It's funny to see Christians come up with solutions, such as, "You'll forget about your worldly life," or "You'll realize that your 'loved ones' were evil and belong in Hell." Hilarious.
@ozmoroid Aren't the Christian justifications unbelievable? You would think that they would snap out of it after having to make so many justifications. But sadly, no.
@TheFaithCheck one cannot be a moral human being and and be a christian d same time, christians pray everyday for the world to come to end and jesus to come back and murder 80% of humanity for d crime of being unbelievers and send them to burn in hell for eternity whilw they r snatche din to jesus' arms going to be in heaven forever, its sick and evil to believe this, poeple who believe dis r psycopaths
Well, I guess it depends on your intrepretation of Hell
watch?v=-q5vGcpx1sY
The reasons their arguments fail is because there is no comparison. If they asume that Hell is 1. Horrible, 2. Eternal, 3. Unavoidable (cept with Jebus), and 4. Just, everything falls apart.
@ozmoroid - One realization I had long ago regarding Heaven is that "forever and ever" is so long that our earthly life would be meaningless by comparison- less than a blink compared to the history of the universe, non-existent, really- and to think that our "eternity" is determined by something so insignificant was horrifying. Yeah, maybe you would forget you were ever "alive", but that makes eternal judgement even more cruel and insane.
@FishHeadSalad Re: 32y/o virgin. Funny right? I'm surprised we don't hear more about that. 30+ y/o virgins are total geeks. Why would everyone want to worship one?
Damn! I am so impressed with your editing!!! This was a vast improvement since your first couple videos. :) I also really enjoyed your topic. It reminds me of the South Park episode "Probably", where Satan visits heaven to ask relationship advice from God. Satan is greeted by a group of Mormons (apparently the chosen faith) that invite him to have punch and cookies, sing songs about how much it hurts to lie, and make crafts out of egg cartons. hahaha! An eternity of that?!? Hell no...
I don't know about anyone else but when I die I want to die, not live on as a spirit lol

Think of it this way. Maybe Hell is torture BECAUSE you live forever, and heaven is really eternal rest. (i.e. death)
Although I don't believe in either of them, but it's interesting to think about.

Try good-old waterboarding with a friend and maybe then you won't be saying that petty things like ass-kissing is torture.
Also... a place of unimaginable bliss is as bad as place of unimaginable pain/suffering, really?
x86freak 7 months ago
I would take physical pain over mental agony any day. We are hard-wired to be empathetic to our loved ones. Given the choice to be waterboarded yourself or watch your loved ones being waterboarded, what would you choose?
"Also... a place of unimaginable bliss is as bad as place of unimaginable pain/suffering, really?"
Since we are talking about eternity - yes.

@TheFaithCheck any place which is eternal and constant becomes useless, the very fact that this world is soo full of many things is what makes life worth living for..

Hey, I'd like to be immortal. I just wouldn't like to spend all that time worshiping some god's ass.

Imagine a God that 3 times has changed religion not counting the numerous
denominations of those 3 religions.

There's a familiar face at 2:03 of this video when you said "...your annoying pastor, all the megaspiritual...". Is that annoying pastor Kenneth Copeland of Dallas, Texas? I just would like to know whether it's a random pastor whom you chose. Thanks.
homeofbrokendreams 7 months ago
@homeofbrokendreams Yep, that's Kenneth Copeland. I saw him on TV telling people they would get money from god if they donated to his ministry.

But I agree on heaven, that would suck.
dutchbb1979 7 months ago
@dutchbb1979 I'm partially with ya. Human life expectancy has more than doubled since before the modern era and that's great. I would love to live a thousand years or more. But I'm glad to know it will end some day.
TheFaithCheck 7 months ago
@dutchbb1979 me too, though I think having the possibility of choosing death still open is important.
Infinite life isn't so bad unless it's unchanging like the "heaven" idea imo. If I could live [a very long time] and see all the advances and discoveries of humanity, that'd be great.

Poor Christians. How mislead they have been. If there is a heaven it will be a place of perpetual responsibility. The perfect democracy in which everyone will HAVE to participate. Everyone will be responsible for the govenment and also for everyone else's well being, Just a little taste.
humanist7117 7 months ago
@humanist7117 It's not a perfect democracy when the leader doesn't care whether he has the people's consent. Yahwe is a tyrant, a psychopathic monarch, just like desert nomads would imagine him to be.

The dissonance between being happy in Heaven and knowing that some of your loved ones are burning in Hell is such a show stopper. It's funny to see Christians come up with solutions, such as, "You'll forget about your worldly life," or "You'll realize that your 'loved ones' were evil and belong in Hell." Hilarious.
ozmoroid 7 months ago 15
@ozmoroid Aren't the Christian justifications unbelievable? You would think that they would snap out of it after having to make so many justifications. But sadly, no.
TheFaithCheck 7 months ago 2
@TheFaithCheck one cannot be a moral human being and and be a christian d same time, christians pray everyday for the world to come to end and jesus to come back and murder 80% of humanity for d crime of being unbelievers and send them to burn in hell for eternity whilw they r snatche din to jesus' arms going to be in heaven forever, its sick and evil to believe this, poeple who believe dis r psycopaths

I guess it depends on your intrepretation of Hell
Well, I guess it depends on your intrepretation of Hell
watch?v=-q5vGcpx1sY
The reasons their arguments fail is because there is no comparison. If they asume that Hell is 1. Horrible, 2. Eternal, 3. Unavoidable (cept with Jebus), and 4. Just, everything falls apart.
Mectrixctic 7 months ago
@ozmoroid - One realization I had long ago regarding Heaven is that "forever and ever" is so long that our earthly life would be meaningless by comparison- less than a blink compared to the history of the universe, non-existent, really- and to think that our "eternity" is determined by something so insignificant was horrifying. Yeah, maybe you would forget you were ever "alive", but that makes eternal judgement even more cruel and insane.

Hell no...
