I'd enjoy being immortal. I'd probably prefer it better than death, but its as you say - As long as it isn't forced. Reminds me of the show Angel Beats :D I don't particularly think death gives life meaning. I'd still have meaning by taking into consideration my dislike of suffering. Then again, I'm the one who figured if I were God, I'd give each person their own little "virtual reality" - Including killers, rapists, etc. So - Maybe I'm just the screwy one, Lol.

There seems to be a trend recently of saying that immortality in any form would be horrible torture. This always seems to me like it was pulled out of some existential nihilist's scrawled nightmare. If you like the situation, the worst that will happen is boredom, assuming no new things can be learned or made. Given normal human functioning, you'd expect to forget most of what you did after a short while and be able to go on repeating things indefinitely...

If heaven/hell were real, I believe hell would be where the cool kids go to hang out and just chill with friends. Living eternity easily, with a never ending joint and an open bar. Heaven would be a place for people to worship their daddy and stroke each others "ego" for eternity. It would work out for everyone that way. :)

I agree that the idea of any eternal existence is scary and maybe awe inspiring.

Burning in a fiery pit of hell or existing forever in total bliss, they both creep me out. Even a 2 hour movie commitment makes me pause and think twice, but eternity ? Hold up.

Maybe the good ending/beginning is not a resting place of the soul but another commitment and task that will keep you occupied , the other option, watching reruns of the View without the aid of alcohol

time is measured by number of events, if nothing is happening around and nothing is happening inside you, then time is not going either. You cant be conscious about something that just does not exist.

that was my point though, hell would, on an intellectual level,be the keen awareness of time ,the passage of it , without any end in sight.

the idea that we will die is comforting to some people because of the time vacuum we are all existing in, transcending time is an concept that is possibly liberating or daunting

When I was a christian, I believe the majority of the focus was on avoiding hell. Little was ever said about heaven other than it is great. So are Frosted Flakes, Tony the Tiger says so. But I can't imagine eating those every morning for breakfast. :-)

That's one of the things that pushed me further down the path to atheism; the sudden realisation that my atheist friends - intelligent, reasonable people - would go to hell and i would spend eternity with the obnoxious ignorant christians who were debating against them. it was a scary thought.

the only way heaven "works" is if at the moment of death god reaches into your soul and ripps out all that makes you you. your hopes, dreams, fears, likes, dislikes, doubts, ambitions.. all gone. He replaces it with the "happiness" of heaven and a desire to worship hium forever...

Personaly this sounds less like paradise and a lote more like doing a celestial thorazine shuffle for all eternity.

To avoid misunderstandings I am atheist ( ex-christian) so no need to talk in that way.

Christian faith is about becoming absolute slave to god, but you must desire that yourself. If you do not want to be slave you have no way, and probably no desire to enter gods kingdom. God is like some sadist who seeks masochist partners.

If you are not qualified for heaven you probably wont like it anyway.

Christian salvation does not depend on actions but depends on personality. Either you are born as obedient masochist either you are not, so that really depends on gods will.

if you have such desire you will fall into one or another religion anyway, if you are rebeliuos, most likely you will be atheist who controls those who want to believe.

@deltaxcd in calvanism it has nothing to do with you. They hold to the idea of election, in which god just picks some people. A commen example they use is the "dead in your sins" verse. They argue that a dead man cannot ask for help.

Anyway, jesus is special case, because he basically gives you some free will. Yahweh gave strict rules how to live, while Jesus allows to make  rules yourself if if you have right intentions.

Heaven and hell would be the same because unless God entirely changed the way your brain functions (thereby making us different people) we would get used to the constant pleasure, OR the constant pain until we were simply numb an bored. An eternity of any one thing would be tortuously boring.

The author does not explore the idea of Hell, instead just tell us how unbearable christian's & god's company would be. And the mental torment of knowing loved ones are in Hell. You see, these concept H&H are of supernatural nature, yet analyzed only within materialistic worldview. It's worms talking about what flying is like.

Faith to me is like a bandage, only you may not actually need it and if you do you have to make adjustments for it to work. It's also kind of like it's obvious that it's a bandage but no one ever initially knows that it's a bandage or that you have to adjust either yourself or the bandage for it to work. As a transhumanist I do not agree with "death is a beautiful thing". Death is a design problem, and at least 50% of people want to live much longer than 100 years. In fact, some people do want to live as long as possible to experience life, because they love life, they love technological innovation, they love doing all the things that makes life great. Sure, a shorter life has more value than an infinite one, but there's no reason to dislike a longer life. But I agree on heaven, that would suck.

The reasons their arguments fail is because there is no comparison. If they asume that Hell is 1. Horrible, 2. Eternal, 3. Unavoidable (cept with Jebus), and 4. Just, everything falls apart.

@ozmoroid - One realization I had long ago regarding Heaven is that "forever and ever" is so long that our earthly life would be meaningless by comparison- less than a blink compared to the history of the universe, non-existent, really- and to think that our "eternity" is determined by something so insignificant was horrifying. Yeah, maybe you would forget you were ever "alive", but that makes eternal judgement even more cruel and insane.
