When Skater of the Year started in 1990, the skaters got to decide who that was. They voted for it. When Kevin Thatcher resigned as editor, that changed under Jake Phelps, Cardiel's biggest fan, filled with that exuberant bias. Cardiel is obviously a good skateboarder, but he didn't add much to the sport that hadn't come before him. Pat Duffy exploded skateboarding's barriers then ... so he was robbed man.
