Thanks. You're actually pretty close on that guess. My lab partner and I built a 4 bit, then made another one and connected it, then got bored and added two more, and then my teacher encouraged us to grab 4 more from the class and that's how we ended up with 32 bits.
(The ones with all orange wires were the ones that my lab partner and I built.)
You can do the same with one PIC

Holy crap! That must have taken forever. I'm assuming your entire class had to create a 4-bit counter, and each of them were cascaded?
