  • Liking or performing different kinds of music doesn't make you phony. It means you don't have to pretend to be "authentic" by saying you like only one style. He wanted to play a variety of stuff; makes sense to me. Hell, even each individual song of his has like 5 or more versions when played live.

P.S. I happen to love his singing. I can only dream of ever having such great phrasing.

  • Was this in O Brother Where Art Thou?

  • Soggy Bottom Boys brought me here

  • Not Dylan's original song, he may have mixed up a few lyrics. He was a lover of music, this is a cover. Bob Dylan is amazing. Maybe not the best voice some of you say, but who better to tell the story than the storyteller.

  • I have to agree with the haters here.

Bob Dylan was a fantastic songwriter, but as an actual performer he seems pretty lousy. I can't think of a single Dylan song that I wouldn't rather hear performed by someone else.

Great songs, great legacy, terrible music.

That said, thanks for uploading this as I'm sure many people today did not even know he did this song way back in the 60's.

  • Bloog - Why is it phony? Every performer is wearing a mask. Dylan didn't write this song, and he might have spent some time copying Guthrie, Seeger, et al, but it's undeniable he wrote some NO many of the greatest songs of the latter half of the 20th century. Most songwriters would kill to write ONE song as good as I Shall Be Released, Like a rolling Stone, Knockin', Blowin' in the Wind, and that's just 30 secs of off the top of my head thinking. Good Lord man, just listen to Highway, or Blonde.
  • How dare you badmouth CREDENCE! Dylan holds his place in music as well as history, for he did write the song "The Times Are Changing!" How do you like them apples? Don't respond and try to dispute this comment , because you will merely show your ignorance!

  • @quaxk poser? hahaha , its called experimenting retard

  • Many artists started in one genre and switched to another as they found themselves musically or just experimented with other styles. I don't see how that makes them posers. It's no different than musics listeners enjoying many different genres. Some folks out there can't stand it if they are not making negative comments about something.

  • Bob Dylan should have stuck with writing, because he can't sing to save his ass.

  • @kwantoon

I love how you obviously don't know shit, it's funny. Happy new year! :)

  • @HeynesProductions Are you being serious? Or, are you trying to stir up an argument? Bob Dylan wrote some great songs, but the man is a horrible singer. It's not a matter of fact issue, it's my opinion.

So if you care to enlighten me, what exactly is it that I don't know? Could you please hand down some of your profound musical wisdom?

  • Dylan is just a brilliant musician. Look at all of the genres he covered. Folk, rock 'n roll, blues..it goes on and on. He also may have lived the most interesting life of anyone in history.

  • 2000th like

  • @rintudas12 Me too! Haha :P

  • Hater's gonna hate

  • I am a true Disciple of Dylan and his words is like my bible, his songs will live forever. In 50,000 years when future archaeologists stumble across a piece of Dylan coprolite they is gonna say " this is proof postive that gods once walked the earth"

  • There is a VERY good reason Dylan is a household name. If you dont "get it", maybe you should be looking at your own musical depth. I like Dylan, but I am not a huge fan, but I can sure appreciate genius when it slap me in the face.

  • how in the hell did he become a household name what a fffnnnn joke

  • @MegaLola48 You need to really listen and appreciate what you're hearing, if you are questioning his fame due to his voice, you need to keep listening to him, you'll soon realise your mistakes.

  • arguing over Dylan, hope he sees all this and laughs,Im 55 and he's older than me,so I'm sure many of you wernt here when he did this song, and btw Dylan is the one to put an amplified acoustic to the test, and introduced his brand of music,he did Man of Constant Sorrow before many of Union Station was even born,so ya'll just keep arguin!KMA

  • Buncha Scrubs arguing over a Dylan tune, stfu and listen

  • yeah, honestly Dylan doesn't give a shit about what you guys are arguing about. we all know he's a great muscian, fake or not.

  • screw you blooq967 what the hell yo even here he was no different than any other other artist today trying to make a buck . you horses ass to put an icon down of true talent heart an song writing your a p of sh ive seen bob three times growing up an everyone was down on him when he went from folk to his own thing so how was that poseur ? he didnt care man just wanted to do his own thing he is a true artist an no one will tell him what to do or where to play so i say this for bob man fu off......

  • I honestly don't think Dylan would give a shit any way so just enjoy the music

  • i love when people say Bob was a poseur/sellout/traitor. Maybe he would be if he gave two shits about what people thought of him, but he didn't. He did whatever the hell he wanted, and I respect him for that.

  • Dylan was the real OG, none of this soggy bottom bullshit lol

  • Dylan immersed himself in the folk tradition, Guthrie etc. Then he was able to create an original song that had the authentic feel of a truly old song, and gave the lyrics modern depth and poetic feel and sensibilities of the beat generation.

  • He's a good musician, only?? what to say about his amazing lyrics? His devotion for music goes beyond all fruitless arguments.

  • @TheCreeso what a poet. rofl. FAIL.

  • I love it when people call a specific singer or musician bad. Why come here then? I mean, if you know you don't like Bob Dylan, why would you look him up, click on the video, and listen to all of it?

  • what was he, 19?? That is talent. It's not like Bieber who became famous for no talent. This guy could play harmonica, guitar, piano, sing (not amazing but still sings), and best of all, writes the best poetry/songs that i've ever seen.

  • @dablueman21 yeah he cant american idol sing, but that voice

  • the kid's got talent ... he just might make a mark for himself

  • @tyucikas I don't see it.

  • kinda sux. dylan was highly overrated. yuck.

  • @LeadRat Well, you have the right to have an opinion, but yours is wrong as hell. You just have to listen his songs (poems) in peace to fully reach them.

  • um. cough. Woody Guthrie.

  • very good cheers

  • Hell Ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why the hell does the Soggy Bottom Boys cover of this have more views then this?!

  • @mynameisamitch Because it's better

  • @insheperdswetrust no i think the only song he wrote on his first album was "song to woody".

  • @edwardLRS And Talkin' New York!

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing fucking performance!!! This is real fucking talent not what you hear today

  • dylan was ahead of his time and saw things that people imagined but couldn't put into words. He himself said, He didn't know the man who wrote his songs. He was tapped into genius.

  • @stevevandien I'm not sure how you can say Dylan wasn't a great songwriter, after he wrote some of the most memorable and moving songs of the 20th century, the defining songs of a generation, which have been covered by the greatest artists of the past and present. And musicianship has rarely been the mark of a great artist. You seem to be viewing Dylan from the standpoint of a technician, which is silly, like complaining that Van Gogh couldn't paint photorealistically. You aren't hearing Dylan.

  • @grapefruitgrove so well said grapefruitgrove, I've always been looking for the answer you provided there, brilliant!

  • epic.

  • epic.

  • I've thought about this for some 35 years.

Dylan was in the right place at the right time. He certainly was not a great songwriter, much less a great musician (Phil Ochs was much more talented). He had enough talent to inspire enough people (mostly young and marginally educated) who went bananas over him. But good grief. So many genuflect at Dylan's altar without bothering to think about the quality of his work or lack thereof. They are simply stunned into silence by his reputation.

  • @stevevandien Many people look at Dylan as a defining figure of Folk music of the time, other's look at him as a poet and ingenious songwriter, and other's look at him as a complete and utter nutcase. He quit performing and turned reclusive after a motorcycle incident. I think it's because all of the people that went insane over Dylan eventually posted him as a "leader" during the civil rights movements and anti war movements and he didn't know how to handle that. Imagine if Dylan had kept going

  • @DirtyJacket1 He didn't perform and could barely be contacted for several years after his accident, and he admitted that, after he had gotten married and had children, that he just wanted a quiet life away from the loud lifestyle that came with his fame.

  • @stevevandien

I always think he is a good musician and a good lyricist but i don't know that much about writing music or about notes and tuning instruments. I think that what a lot of people don't consider is that he was a lot more clever than the people around him and a lot of his stuff is just a guy who realizes he is smarter than most and he is just having fun, his lyrics and his interviews demonstrate this

  • @stevevandien

    'mostly young and marginally educated'

uhm, it was entirely the opposite. As a Beatles biographer put it: "Dylan's core audience were college kids with artistic or intellectual leanings, a dawning political and social idealism, and a mildly bohemian style."

And I like Ochs, but it's nonsense to say that he was more talented than Bob. Ochs himself would've denied that. The reason people like Bob Dylan is because he made some of the greatest music of the 20th century.

  • @Rossonero072213

Uhm, it doesn't follow that "college kids with artistic or intellectual leanings," etc. are more than marginally educated. Unless you believe such kids have COMPLETED their educations.

I can argue the point further. Instead, how about I disagree with your opinion while respecting it, and you do the same for mine without calling it "nonsense?"r

    Best, Steve

  • My ears are in constant sorrow listening to Dylans voice. Great writer...horrible singer IMHO

  • @MusiciansForums i disagree

  • love this song :}...sorry double post ;} hehe

  • been a few weeks...nice to have you back bob :} hehe.

  • battlefield 3 has the most obnoxious ads...

  • He plays guitar as high as Paul Rudd slapps 'a' da bass.

  • It's adapted from an irish folk song, first recorded in 1913 in the US by a blind bluegrass singer, Dick Burnett, and the version that became the standard was the Stanley Brothers in the 50s from which Dylan, Baez, Collins and other folk singers covered.

  • WOW, still makes me tingle to hear a real artist, a visionary, a poet do his stuff.

  • The great Poet can sing and tell a story.

  • Awesome song ;)

  • that ain't dylan, it's donovan.

  • @wsmith6079wpg are you insane ??

  • @lotrpainter

sane is sane but if i were to ask you "are you out of sane?" or "are you IN sane?" don't know about you but my answer is gonna be "I am IN sane dammit" i was just joking about that

  • I don't think I'm the only one with a Dylan fan for a dad

  • Great song writer, but he can't sing for shit.

  • I maybe fifhteen but i know for damn sure this is what true music is!♥bob dylan

  • @blooq967 Well you type like you're six...

  • @creekerwalker92

What the fuck is your problem? It's ass holes like you that people hate on youtube. Can't someone make a nice comment on videos for once jesus fucking christ.

  • @blooq967 you mad?

  • @creekerwalker92

hah just a little pissed i guess haha just never in the mood to deal with assholes:)

  • @blooq967 Not if you like taylor swift and justin bellend

  • @blooq967

    concern troll much?

  • @blooq967 true? I don't think so, sure it's music, but dylan was a big poseur during his folksy phase, this is as phony as it gets, proof is how fast he changed styles after that, he's a good musician, but he's as true as creedence clearwater members were from the bayou

  • @quaxk I need to humbly disagree with you there. He may have changed his style frequently and to the disdain of his fans, but that's the mark of a TRUE musician who is, to contradict your statement, in it for the MUSIC and not the notoriety. He just created from his heart. He also was a huge fan of Guthrie, who I don't think anyone can call a poser in the folk genre. Dylan not only was a TRUE musician, but a social critic, caustic poet, and Civil Rights activist. He was and is a TRUE LEGEND!

  • @quaxk may be u did not know what bob dylan was... He is not someone who wagged along with some manager's tail like today's musicians do.. he made music for himself.. he sang for himself... thats why he broke all the boundries of music in his time.. just because he did not care what people wanted to hear.. or the record company wanted to hear.. he just created different music like real musician would do ...

  • @dabishan - As you rightfully suggest styles typically evolve and it is his artistic flexibility that enabled this evolution. If anything it shows what a great artist he always was. Further, Dylan had a great influence on many folk stars both in the UK & US in that era. There are many things to be merited about the great influence he exerted on so many. This is why he remains so beloved to this day.

  • @quaxk if you're worried because the facts and accounts of the songs people sing aren't 'true', you're missing the point. dylan sings about the human condition, and in this period was following the folk tradition and putting his own spin on it. he could be singing from an autobiographical standpoint or from the standpoint of a fictional character, it's the feeling and the sentiment and the artistic 'truth' that matters, not factual truth or whatever bollocks you were referring to...

  • @quaxk How exactly does this make him a poser......... that's a pretty stupid statement, and it's pretty lame anybody gave it a thumbs up........ It is folk music...... music of the people. He also at least took some time to study the records and learn from others and NYC and meet Woody Guthrie... Does he have to come from Appalachia to sing the song or something.

  • @quaxk So, is Page a big poseur for not sticking with skiffle?

  • @quaxk Hey shut the fuck up. If you don't like his music why bother even looking him up. Quit Hating.

  • @quaxk Dude why the fuck are you saying that, Why would you insist on talking shit about him? If you don't like him don't fucking comment...

  • @quaxk just watch 'I'm Not There'

  • @quaxk

Did you see him "posing" onstage at Gerde's?

Did you see him "posing" on MacDougal Street?

Did you see him "posing" at the Newport Folk Festival?

Why do I bet you weren't? Why do I bet you are an overweening, revisionist hater, so typical?

Were you even born during his "folksy" phase?

  • If Bob was not posing, he was sure calculating. He ALWAYS wanted to be a Rock Star. When his first attempts failed - he picked up on the folk trend to achieve a specific goal - stardom. It's a stone cold fact that he wrote some amazing songs along the way. His talent and his knack cannot be denied. His songs will endure and many deserve to. Through it all - the social commentary, the revolution rants, it was only a means to an end, and ended the moment he heard the Beatles, and plugged in.

  • @ChynaRider No Dylan really loved folk music. Watch some more recent interviews and he talks about it.

  • @quaxk man you obviously don't know anything about beat-literature or music.

  • @blooq967 look up two gallants. They're wonderful

  • @blooq967 no one cares that you're 15. congratulations for having a pair of working ears.

  • @blooq967 do you know for damn sure how to spell?

  • soggy bottom boys do it better :P

  • @TheRiddlebox69 you moron!

  • @TheRiddlebox69 moron

  • @TheRiddlebox69 agreed. thats also where i heard it first. Go oh brother where art though movie

  • is this from his first album or second album?

  • @MrPuppetFetish his first one :)

  • There's a singer in Canada named, Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash, who reminds me of Bob.

  • I personally like his voice, then again, I am in the minority. I'd rather hear Dylan sing than these teeny boppers who have to rely on autotune to make their voice sound good.

  • @raphater2000

I don't think you're in the minority. Bob Dylan was a superb singer, maybe his voice wasn't always pretty, but he had a great subtlety with words. And his phrasing was inimitable.

But even people who don't liker his voice, can't really deny that he's one of the most influential singers of the 20th century.

  • don't know much about music or singin but like the sound of this song. One thing is certain, there is no accounting for some people's taste, just ask hannibal lecter.

  • NO! I am not looking for a Sitter or Nanny god damnit.

  • wow .... I need to drain my ears now.. (not a fan of Dylan ... though this wan't bad, it was before he really over used his cadence)

  • That's an "old" voice coming out of a very young body.

  • I love it! Thanks for sharing...

  • He looks like TED MOSBY!

  • This is great! A true legend, and still alive and well today.

  • WOW this is Awesome!! I loved growing up in the 70's Dylan is Awesome thanks for uploading

  • The man can't carry a tune in bucket.

BUT, he is a master tunesmith and I can't imagine him singing anyother way. His voice and delivery are perfect for what he does and I wouldn't change a thing if I could. I've been listening to him for 50 years now and I don't intend to stop.

By the By, I can't carry a tune in a bucket either.

  • @mightaswellbe I don't know why, I prefer this song on it's country blues edition played by banjo...I have heard it by some country singer I don't remember...but here is a video for an alternative that I like: Alan Dalton Trio - The Man Of Constant Sorrow

  • I know i'm gonna get smashed by the purists here - personally, I LOVE Bob Dylan - but, this song has a descending bass line, no harmonica and a chorus. Yes, he's the folksy voice of the 60's - but this sounds crap. The tempo is meant to be upbeat (just watch "oh brother where art thou?)

  • he blows well

  • Really? You noticed hes not Pavarotti? The total package in folk music was Bob Dylan. Flawless.

  • He can sure write the lyrics!!

  • er beinah jodelt... great Dylan.

  • thats what drugs will do for you referring to hendrix

  • Comment removed

  • I like Bob...... its about how much feeling is in the song

  • Bob Dylan would not have made it in today's crappy music scene, thank god he was born when he was

  • @inst1g8t0r I don't know. There still are pockets of quality music out there, though they do seem harder to find. Check out Fleet Foxes, for instance. Very reminiscent of the 60's folk scene.

  • @inst1g8t0r Oh, and Gillian Welch. Can't forget Gillian Welch!

  • @inst1g8t0r That's because people had artistic integrity back then. They were willing to wait to become famous instead of prostituting their talent.

  • @inst1g8t0r

I think he would. What is enjoyed at one time will always be enjoyed by others in another time. If you look deep enough you'll find plenty musicians like Dylan that are new. Obviously not as legendary, but they are definitely out there

  • Singer this and singer that.. It's his lyrics and performance that makes him! Try to duplicate that on american idol!

  • Search Tom Waits, The piano has been drinking. If you like Dylan, youll dig Waits even more.

  • Comment removed

  • @Motown49001 Fuck You

  • god?well at least an angle if there was such a thing

  • playing the harmonica, guitar, and singing at the same time? That's talent right there. That's tough, i like to see you haters try.

  • Wtf? You people have nothing better to do than sit around and talk trash about a legend?....I guess it takes a certain level of intelligence to understand Dylan...obviously lacking her.

  • Bob dylan is a fucking loudmouth cunt. I hate his redneck singing style and all of his songs. And i fucking hate that all the radio stations i listen dignify to play his songs.

  • @DoomDodgers then why are you listening to a video of him playing live? gtfo.

  • @butteryassbutter Oh a nazi. I'm sorry nazi that i voiced my opinion in public, nazi. Why dont you take your nazi face out off here and go to nazitube instead you nazi. And why i came to this video with my incediary comment is because the link here polluted another video i was watching, and it ruined that perfectly good song, and day for me.

  • @DoomDodgers you obviously know nothing about music, go kill yourself you pathetic excuse for a human....

  • @DoomDodgers I can't even believe what I just read. Either extreme ignorance, or just trying to get a reaction from people. If the latter, I guess it worked as it got me to reply.

  • @DoomDodgers Hahahahahaha snarky faggot, why would you even commment on here if you hate Bob Dylan, fucking faggot keep your snarky comments to yourself and listen to music you actually like.

  • @DoomDodgers You hate all his songs? I'm sure you have not even heard a small fraction of this legends musical library. This man is a musical and cultural icon! YOU HAVE PROVED WITH YOUR CHILDISH COMMENT THAT YOU YOURSELF ARE A LOUDMOUTH CUNT.Have a nice day fool.

  • wow I love ya bob!!! only if I could've lived back then this is real music

  • TrollNationUnited - if this is the alternative to autotune, I'd rather have the autotune - fuckin Dylan blows

  • @Motown49001 Hahahahahahahahaha that was so insulting, faggot, come back with a better insult.

  • @TrollNationUnited i doubt u found that hillarious pussy

  • @Motown49001 I remember when I was a faggot like you, you are right I'm a pussy because unlike you I actually like women.

  • @TrollNationUnited you were a faggot, you are a faggot, and you always will be a faggot

  • @Motown49001 Please, stop talking about yourself just because you are insecure about your sexuality doesn't mean you can call me a fag, that is offensive to most people including yourself.

  • I dont give a damn if people think Bob Dylan can not sing, I am many of those people who think he can sing, because for one this how natural someone voice is suppose to sound when the sing have you listen to the blues all there voices sound natural when they sing, not autotune or some computer generated voice changer, this is just pure talent.

  • @TrollNationUnited

Bobby is surely channeling Woody on this night. Great job. Check Woody's photos with the Almanac Singers--same raised gaze and tilted head...not to mention vocal. Dylan was/is/will be the Greatest.

  • @TrollNationUnited he's an excellent singer.

  • @TrollNationUnited That and he's the best songwriter who ever lived. He and Kris Kristofferson and Dolly Parton are all lyrical geniuses. :)

  • @TrollNationUnited I agree autotune sucks, and I agree with everything you pretty much say, except I still hate his voice. However, I dig on this song.

  • @TrollNationUnited Although I love Bob Dylan.. What you said is pretty stupid. Think Frank Sinatra! Beautiful voice and it was pure talent.

  • Soggy Bottom Boys do it just a tad bit better. Personally speaking. Plus, Kentucky is way better than Colorado.

  • @JKellox69lol psych bitch. fuck kentucky.

  • @JKellox69lol

    never been to colorado obviously.

  • he could've/should've... you're right

  • it doesn't get bigger than dylan.. he played woodstock, on the steps by martin luther king.. walking history

  • @ominouswords bob dylan didnt play at woodstock
