I still advise everyone to not spoil themselves if they haven't seen the entire movie. The ending is best after the prior hour and thirty minutes of suspense.

I think MBV is one of the VERY few times where the killer ends up being more sympathetic than the victims.

Until the last 15 minutes, we never really find out how psychologically damaged Tom really is from the massacre/Axel taking Sarah away from the murder site and leaving him to Harry's mercy and then to come back to a town where people hold him responsible for all the chaos instead of the actual killer... a person could write a very well-rounded psychology paper on Tom Hanniger.
