These traps are non-selective, and in most cases, cruel.
Death isnt always instant and it doesnt take long for an animal to start attempting to gnaw off the trapped limb and die of infection or blood-loss.
Conibears are only a potential instant kill. They require the animal to be the right size and should be travelling at the right speed and the right angle.
If one must hunt, use a friggin gun to the head - at least that takes a bit of skill.
Trapping takes a great bit of skill and a great bit of effort.
Conibears are usually pretty lethal, and in the case of a beaver set, they get either beavers or animals running beaver paths (occasionally muskrat, nutria or predators).
and by pretty lethal, i mean i never had one fail to insta kill when set properly in 12 years of trapping. The only time it has been an issue is when the trap is iced up or sticks/grass gets in the way. They are about as humane as you can get.
Absolutely false. Conibears are quite humane, I've never had any problems with them. I don't know where you get the gnaw off a limb part but if an animal has set one of these off, it's not going to be alive to gnaw off limbs. And the old stories about animals caught in foothold traps gnawing off limbs is largely B.S. from radical animal rights groups. Trapping has come a long ways since the 1800's. Google trapping BMP's if you think trapping is cruel/non-selective, etc. Scientists say otherwise
You are arrogant insensitive! My dog was running around on MY property! A rusty old trap had been sitting there for god knows how long and my dog ran into it.
These traps ARE indiscriminate and everything from bald eagles to children have gotten caught in them.
The traps are pre-rusted prior to use. rust is not an indicator of age.
These traps are generally set in water or in a few other specific locations around water. The traps are required by law (US LAW) to have a small metal tag with the address of the owner stamped on it.
Generally speaking they are set in Beaver Habitat areas.
it is illegal to run a dog through a beaver dam area.
So it sounds like you had a trespasser.
and
you were illegally running your dog in a beaver habitat.
Regardless of what he/she was doing, the fact is, someone else's trap killed this person's beloved pet. If this happened to one of my dogs, I'd be pretty upset too, as I'm sure you would be.
You're lying. If your dog had been caught in a trap like the one in the video. The trap would have quickly killed him. If the dog was caught in a foothold trap it is very unlikely that he would have been seriously injured. Over the years three of my dogs have been caught in foothold traps and none of them suffered any injury. Killer traps like the one shown here are not allowed to be set on the ground. They are either set underwater for beaver or muskrat or in trees for fisher and marten.
there is also a very effective method using a loop of rope around the inside ends of the spring. It uses the strength of your leg and leaves a hand free to set the hook on the spring.
i think i perfer the #160 conibear, i'm not trapping beaver

Conibears are typically used in water sets. In fact, in my state, they can only be legally used to take beaver and muskrat.
